TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS AND THE
SANCTUARY RENEWAL
I cannot think of a better way to begin
construction of the sanctuary renewal than with
the feast of the Triumph of the Cross. I was quite moved last
week when I realized that God had planned the beginning of our
construction to coincide with this great feast! As we move the
statue of the risen Lord to the entrance, where it’s open arms will
appropriately welcome folks into the church building, we will
place the crucifix in the sanctuary beneath a great arch. The arch
is a classic symbol of triumph in roman architecture, and placing
the crucifix under it reminds us of the triumphant power of the
cross over sin and death. The crucifix is the greatest sign of
God’s love for us and it’s placement in the center of our church
and worship will allow us to always unite our sufferings with
Christ’s, and experience the healing power of His resurrection!

This day is also called the Exaltation of the Cross, Elevation of the
Cross, Holy Cross Day, Holy Rood Day, or Roodmas. The liturgy
of the Cross is a triumphant liturgy. When Moses lifted up the
bronze serpent over the people, it was a foreshadowing of the
salvation through Jesus when He was lifted up on the Cross. Our
Mother Church sings of the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of
our redemption. To follow Christ we must take up His cross,
follow Him and become obedient until death, even if it means
death on the cross. We identify with Christ on the Cross and
become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.
We made the Sign of the Cross before prayer which helps to fix
our minds and hearts to God. After prayer we make the Sign of the
Cross to keep close to God. During trials and temptations our
strength and protection is the Sign of the Cross. At Baptism we are
sealed with the Sign of the Cross, signifying the fullness of
redemption and that we belong to Christ. Let us look to the cross
frequently, and realize that when we make the Sign of the Cross
we give our entire self to God — mind, soul, heart, body, will,
thoughts.
O cross, you are the glorious sign of victory.
Through your power may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.

2ND COLLECTION
SEPT. 20-21
FY July 2014 - June 2015
Msgr. Simon was recalled from the Atlanta
Archdiocese to become the Vicar General in the newly
formed Diocese of Wiawso in his native country of
Ghana. Wiawso is among the poorest areas of Ghana.
Msgr. Simon has worked tirelessly for the people of this
area.
In his efforts to provide clean drinking water and
better shelters, clothing and education, he has become
somewhat of a pop star to his people, crossing all
religious and ethnic barriers. Today, fifteen villages
enjoy clean drinking water due to his efforts of sinking
wells.
Visitors to Ghana are truly amazed at what Msgr.
Simon has accomplished with the support he has received
from the different parishes here in Atlanta, but the journey
is not over. Please be generous in our 2nd collection to
support the work of Msgr. Simon.

As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate
them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and
return them with increase to the Lord.
Today’s second reading from St. Paul’s letter to the
Philippians emphasizes humility as a one of Jesus’ core virtues
(Phil 2:6-8). Humility is also a key virtue for us if we are to
fulfill our role of being stewards of Providence. Recognizing
all we have comes from God helps us maintain a healthy
perspective on the things we own, and assists in avoiding
getting caught up in a materialistic lifestyle.

Sept. 21- BLUEPRINT This Life
Night starts off our semester,
“Church,” and provides an
overview of the origin of the
Church and why it is necessary to
our faith in Christ. A competition
between small groups begins the
Life Night. This activity transitions
into the teaching and is used to
demonstrate how our human efforts
to reach God fall short, but God’s
plan provides us with a model
house that is the Church, founded by Christ. The
goal of this Life Night is to help teenagers
understand Christ as the foundation of the Church.
It will challenge them to make Christ the
foundation of their own lives.

Children. Parents are welcome to see

Sept. 17- WELL OF LIFE This Edge Night’s
theme is from the story of the women at the well
found in the Gospel of John. The night will begin
with fun game demonstrating the broken cisterns
that we bring to God to fill. The teaching is focused
on how prayer is a gift, is from the heart, and is
meant to be used to develop a relationship with the
living God. Grade group discussion will focus on
the students relationship with God, and then
everyone will gather back together to do a
meditation on the Our Father. The meditation will
lead right into the closing prayer, which focuses on
coming humbly to God and asking Him for His
divine assistance.
