The Pastor’s RANT…
A new Addition to
St. Joseph Cathedral
Welcome Pat Robell
New Music Director
We are excited and blessed to welcome Pat Robell to
our parish staff as Parish Music Director. He comes
to us from Cathedral Catholic High School and past
music ministry at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. You
might have gotten a taste of his talents as he directed
the music this past year here at our Holy Thursday
and Easter Vigil liturgies with Bishop McElroy. It
was MAGNIFICENT! He will help us to build upon
the wonderful music ministry here at St. Joseph Cathedral and our goals are lofty as we move forward.
We want a Cathedral Choir that will bring glory to
God and a children’s choir that will help our young
ones to come to love the liturgy through sacred music. Pat will begin on July 15th and we are excited
about what the future holds. Please join me in a
hearty welcome to our newest parish staff member.
Welcome Pat!
A new Priest in Residence
Welcome Fr. Pedro Rivera
here at St. Joseph Cathedral
On July 15th, we will welcome Fr. Pedro Rivera who
will begin living in residence here at St. Joseph Cathedral. Fr. Pedro has served as diocesan Vocations
Director for the past several years. He begins a new
ministry as he will direct the Newman Center at San
Diego State University. Fr. Pedro will also help us
here with masses and liturgies. We are very blessed
to have him with us! When you see him, introduce
yourself and welcome him with the Spirit of St. Joseph! Welcome Fr. Pedro!
Missionary Appeal 2016
Bishop Kumordji from Ghana, Africa spoke at all
masses last weekend (June 25-26) regarding the
wonderful ministry being exercised in his diocese
and asked for our prayerful and material support of
the people he serves. Envelopes to support this
effort were distributed at all masses. Please return
your envelope in the regular collection or to the parish office as is convenient to you. Thank you for
your sacrifices in support of the missionary efforts
of the Church.
FYI…Happy Independence Day!
The parish office will be closed on Monday July 4th
in observance of Independence Day. The office will
reopen on Tuesday at 9:00am
FYI…Monday Mass Schedule
In observance of the Independence Day holiday, we
will have ONE MASS ONLY AT 9:00am on Monday
July 4th. There will be no 7:00am or 12:07 pm daily
masses that day. Our regular schedule will resume

A Helping Hand…or Seat
Our Mobility Chair is Up and
Running!
For many of our seniors and others, the front steps
of the Cathedral can be rather daunting. Well, our
mobility chair is up and running. It is located on the
north side of the steps under the overhang. This
safe and easy-to-use chair makes it better to go up
or down the steps with little effort. Please ask an
usher if you need help in operating it. This project is
our way of responding to the real needs of the seniors who attend St. Joseph Cathedral! You are so
important to us!
Have a blessed and holy week! In Christ’s love, Fr.
Pat

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Decimocuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
El pasado domingo, Jesús reprendió
a Santiago y Juan por
querer hacer “bajar
fuego del cielo” (Lucas
9:54–55) a un pueblo
que no los recibió. Hoy,
al enviar discípulos,
Jesús también les prohíbe represalias contra
quienes no los escuchan
(10:10–11),
hoy, nuestro consuelo, nuestra madre atenta y amorosa (Isaías 66:13).
(Lucas 10:1-12, 17-20) [1-9].

Faith Formation
Faith Formation is a vital element of every Catholic
parish. The role of parish faith formation is to provide
organized and systematic approach to the instruction
and practice of the faith for everyone in the parish
community. The goal of this formation is to give each
member an understanding of their faith so they can
evangelize and witness to the faith in the greater secular community. The programs offered at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral parish reflect the diversity of an urban Southern California parish.
In addition to the weekly catechetical program special
events and speakers are presented throughout the
parish’s pastoral year.
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)
RCIA an Invitation for everyone
to Community in Christ.
At St. Joseph Cathedral’s parish community we believe that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA
process. The RCIA’s invitation is for those individuals who have not been baptized and wish to enter into
a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic
Faith Community. The invitation is for those from
other Christian Faith communities who wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church.
Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist will find the invitation is
for them to complete those sacraments. Catholics
who have not been active in their faith and wish to
return to an active sacramental relationship with the
faith community will find the RCIA a place to have
that journey. Also, Catholics who wish to renew their
faith by refreshing their knowledge of the church’s
teaching are most welcome.
Evangelization and Catechesis are the hallmarks of the
RCIA at St. Joseph Cathedral. For more information
write Bill Bischoff at [email protected] or call
the Parish Office.

or [email protected]. Parents are encouraged to
