ue El Bulevar de los Boricuas este
domingo, ya que cientos de miles
se reunieron a lo largo de la Quinta
avenida para el 58° Desfile anual del
Día de Puerto Rico el 14 de junio.
En el timón como Gran Mariscal estaba
la ganadora del premio de la Academia, el
Emmy, el Grammy y el Tony, Rita Moreno. Se
unió a Lin-Manuel Miranda, creador de In the
Heights y Hamilton, quien fue galardonado
con el Premio “Nuestro Orgullo” del desfile. El
gobernador de Puerto Rico, Alejandro García
Padilla, estuvo presente, al igual que el alcalde
Bill de Blasio, la presidenta del Concejo
Municipal Melissa Mark-Viverito y el presidente

de Crisis de Salud de Puerto (PRHCC por
sus siglas en inglés), más de 50 mil firmas
se han recolectado en una petición en
línea y campaña de redes sociales -bajo la
etiqueta #unidosporlasalud- protestando por
los recortes. Algunas personas sostuvieron
carteles en apoyo a lo largo de la ruta del
desfile.
Marchando en la celebración anual de
la herencia también estuvieron miembros
de la Red Acacia, la segunda más grande
organización comunitaria en el país, fundada y

Perhaps a little of both, but definitely all
District Nine.
Students of 11 schools from the Department
of Education’s District 9 in the Bronx
participated in a visual arts festival this past
Sat., June 13th.
The festival featured artwork from
elementary and middle school students from
the neighborhoods of Grand Concourse,
Morrisania, and Tremont, on the western edge
of the South Bronx.
“‎ It is a way to foster collaboration
in our community,” explained District
Superintendent Leticia Rodríguez-Rosario,
adding that the festival was one of about 15
events planned throughout the school year to
strengthen community ties.
The schools’ parent coordinators organized
the showcase, which also included a dance
show and delectable treats from a candy bar.
“We want to educate our children and
our parents,” said Millicent Matos, Parent
Coordinator of P.S. 443, The Family School.
Students had worked throughout the year
on various multimedia projects, and the yearend showcase highlighted their best work.
“It is the first time we have this display in a
long time,” said Ebony Davidson.
She has been an art teacher at CJHS 145
since 1995. Her students, in grades 6 through
8, used a variety of media, including oil

give life to their creations. They had also
applied unique techniques.
One of the projects, for example, consisted
of selecting a segment of a candy wrapper of
choice and enlarging it using the grid method.
The latter is a time-intensive process, and
involves drawing a grid over the reference
photo or image, and then drawing a grid of
equal ratio on a new work surface. Davidson’s
student artists chose paper. As the artist draws
the image on the canvas, she focuses on one
square at a time, until the entire image has
been transferred. Once finished, the grid lines
are erased or painted over, and the new image
will be presented in new proportion, ready to
be finished.
Davidson stood before the “Eye Candy”
exhibit, which presented the finished products
– bright white sheets of paper illustrated with
oversize images of popular sweets such as
Jolly Ranchers and Skittles.
She said it was sharing her knowledge with
students that thrilled her the most.
“I love working with the children. Anytime
I can spend time with them working on pieces
I find rewarding,” said Davidson. “Someone
taught me [once], and I like to teach them.”
Nearby, her colleague Jennifer Spies
proudly displayed her students’ masterpieces.
An art teacher at M.S.145, Spies worked with
her students on impressionism techniques,
including pointillism.

Bronx native Judy Torres has scored club hits with songs such

ontefiore’s School Health
Program has received a
$3 million grant for a new teen
pregnancy prevention initiative in
the Bronx, which has one of the
highest rates of teen pregnancy in
the nation.
The pledge comes from the Jerome L.
Greene Foundation, which focuses on the
causes of education, the arts, health, and
social justice.
“Montefiore’s School Health Program is
a model for the nation, serving communities
with unacceptably high rates of poverty
and chronic disease, as well as an underresourced educational system,” said Steven
M. Safyer, M.D., President and CEO of
Montefiore Health System. “[This] will
strengthen our efforts to reach out to
disadvantaged teens and prevent unintended
pregnancies. We are proud to further
our partnership with the Foundation to
improve health outcomes in our community,
especially for our kids.”
The Montefiore School Health Program
(MSHP) is the largest school health program
in the country, providing comprehensive
medical, dental, mental and community
health services to 40,000 elementary, middle
and high school students at 23 campuses in
the Bronx.
The new teen pregnancy prevention
initiative will build on MSHP’s existing
model, which has achieved an almost 50%
reduction in positive pregnancy test rates at
one of the high school campuses compared
to students who do not have access to a
health clinic in their school.

strategies, including events, posters
and informational tables.
• Facilitate the recruitment of youth
support workers, who will fill a vital
new role in identifying students
under-utilizing MSHP services and
working with them to take control of
their health.
• Underwrite research allowing MSHP
leadership to evaluate the initiative
and set the stage for replication of the
model on the city, state and national
levels, if proven effective.
“The new Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Initiative will allow us to develop a more
robust approach to screening, educating and
communicating on how to improve sexual
health practices and reduce unintended
teen pregnancies,” explained David Appel,
M.D., Director of the Montefiore School
Health Program. “[This] will enable us to
help more teens achieve their academic and
personal goals.”

The program would assist owners in paying
for the costs of the improvements and they, in
turn, agree to use the imminent energy savings
to keep rents affordable for
tenants.
An information session
was held at the Bronx County
Building on Wed., June. 3rd.
The initiative was launched
in partnership with Village
Power, which will provide online service and
support to help finance, install and operate
solar and renewable energy solutions.
Administered by the Department of
Housing Preservation and Development
(HPD), the program is voluntary for Bronx
building owners. Owners consent to use the
expected savings from the energy upgrade
to keep rents affordable, and to pay back the
investment by leasing equipment.
“It is a great vision,” added David
Kane, Vice President of Project
Development of Village Power.
“It is an equipment-lease situation.
With the savings, you will pay back for
the equipment,” explained James Rausse,
Director of Capital Programs at the Office of
the Bronx Borough President.
The program will start with three to five
apartment buildings with 50 or more units
and would later expand to include smaller
buildings. The green upgrade in each building
would be comprehensive in order to optimize
their cost efficiency and maximize savings.

field-building
discussions on emerging
paradigms in public policy and non-profit
practice. The series seeks to highlight the
innovations of Bronx practitioners and the
grant making of New York-area funders—
their successes as well as disappointments—
as they grapple with new challenges in
communities and test pioneering approaches
to longstanding public policy issues.

“The whole goal is to keep rents affordable,”
said Rausse. “[All that is needed] is a handful
of buildings to show this program works.”
While new affordable housing buildings
in the borough tend by design to be
environmentally sustainable, the older
ones lack environmentally friendly, green
features. Advocates say improving upon the
existing housing stock preserves affordable
housing units and to improve tenants’ living
conditions.

He also anticipated an increase in
employment and training opportunities for
local residents interested in pursuing green
building and technology.

three beautiful Bronx babies,
photographer, writer and
motivator,” says contributor
Nilka Martell, of Puerto Rican
descent, as she continues to
explore her hometown.
Here is her latest installment.

The Point CDC’s 12th Annual Hunts
Point Fish Parade and Summer Festival has
been scheduled for Sat., Jun. 20th.
The mile-long procession begins at 11:30
a.m. at Hunts Point Riverside Park.
Marchers will make their way from
Lafayette Avenue to Manida Street and
across on Viele Street to Barretto Point
Park.
The focus is on celebrating the
community, its artists, workers and
residents, as well as bringing awareness to
environmental and socio-economic issues.
Many participants dress up as aquatic
wildlife, including as fish, mermaid and
mermen; some wear elaborate, handcrafted
costumes. Others don silly hats.
Dress up for a cause.
The idea is to point up the community’s
proximity to the park, and the continual efforts
to rehabilitate and reclaim the waterfront.
For the last several years, my children and
I have participated, and we have witnessed
how beautifully the parade has grown.
This year’s Grand Marshals are activist
Dr. Hetty Fox; musician and educator
Ray Santos, filmmaker Seyi Adebango;
Executive Director of Youth Ministries for
Peace and Justice David Shuffler; Mothers
on the Move’s Wanda Salaman; Bronx
culinary ambassador Baron Ambrosia
and activist and historian the late Morgan
Powell. I am proud to stand for the latter
honoree and my friend, as he will be
celebrated posthumously for his countless
contributions to our borough.
At Barretto Point Park, the festivities
continue. Some of the performers featured
will be Mariposa Fernandez, DJ Fabel Pabon
and Tools of War, FunkFace, the Bronx
Charter School for the Arts and Tanima
Production Inc. Dancers.
Local businesses, food vendors and artists
will table their services and crafts, and
organizations offer information on ways to
get involved.
The Bronx Trolley provides free
transportation from several points, including
Lafayette Avenue and Edgewater
Road, Hunts Point and Lafayette
Avenues, Hunts Point and
Spofford Avenues, and
Spofford Avenue and

Street.

folks who have
never visited the
area.
When
they
arrive at Barretto
Point Park, they often
ask the same questions.
“Are we still in the Bronx?”
and “How long has this park been
here?” are among the common
queries.
Some arrive with less-thanpositive views of the borough and of
the Hunts Point area.
It is quite satisfying to see their
attitude change when they walk
around the park and see its beauty
firsthand.
Barretto Point Park is also the
location of the “Floating Pool
Lady,” a public pool on a barge. If
you’d like to take a dip in the pool,
please make sure you have reviewed
the guidelines for entry prior to
Saturday.

Pescado de Hunts Point ‘Point
CDC’s’ y el Festival de Verano ha

La procesión de una milla de largo comienza

Fatima goes Fresh
A
s announced this past Mon.,
Jun. 15th, Fatima A. Shama,
born and raised in the Bronx, will
become the new Executive Director
of The Fresh Air Fund.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead
an organization that has had such a positive
impact on generations of children from lowincome communities,” said Shama. “I’ve
long admired The Fund’s dynamic work and
its committed board, and I look forward to
advancing The Fresh Air Fund’s mission
of providing unforgettable experiences
that expand the development, outlook and
imagination of children throughout our city.”
The non-profit Fund has provided summer
experiences for free to more than 1.8 million
New York City children from low-income
communities since its founding in 1877. “We look forward to the enthusiasm, deep
expertise and commitment to community that
Fatima will bring to this role,” said Board
Chairman William P. Lauder in a statement.
Shama serves currently as Vice President
of Strategic Development and External
Affairs at the Maimonides Medical Center in
Brooklyn. Prior to this role, Shama was the
Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office
of Immigrant Affairs in the Bloomberg
administration, a position she held for almost
four-and-a-half years. During her tenure, she created Blueprints
for Immigrant Integration, a how-to guide to
help other cities around the world enhance
their local immigrant integration efforts
through shared successful practices and
highlight the positive impact immigrants can
have on their communities.
“Fatima excelled at every position she held
over her eight years in our administration,”
said former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
“Whether she was working to improve
healthcare access for limited English
proficient New Yorkers, or to increase parental
engagement in our schools, or to develop new
ways to serve immigrant New Yorkers, she
never stopped thinking of how to better the
lives of New Yorkers.”
Shama, the daughter of a Brazilian mother
and a Palestinian father, speaks six languages.
She earned a BA from Binghamton University
and a Masters in Public Administration from
Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs
Executive Program.
She will assume her new role effective July
15, 2015.

s a child, she was categorized
as at risk.
Not too much was expected from the only
daughter of Dominican immigrants in a
working class neighborhood.
“I was [considered] at risk to success,” said
Ferreras. “Often, we have been told about
things we couldn’t do.”
Today, as the Chair of the City Council’s
powerful Finance Committee, she oversees
billions of dollars of city spending.

During a panel on body image, self-esteem
and the role of media for which she served
as moderator, Tan recalled that as a young
girl, she felt like a bit of an outsider growing
up in a predominantly white community in
Syracuse.

El pasado viernes 12 de junio, ella
celebró durante una reunión de “Chicas del
Ayuntamiento”, como parte del Festival Mundial
de las Mujeres (WOW por sus siglas en inglés) en
el Teatro Apolo.
El festival fue una celebración multidisciplinaria
de cuatro días, con actuaciones, pláticas y
activismo para honrar y celebrar el poder de las
mujeres y las niñas.
Celebrado en colaboración con el Southbank
Michelle Tan es directora de
la Revista Seventeen.
Centre de Londres, el festival de este año se
presentó en el Apolo y en el City College de
Nueva York de la City University de Nueva York

Mothers on the move
S
he answered the phone to the
worst imaginable news.
When Juanita Morgan picked up the
receiver, it was to hear that her son had died.
It was Christmas Day, 1999.
The news came in a rush – her son William
Dean died under unclear circumstances in a
Canadian penitentiary facility.
Nine years earlier, her son Leon, then 21,
had been shot dead at a bar on Lenox Avenue.
By a 16-year-old boy.
Morgan is far from alone.
To raise awareness against gun violence and
to urge against future loss of life, she joined
with other mothers for a full day of advocacy
this past June 11th.
The event was organized by mothers,
residents and leaders from across the city,
including Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. (an
acronym for Stop Another Violent End),
Public Advocate Letitia “Tish” James,
members of the New York Police Department
(NYPD), representatives of insurance provider
Healthfirst and the New York Knicks.
“Let’s take back our community,”
explained Jackie Rowe-Adams, Co-Founder
and President of Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E.,
which seeks to combat gun violence. “Let’s
help these mothers who had a loss and help
them heal.”

El festival ofreció obras de arte de estudiantes
de primaria y secundaria de los barrios de Grand
Concourse, Morrisania y Tremont, en el extremo
oeste del sur del Bronx.
“Es una manera de fomentar la colaboración
en nuestra comunidad”, explicó Leticia
Rodríguez-Rosario, superintendente del
distrito, y agregó que el festival fue uno de
los aproximadamente 15 eventos planeados
durante el año escolar para fortalecer los lazos
comunitarios.

in District 9 are not able to frequent cultural
institutions and museums.
Building on the students’ creative
experiences, the festival also provided an
opportunity for one winning artist to be
selected – and awarded a free one-year
family membership to the Bronx Museum of
the Arts.

families will spend more
time outdoors. Exposure to the
sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV)
rays increases the risk of skin
cancer, which is why proper sun
protection is essential. In fact, the
sun’s UV rays are responsible for
about 90 percent of nonmelanoma
skin cancers and 86 percent of
melanomas.
“Exposure to UV
radiation is directly
linked to all three
forms of skin cancer,”
said Perry Robins, MD,
president of The Skin
Cancer
Foundation.
“By adopting good sun
safety habits families
can enjoy summer outdoor activities
without increasing their skin cancer risk.”
The Skin Cancer Foundation offers the
following tips to help enjoy a sun-safe
summer:
At the Beach
•Use a broad spectrum sunscreen daily. For
extended outdoor activity, use a waterresistant broad spectrum (UVA/UVB)
sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Reapply every two hours or after swimming
or excessive sweating.
•Cover up with clothing. Look for high-UPF
(Ultraviolet Protection Factor) swim shirts
or rash guards, and choose bathing suits that
cover more skin, like one-piece suits and
long trunks. Make sure to apply and reapply
sunscreen to exposed areas of the skin not
covered by fabric. To help avoid missing
spots apply sunscreen before putting on
your bathing suit. When shopping for highUPF clothing, look for The Skin Cancer
Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.
• Avoid tanning. There is
no such thing as a safe tan,
because tanning itself is
caused by DNA damage to the
skin. In addition to increasing skin cancer
risk, tanning also leads to premature skin
aging, including wrinkles, leathery skin
and age spots.

shade. Advise kids to play in shaded areas to
limit UV exposure. Check with counselors
to see if there are adequate places for

installed, remember that it protects you only
when the windows are closed. When shopping

Drivers beware. Nearly 53 percent of
skin cancers in the US occur on the left, or
drivers’ side of the body. Don’t forget to
apply sunscreen, particularly when spending
extended time in a car that has no window
film.

•Do not burn. At any age, a person’s risk for
melanoma doubles if he or she has ever had
five or more sunburns.
•Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreen
should be used on babies over the age of six
months.

District (BID) will present the Bronx Little
Italy’s First Art Show on Sun., Jun. 28th from
11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Local art along with pieces
reminiscent of Italy will be on display at the
show, as part of a local street fair, which will
run from Arthur Avenue from East 187th
Street to Crescent Avenue.
The Belmont BID will also accept
applications from artists who would like

a magazine, the young woman of Filipino
descent realized that the norms of beauty
were greater than any one definition.
She has since sought to be part of
amplifying those standards, pursuing an
editorial career that led her to the helm
of the 70-year-old magazine for young
women.
“Seventeen is the place where everybody
should feel like they belong,” said Tan.
Other discussions explored were how
to prepare and empower young women to
assume and sustain leadership roles in all
fields, and how to pursue careers in science
and technology.
“My job is to encourage young women
to run for political office,” explained
Running Start’s Susannah Wellford, whose
organization helps young women interested
in politics to acquire applicable skill sets.
The non-partisan Running Start was
founded in 2007 in an effort to educate and
engage girls and women on public service.
“Politics is the most direct way to make
change,” she argued.
CCNY President Lisa Staiano-Coico’s
interests were forged early.
Recognized nationally as a prominent
educator and researcher in microbiology
and immunology, Dr. Staiano-Coico’s
inspiration to study science came from a
second grade teacher, who provided her
young pupil with a book on rocks and
minerals.
She acknowledged that she had
encountered opposition along the way, and
recounted being told a number of times that
she didn’t belong in the field because of her
gender.

But Dr. Staiano-Coico would have none of it.
She assured her audience that being a
scientist had proven to be “a lot of fun” and had
provided the opportunity to pursue a variety of
interests.
“It is never boring,” she said. “I can follow
my curiosity.”
She urged those in attendance to persist.
“Don’t ever give up your seat at the table to
anybody,” she said.

own big idea.
After attending Girls Who Code, a 7-week
intensive computer science program, the two
created a video game called Tampon Runner.

shows you can be anything you want and be
comfortable being yourself.”
One voice, though, had really stood out.

Even in its darkest period, the Bronx created young hip hop artists in music,
dance, art, and poetry in the forms of deejay mixes, b-boying, graffiti, and rap.
Chalfant shows how closely linked are the two cultures of salsa and breaking.

New York City’s borough of the South Bronx was home to many of the new
immigrants from Puerto Rico, Cuba, and other Caribbean islands in the late 40s
and early 50s. Machito had already made his musical mark with his Afro-Cuban
mixture of Caribbean music and jazz. Mambo ruled the dance floor. Soon Ray
Barreto, Willie Colon, and Eddie Palmieri joined existing bands and then formed
their own groups to introduce new songs, rhythms, and dances, all of which
eventually led to the salsa revolution of the 1970s. The Fania All-Stars propelled
salsa across the nation and beyond.

Growing up in the midst of salsa rhythms, younger dancers, both African
American and Latinos, responded most strongly to the instrumental “breaks”
being selected by deejays rebelling against the disco craze of the 70s. Soon
mixes of these breaks became the music for “break dancers” (eventually known
as b-boys/b-girls).
