s it marked a centennial
milestone, Transit Wireless
has announced that 37 additional
underground uptown stations are
slated to be outfitted with cell
phone and Wi-Fi service by
the end of this year.
The company, which just
wired its 100th Metropolitan
Transportation
Authority
(MTA) underground subway
station, has commenced
Phase 4 of the expansion
to additional MTA stations
located in the Bronx and
Northern Manhattan.
Specifically, Phase 4 of the cell phone
and Wi-Fi network build-out covers 20
underground stations in the Bronx and 17
stations in Northern Manhattan.

Moreover, Transit Wireless announced
that it now has over 100 stations wired
and online and is on track to wire all 279
underground stations by 2017, several
months ahead of schedule with strong
support from New York City Transit (NYCT).
“The MTA has been on a clearly defined
mission to improve our mass transit system
with upgrades to the station environment
through several ambitious new-technology
communications projects like this one, aimed
at improving the travel experiences of our
customers while offering another level of
security,” said MTA Chairman and CEO
Thomas F. Prendergast.
By the end of Phase 4, around 72 million
monthly riders will be able to receive free
wireless and Wi-Fi service as they travel in
the underground subway stations located
in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx.
The nation’s largest mobile carriers,
AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon
Wireless, continue to partner with the
MTA and Transit Wireless to provide
wireless service to their customers in the
subway system’s underground stations.

cellular service through the four major
U.S. carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and
Verizon Wireless), or select the “Transit
Wireless WiFi” network on their mobile
devices to access the free Wi-Fi service
and NYC centric content via CityBuzz.

while in stations. Around 95% of users
connect through their smartphones to obtain
information on news, travel information,
technology, and entertainment.
The most active users, according to Transit
Wireless, are young adults (18-24) and young
professionals (25-34) by 30% and 36%,

students are becoming more physically
fit, while helping provide essential food
to malnourished kids in the process.
Through a month-long health initiative known
as UNICEF Kid Power, students at P.S. 307
in Kingsbridge are monitoring their physical
activity with special fitness armbands that
display the number of steps they’ve taken
each day.

believe we can reach a day when no child dies
of a cause we know how to prevent.”

Launched in early March, the 30-day
P.S. 307 students are monitoring their physical activity with fitness armbands.
Kid Power program has engaged more than
4,000 kids throughout New York City, while
also being conducted in Boston and Dallas.
Every five points that participants earn
through their activity armband translates
to one packet of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic
Food (RUTF), a specially-designed, vitaminrich peanut paste that is used to save the lives
of starving children.
“The kids get so excited in gym class,
because they know that their exercise is
helping people,” said Maturen.
P.S. 307 kids monitor their progress
through a real-time online leaderboard, where
they view how many RUTF packets they’ve
unlocked as individuals and as a class, as well
as their contributions to the city’s total.
The armband itself provides constant audio
updates when students have reached point
milestones.

n grupo de estudiantes de escuela

A
quarter of a century has
passed.
But the pain lingers on.
This past Wed., March 25th marked the
25th anniversary of the fateful night when
Julio González burned down Happy Land,
a social club on Southern Boulevard that
was popular with Hondurans and other
Central Americans.
After an argument with Lydia Feliciano,
a former girlfriend and a Happy Land coat
check employee, González was escorted
out of the venue.
Moments later, he returned to 1959
Southern Boulevard at East Tremont Avenue
with a $1 worth of gas and a couple of
matches. He poured the gasoline through the
club’s one entrance and the front hall. It was
aflame in an instant.
The club had no sprinklers or fire exits.
Within minutes, 87 people had died, mostly
due to smoke inhalation.
Lt. Richard Bittles was with Ladder 58,
which was the first FDNY company to arrive.
“It was eerie, no noise, no one outside,”
he recalled in published reports in 2010.
“We made our way upstairs to the blackness,
and when we shone a light, two people were
sitting at a table, dead. It was surreal.”
González, now in his sixties, is currently
serving 174 twenty-five year sentences, and
was denied parole in early March.

Follow the funds

That was the message New York
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli sent to
residents regarding unclaimed funds during
a personal visit to the borough this past Fri.,
Mar. 27th.
DiNapoli, the state’s chief fiscal officer,
was joined by Bronx Borough President
Rubén Díaz Jr. in calling upon residents to
claim nearly $245 million in forgotten funds.
Unclaimed funds are monies owed to New
York residents; some dates back to the 1940’s.
In total, there are 31 million unclaimed
accounts valued at $13 billion.
New Yorkers can check for unclaimed
funds by using the Comptroller’s online
system or by calling his office directly.
DiNapoli recommended using the online
system, if possible, to get any possible returns
faster. Residents can determine if there are
forgotten funds to be claimed simply by

But unclaimed money is not going
anywhere, assured the Comptroller, whose
office oversees the funds until they are
returned to the rightful owners.
“We hold these accounts in perpetuity until
we find the rightful owners or the rightful
owners finds us,” assured DiNapoli.
“Most often these [the accounts] are
typically old bank accounts,” he added.
When a bank lack customers’ updated
information and the accounts reflect no
activity for an extended period, the bank
has to turn the accounts to the state.
The funds may also come from utility
deposits, uncashed checks, insurance
claims, stocks and other sources that
have been dormant for a number of
years.
While many of the accounts are for
small sums, there are those that contain
several thousand dollars.
“Some of these accounts have
accumulated interest,” said DiNapoli.
Since January 2015, a total of $1.6
million in unclaimed funds has been
returned to Bronx residents.
On Friday, the Borough President led
by example and entered his name onto
the site to check for unclaimed funds,
and promptly found an older account
that he’d forgotten about.
Diaz urged Bronxites to check for
themselves – and tied it to an economic
incentive that would benefit the whole
borough.
“If everybody in the Bronx could recover
their money, it would make an impact on the
local economy,” he argued.
The Comptroller was even more direct.
“Bronx residents, this is your money,”
exhorted DiNapoli. “Come get it!”
Residents can check for unclaimed funds
by using the Comptroller’s online claiming
system at www.osc.state.ny.us, or by calling
1.800.221.9311 to speak with English and
Spanish-speaking representatives, Monday
through Friday from 8:00 a.m. through
4:30 p.m.

Lincoln Medical Center in the
South Bronx has received the
international “Baby-Friendly”
designation, an honor granted by
a global initiative sponsored by
the World Health Organization
(WHO) and the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Lincoln is now the only hospital in The
Bronx, the third within the NYC Health
and Hospitals Corporation, and the fourth
citywide, to receive this recognition by
“Baby-Friendly USA”. The initiative was
established to encourage hospitals to offer
an optimal level of care for breastfeeding
mothers, infants and their families.
Since 2009, Lincoln has implemented
major improvements that have enhanced
services and care for pregnant women and
babies, such as a new and expanded Labor
and Delivery Suite, which include state-ofthe-art postpartum, neonatal and nursery
units. In addition, the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit has added a breast milk pumping
room for mothers, and a Breastfeeding
Team that includes seven specialized
nurses.
The Women, Infants and Children
Program (WIC) inaugurated another
lactation room, and also provides a
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, and a
monthly Breastfeeding Club for group
support. In 2013, the hospital updated its
procedures to ensure that mothers and their
newborns would not be separated after
birth unless there is a medical need.
Similarly, the staff at Lincoln receives
training, and a poster campaign highlights
the importance of breastfeeding within
the hospital. A Breastfeeding Committee

that encompasses at least six major units
has further ensured that Lincoln provides
the information, confidence and skills that
mothers need to successfully initiate and
continue breastfeeding.
In 2014, Lincoln received the
International Board Certified
Lactation Consultant Care
Award, another major
global recognition for
excellence in lactation
care.
Lincoln had 2,267
births in 2014. Of those,
93% of the mothers
initiated breastfeeding.
The figure surpasses
the 82% intended-target of mothers to
initiate breastfeeding by the year 2020, set
by the Surgeon General’s Healthy People
Initiative.
Studies
have
demonstrated
that
breastfeeding provides health benefits
to both mother and baby. Breastfed
newborns have lower risk of ear and
respiratory infections, diabetes and obesity.
Breastfeeding mothers have lower risk for
breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes and
postpartum depression.
The Bronx has the highest level of
obesity, asthma and diabetes, which are less
likely to occur in breastfeeding families.
Promoting the benefits of breastfeeding
and supporting mothers who do, will help
make the Bronx healthier, one mother and
baby at a time.

y los ovarios, diabetes y depresión postpartum.

is again on the search for 24
college-bound teens from South
Bronx schools to participate in
the History Makers Scholars
program this summer at Fordham
University.
The five-week summer program, which is
held each year, will last from June 30 to July
31, and will center on Fordham’s Rose Hill
campus at 441 East Fordham Road.
History Makers is a collaboration of
BronxWorks’ Center for Achieving Future
Education (CAFÉ) and Fordham’s Dorothy
Day Center for Service and Justice, and
is enabled by a grant from the Teagle
Foundation.
The History Makers Scholars will be
assigned independent research projects
related to the African-American experience
in the Bronx, leading up to papers that will
be presented at a graduation assembly at the
end of the program, said Jean-Pierre LaCour,
coordinator of CAFÉ and organizer of
History Makers. In addition to proving they
can conduct “college-level history research
beyond the textbook,” participants will also
gain familiarity with the routines of campus
life applicable to any college they attend, he
noted.

This past Fri., Mar. 27th was a special
day for the aspiring singer Nailyn, a
resident at the Jackson Avenue Family
Residence.
The five-year-old and other preschool aged children had gathered to
celebrate new arrivals – in the form of
furniture, toys, books and games that
were now theirs to share.
The residence, on East 138th Street,
was one of four residences affiliated
with the New York City Department
of Homeless Services (DHS) that
would receive pre-school furniture
and education items from the Garden
of Dreams Foundation, a charitable
organization affiliated with Madison
Square Garden.
Among the items donated were
storage units, art supplies, musical
instruments, and educational books.
Donations, which were worth $50,000
in total, were also made to support day
care programs at additional residences
in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
Eleni Gavalas has been a
Rockette for three years.
“I like the computer and the painting
areas,” said Nailyn, moments after
charming the audience with her
interpretation of “Let it Go.”
Through its newly launched Giving
Program, the Garden of Dreams
Foundation provides resources to assist
underserved children and kids with
pressing needs.
In addition, children received tickets
to see Spring Spectacular, currently
being performed at Radio City Music
Hall by the New York City Rockettes.

students an academic
“guarantee.”
And if students agree to the conditions,
they’ll be able to enroll in an innovative
degree program that is the first of its kind at
any CUNY institution.
The college’s new Fast 4 Business program,
launched this semester, offers a bachelors
degree in business administration (BBA)
to both full-time and part-time students
committed to completing 30 credit hours
per year. This pilot program’s goal is to
significantly increase the number of firstgeneration and nontraditional students earning
college degrees.
The American Council on Education chose
just nine schools nationally to participate in
its Change and Innovation Lab (CIL) project,
first announced in 2014.
Lehman’s BBA degree program was
selected for the pilot program because it is the
school’s largest and most popular major.
Mercy College is the only other school in
New York State participating in the pilot.
“The Fast 4 Business program is a pilot
program that is designed to encourage
students to complete their BBA in a timely
manner—that is four years for those entering
as freshmen and two years for transfer
students,” said Professor Dene Hurley, the
former Chair of the Department of Economics
and Business, and now Interim Associate
Dean of the Lehman School of Natural and
Social Science.
The Fast 4 Business program is funded by
a $400,000-grant by the Lumina Foundation,
a private foundation committed to increasing
the proportion of Americans with high-quality
degrees, certificates and other credentials to 60
percent by 2025.
Students have the flexibility of beginning
studies in the spring, summer or fall. The
first Fast Four class has seven students this
spring – and the goal is to expand in upcoming
semesters.
“We are truly excited to be a part of this
innovative pilot program,” said Lehman
President Ricardo R. Fernández. “Lehman’s
commitment to supporting nontraditional
students will be well served by our Department
of Economics and Business.”
Lehman’s degree “guarantee” comes with a
set of requirements that students must fulfill
to receive a diploma. Dean Hurley said that
fulfilling those standards allows students
access to academic opportunities such as
special major advising, priority registration
into required major courses, textbook vouchers
and mass transit discounts.

meant to be broken.
In its fourth year, the Uptown Games, held
this past Sat., Mar. 28th by Senator Adriano
Espaillat, Councilmembers Ydanis Rodríguez
and Mark Levine, the Armory Foundation and
the New York Road Runners, hosted more
youth runners than ever before.
Over 600 students in the third through
eighth grades – from more than 40 schools
from the Bronx and Northern Manhattan –
flocked to The Armory New Balance Track
and Field Center.
Students received athletic instruction from
New York Road Runners and Armory staff
members before participating in short and
long distance races, team relays, hurdles and
other events throughout the day.
Participants and their families were
also offered information on nutrition and
healthcare resources.
“Keeping our children active and healthy
must be our community’s highest priority,”
said Councilmember Rodríguez. “By
teaching our children the skills necessary
to keep moving we set them on a path to a
healthier future.”
And there was also a surprise announcement.
A summer Uptown Games, a second
family-friendly sporting and wellness event,
is planned for June 14th at the Riverbank
State Park.
“I am extremely excited that we will be
holding a second Uptown Games this year,”
said Sen. Espaillat. “Over the past four years
more than 1000 students have competed
in the Uptown Games. We want to build on
that success and expand our efforts to lower
childhood obesity rates by creating another
opportunity to compete.”

Commissioner of Taxation and
Finance Nonie Manion provided
consumer protection tips for
taxpayers who decide to do so.
Approximately 70 percent of the
state’s 10 million income taxpayers
hire tax preparers.
“Filing a return is often the most
important financial transaction of the entire
year for many taxpayers,”
Commissioner Manion said. “Don’t be shy. Ask for
recommendations when
selecting a tax preparer
and shop around. Deal
with someone you know to
be a trustworthy advisor.”
New York is just one
of four states nationwide
to regulate tax return preparers. More than
40,000 preparers have registered with New
York State.
In an effort to make sure your tax return
is accurate and complete, Commissioner
Manion suggested asking the preparer these
four questions:
• Are you registered with the IRS and
New York State? Most tax preparers
are required to be registered both
with the IRS and NYS.
• How much will it cost? Ask to see a list
of fees. The fee should be directly related
to the services provided, and not the
refund amount. Also, by law, preparers
cannot charge to e-file in NYS.

Lourdes Rivera clearly does not need
caffeine to get her moving.
The Senior Program Officer at the Ford
Foundation works in the fields of sexual
and reproductive health and justice, and she
lent her formidable voice as an honoree at
a gathering of the New York City Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce (NYCHCC) during
its Ninth Annual Hispanic Women in Business
Luncheon this past Wed., Mar. 25th.
Her grantmaking work at the Ford
Foundation focuses on building a more
diverse and inclusive movement within the
fight for reproductive justice, such that it
reflects the needs of marginalized groups and
helps secure legal and policy advances.
“Unfortunately, there are still too many
barriers for women,” she added.
But the challenges clearly have not
dampened her commitment.
Rivera was honored together with three
fellow women leaders of industry and service.
“We are honoring four women that represent
other ladies in a very successful manner,” said
Nick Lugo, NYCHCC President. “We hold them
up as role models so others follow.”
The luncheon was sponsored by Carver Bank,
Entergy, Wellcare, Bronx Lebanon Hospital
Center, and United Metro Corp.
Rivera was recognized beside Jacqueline
Horowitz, Project Executive at Turner
Construction; María Cristina Marrero, Group
Content Chief at Meredith Hispanic Media; and
Monika Mantilla, President and CEO of Altura
Capital.
Among those in attendance was Borough
President Rubén Díaz, Jr.
“We know that since the beginning of times,
women are the pillars of humanity,” said Díaz.
“Unfortunately, history has not been kind to
women. History has minimized and even ignored
women.”
Eileen Guzzo, President and CEO at the
Donnelly and Moore Corporation, and an
honoree in her own right in 2014, officiated as
Mistress of Ceremony.
Guzzo noted that women leaders are often the
ultimate multi-taskers.
“Many of these ladies honored today are
mothers and have families,” said the mother of
three, who moved from Argentina in 1990 and
started her IT recruitment firm in 1997 from the
basement of her New Jersey home. She encouraged women to embrace success.
“We are high achievers,” said Guzzo

fighting for equal pay for equal jobs,” said
Wylde, noting that female workers in New
York State are paid 86 percent of what their
male counterparts are paid for the same job.
The most progress, asserted Wylde, has
been made in the entrepreneurial sector,
as there are 9.1 million women-owned
businesses in America.
Unfortunately, however, many of these
businesses lacked opportunities to grow.
“The issue is not so much start-up
businesses but growth,” said Wilde.

Restaurantes de Washington Heights
e Inwood, apodada #WHIN & DINE,
pronto estará de regreso.
En los restaurantes participantes, de

by taking more than 16 million steps.
UNICEF distributes RUTF packets in
dozens of countries around the world,
including Haiti, Madagascar, Indonesia and
Mauritania.
Packets can be delivered in a matter of
weeks after being earned by Kid Power
participants, said a UNICEF spokesperson.
Kid Power’s recent three-city unveiling
followed a four-week pilot program held
October 2014 in Sacramento, CA, which
included nearly 900 students, teachers and
teaching assistants.
Students engaged in the pilot were found
to be 55 percent more physically active, and
earned enough therapeutic food packets to
feed 473 severely malnourished children.
“I can’t think of a better motivator for kids to
get active than the fact that they’re helping save
lives,” said Stern.
Maturen said her students have received an
eye-opening lesson on the struggles of some
children around the globe.
“It’s shocking to many of them when they
learn that kids in other parts of the world don’t
have access to clean water, or any food to eat,”
she explained. “Even though many Bronx kids
live in poor neighborhoods themselves, there
are people elsewhere in even worse situations,
who can’t acquire the most basic resources.”
The Kid Power program, which also
incorporates classroom lessons and fitness
activities, is expected to launch in additional
cities starting in late 2015.
“My kids feel that they’re part of something
really important,” said Maturen. “It’s amazing
that by taking a routine step, they’re actually
making a difference in the world.”

who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
Last year I had the honor of being keynote
speaker at the Bronx Volunteer Coalition’s
First Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards
Ceremony.
It was an amazing evening. All the
nominees were presented with certificates,
and winners in four specific categories
received a plaque.
Last year’s winners were: Kashawn
Wright, who was recognized as a “Young
Volunteers Leader”; Eileen Bonilla, who
was honored for her “Neighborhood
Impact”; Janny Olivera, who was singled
out as a “Lifetime Volunteer” and the group
Changing the Odds, which was celebrated
for its “Organized Volunteer Impact”.
The night was filled with inspiring stories
on volunteer work. Everyone had different
experiences and different ways in which
they gave back to the Bronx community –
and each was equally passionate.
Now, it’s time for this year’s stars to
shine.
The Bronx Volunteer Coalition is
currently accepting nominations for this
year’s awards celebration.
You can nominate a wonderful volunteer
in your midst; it’s easy.

Among the chief qualifications is
ensuring that the nominee be a resident
of the Bronx and do their volunteer work
within the borough.
Select the category of nomination and
fill out the short form. The nominee will be

Once the nomination period is over, the
online voting process begins.
Last year over 6000 online votes were

of the Arts.
This year’s keynote speaker is Paula

Service.
This is a great way to recognize a
volunteer. Those who give freely of their
time typically do not look for attention.
Instead, they serve because they want to,
because it is a valuable part of their lives.

2015 season of Seniors Fitness
programs will begin the week
of April 27th, and will offer free
tennis lessons, yoga instruction
and fitness walking in 15 parks
across the city, including
Soundview, Pelham Bay, and Van
Cortlandt Parks in the Bronx.
CityParks Seniors Fitness has served over
7,000 participants since it began in 2006 and
aims to keep neighborhood parks a great
place for community activity. The program
encourages New Yorkers to maximize the
health benefits of staying active at all ages.
Even in moderate amounts, exercise can
help participants feel better, maintain or
lose weight, reduce risk of heart disease and
diabetes, and minimize the symptoms of
arthritis.
“Exercise is so important at all ages, but it is
especially important for seniors who typically
lead more sedentary lifestyles,” says Mike
Silverman, Director of Sports at City Parks
Foundation. “We’ve found that exercising
even just once a week helps participants feel
better mentally and emotionally. Seniors
Fitness is a great opportunity for seniors
to be social and meet new people in their
neighborhoods, while getting outside and
having some fun.”
All activities in this eight-week fitness
program take place once or twice a week at
each location through June 19th.

UHF Honors Volunteers

he United Hospital Fund
hosted its 22nd annual
Hospital Auxilian and Volunteer
Achievement Awards ceremony at
the Waldorf-Astoria, honoring 84
volunteers and auxilians.
Among them were many local Bronx who
provide service to 60 hospitals or hospital
divisions throughout the greater New York
metropolitan area.
NY1 News’ Cheryl Wills was the special
guest at the event on Fri., Mar. 13th, which
drew nearly 700 attendees to the hotel’s
Grand Ballroom.
The honorees were chosen from among
New York City’s thousands of hospital
volunteers, who collectively provide millions
of hours of service annually. They range in
age from their teens to their 90’s and come
from all walks of life—student, customer
service representative, accountant, writer,
artist; retired teacher, nurse, social worker;
parent and grandparent. They have provided,
on average, more than ten years of volunteer
service—some first motivated by their
own experiences as patients—in virtually
every hospital setting, from gifts shops and
fundraising departments to emergency rooms
and clinics.
“This annual event spotlights the
extraordinary dedication and contributions of
caring volunteers, who share their time and
talents to support patients and their families
and provide valuable extensions of hospital
services,” said Jim Tallon, President of the
United Hospital Fund. “Story after story, I am
reminded of how much these giving people
care, as well as the impact of their caring.”
Each of the honored volunteers has an
inspiring, often compelling story to share.
Yunirda Acosta was SBH Health System’s
(St. Barnabas Hospital’s) honoree at the
United Hospital Fund’s Hospital Auxilian
and Volunteer Achievement Awards. In

Acosta has been an invaluable volunteer,
assisting in the Volunteer Office and with
the Patient Portal called Followmy Health,
a secure, convenient way for patients to

by roaming the hospital in search of—and
reaching out to—patients’ family members
who might benefit from the center’s
supportive services.

at the Museum. The most successful stories have been those
drawn from the storyteller's experience in the Bronx. The event
culminates with an open-mic portion during which audience
members perform their own short stories, poems, or songs.

Dear Jocelyn,
Dry skin is not uncommon
this time of year. Many people
suffer from it as a result of the
cold weather and sauna-hot
apartments that are typical of
New York winters. Luckily, there
are a few basic things you can
do to decrease itchiness and
improve the overall condition
of your skin.
To begin with, as tempting as
a piping hot shower is in this
weather, it will only make dry
skin worse. Take moderately
warm showers instead and
apply moisturizer as soon as
you step out, when your skin
is still damp and can most
easily absorb it. Secondly,
keep yourself hydrated with
plenty of water.
No matter how cold it is
outside, it’s still recommended
that individuals drink about
eight glasses of water each
day in order to keep skin and
other vital organs in good
shape.
Lastly, you may want to
purchase a humidifier. It
will moisten the air in your
apartment
and
improve
any dry skin or breathing
symptoms you may have due
to excessive indoor heat.
If you’re drinking plenty of
water, avoiding super-hot showers
and
applying
moisturizer
and, still, your skin is dry and
uncomfortable, you should visit
your primary care physician.
Extremely dry skin can
be a symptom of a more
serious skin condition such
as eczema, as well as a
number of other conditions.
