H. Everett Alpine House is home to diminutive — but tough — rock garden plants, perfectly suited to life atop wind-swept mountains. Early spring is always the right time of year to showcase this charming garden space, before the sheer lushness of summer takes over all the senses. Wave Hill has dedicated one weekend day each year to alpine trough-making and trough-planting, inspired by their Alpine House. Guests are also urged to stop in Glyndor Gallery as well and enjoy James Walsh’s wall installation. He has focused on two alpine plants for the work, which is part of the spring exhibition titled Prickly, Tender and Steamy. As he comments in the show’s catalogue, “I’ve always had an affinity for sparse northern landscapes, which has led to my current project on the arctic plants of New York City, and many of the arctic plants are also alpine plants.” Happy May! The setting is not a sleek coffee shop or even a college campus ― it’s the local probation office. At the South Bronx Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) on 161st Street, area probationers meet with their officers and access resources to aid them with education, employment and contributing positively to the community. It is also where Johnson hosts a weekly poetry class and open mic for probation clients, staff and local residents. Recently, the group published a new edition of Free Verse, a journal of poetry, prose and song. Johnson said the program grew from an attempt to give probation clients something constructive to do while waiting for an appointment with their officer. “The average wait to speak with a probation officer is several hours long,” explained Johnson. “There was a lot of tension and anger at the site because people were sitting around all day with nothing to do.” That led the New York City Department of Probation to launch a comprehensive effort to turn waiting time into creative time. Nearly two years ago, the South Bronx NeON office was renovated to make the space more inviting and useful, and Johnson was brought on board to engage clients as a The verdict of verse The second edition of Free Verse, a journal of poetry, prose and song, includes work by probation officer Esteban Rivera. poet-in-residence, handing out poems to those sitting in the lobby. “At first, I got a lot of blank stares,” recalled Johnson. “Most people here had no interest in poetry, but I kept at it.” Eventually, clients became intrigued enough to start writing their own verses in the waiting room to pass the time, which then led to the weekly workshops. “We had clients showing up to the probation office on days they weren’t even scheduled to be here, just to read or write poetry,” said Johnson. “That’s when I knew we were having a big impact.” The group soon expanded to include South Bronx NeON workers and members of the local community, who helped contribute to the first edition of Free Verse in fall 2013. A second volume debuted this April; Johnson said he received nearly 400 submissions for the latest journal, most of which was written in the probation office’s waiting room. “This workshop has been great for bonding the community,” remarked Johnson. “We get all kinds of people participating, who aren’t even connected with the probation office.” At the weekly workshops, attendees write their own poem, then immediately get up and read it to the group. Probation clients who show the most dedication and promise now serve as paid writing apprentices, and assist with creating Free Verse. “For some clients, it’s been years since they held a job, so these apprenticeships are very helpful to their self-esteem,” said Johnson. This past Thurs., Apr. 17th, the Department of Probation marked the release of the latest Free Verse with a party at South Bronx NeON, where people gathered to hear readings by several contributors. “I’ve done things in my life I’m not proud of,” said probationer Noel Cuadrado. “But I’m a different person now, and I’m proud of this,” he said prior to reading one of his works. Abu Tahiru Sillah, a community resident, said that the poetry workshops allowed him to examine his innermost feelings. “I now know my real self,” he stated. “I learned how to work hard.” Hickey, along with several other local reporters and news anchors, will perform at a benefit to raise funds for a Bronx preschool program that assists children with special needs. Now in its fourth year, Hickey’s annual “Come to the Cabaret” event supports Astor Services for Children and Families’ Lawrence F. Hickey Center for Child Development. The therapeutic preschool program, located at 4010 Dyre Avenue, is named in honor of Hickey’s father. This year’s Cabaret, which includes a silent auction, will be staged at the Convent of the Sacred Heart School in Manhattan. It begins with a reception at 1 p.m, with the performance to follow at 2 p.m. Besides Hickey, the show features PIX 11 anchors Tamsen Fadal, Scott Sanford, Kaity Tong and Marvin Scott; Fox 5 news anchor Ernie Anastos; PIX 11 weatherman Irv “Mr. G” Gikofsky; WNBC 4 reporter Andrew Siff; and more. Veteran reporter Magee Hickey has hosted the “Come to the Cabaret” event for the past four years. The seeds for Cabaret for a Cause were sown when Hickey, always a fan of music and theater, decided to overcome her fear of performing in public by taking a singing class. “I was once too nervous to sing in front of people,” she told The Bronx Free Press. “But after that class a few years ago, I thought the idea of a cabaret with news colleagues would be a fun thing to do to raise money.” Though the audience might be more accustomed to seeing these television personalities behind an anchor’s desk or reporting from a crime scene, Hickey said that her charity event provides them with a chance to show a different side. “You’d be surprised at how musically talented everyone is,” she remarked. “Some participants even sing original numbers.” James McGuirk, Executive Director of Astor Services for Children and Families, praised Hickey and her family for supporting the preschool program. “We are so thankful to Magee and the entire Hickey family for all that they do on behalf our children and families,” he said. Vea CABARET p17 5 “No Hitting Zone” Op/Ed Una nueva iniciativa de seguridad infantil en el Hospital Lincoln A new children’s safety initiative at Lincoln Medical Center By Dr. Nina Agrawal, M.D. A pril is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx is unveiling a new initiative that seeks to create a safe, caring and supportive environment for children, increase awareness of alternatives to physical discipline, and prevent injuries to children. The initiative, called “No Hitting Zone”, is a response to the urgent need for child abuse prevention education at Lincoln Medical Center, where approximately 45 new cases of child abuse are brought to the emergency department each month. The community served by Lincoln Medical Center accounts for nearly 50% of all the child abuse cases in the Bronx, according to the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). Other statistics show that 30 out of 1,000 children in the surrounding area have been abused - more than three times the national victimization rate. Hospital staff can often witness child abuse such as hitting, slapping or spanking. The “No Hitting Zone” program gives nurses, social workers and doctors, the tools and resources that they need to protect the child’s safety, by enacting a policy that no adult can hit a child in pediatric patient care areas at Lincoln Medical Center. The policy also supports parents by teaching effective non-physical, developmentally appropriate ways to respond to a child’s behavior. As part of the program, “No Hitting Zone” posters will be placed in the Pediatric Clinic, and the staff will be trained on strategies to de-escalate potentially abusive situations between adults and their children. In addition, caregivers will receive ageappropriate discipline tip sheets, among other resources. If you become frustrated with your child’s behavior, observe the following tips outlined in the “No Hitting Zone” posters: • Stop: Hitting a child will not help. • Breathe: Step back and count to 10. • Remember: Hitting hurts and teaches violence. This year, the pageant also has two separate competitions for males and females between the ages of 29 to 59. Last year marked first year that males were admitted. Among the many organizers gearing up for this year’s festivities is the pageant’s Associate Director Melissa Martínez, who emphasized that this is more than a mere beauty contest. “It’s a cultural competition,” she said. There are several components: an introductory group dance; a talent segment; an evening wear competition (in which dresses are not allowed to be shorter than ankle-length); and a question and answer session. Most heavily weighted among those categories, explained Martínez, is the latter. During the question and answer session, contestants are asked about social issues, role models, and accomplishments, and are also asked questions on Puerto Rican history. On the water By Nilka Martell A s part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown. “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent. A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx. Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable. “I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.” Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.” May 17 kicks off canoe paddling season in the Bronx, and the Bronx River Alliance will host its annual Flotilla at Starlight Park this year. It is a fun-filled day for all with music, paddling events, bike clinics and much more. Experienced paddlers can help raise funds for free paddling programs by participating in the 5K Canoe Challenge – and registration is still available. The canoe relay race is the perfect opportunity for you to show off your skills, and help raise money for a good cause. Still, there are still plenty of Bronxites who do not realize that there is access to the Bronx River. 8 And who can blame them? For many years, the river was polluted, strewn with garbage, cars, tires and other industrial waste. The efforts of the Bronx River Alliance, and countless community organizations and volunteers, has allowed for the opportunity of experiencing the River like never before. Growing up in the Bronx, I would have never imagined the River being restored to its present-day condition, or the waterfront opportunities currently available. You haven’t really experienced the Bronx until you canoe in the only fresh water river in New York City. It truly is an amazing experience. I will admit, at first, I was afraid to canoe. Some parts of the River are very shallow, while others are very deep. My inability to swim made me fearful, until I was convinced to try it out. The Alliance is concerned with safety first, and no one is allowed in a canoe with proper equipment. A life jacket is required, and followed by a lesson on the use of the paddles. Once you get on the River, all fear is washed away. The picturesque views transport you somewhere far away, though you have not traveled out of the borough. Occasionally you will see an egret, a heron, turtles, fish, and if you’re really lucky, a beaver. This wildlife is a testament to the revitalization of the River. The Bronx River is now filled with access points, from Hunts Point Riverside all the way up to Shoe Lace Park. Most paddling is free, and there are even opportunities for groups and professional development. But don’t take my word for it, come on out and experience the Bronx River for yourself. If you prefer to just watch this time around, make your way to Starlight Park (near the Sheridan Expressway) on May 17 at 10 a.m. If you are interested in forming a team to help raise funds, please contact Saudy Tejada at 718.430.4602 or [email protected]. Yet. A new creative space, The Shoppe BX, is poised to give a boost to arts culture in the South Bronx. With the mission of building art appreciation in the surrounding area, as well as helping local artists, The Shoppe BX will feature a retail storefront to sell artist designs and a loft space for hosting public workshops. The Shoppe BX will also sponsor various projects throughout the year that give exposure to area artists. The first event — a pop-up coffee shop dubbed The Mix — will be open during the weekend of April 25-27 and showcase a project conceived by Vernicia Colon, a student at Parsons School for Design. That weekend will serve as the official launch for The Shoppe BX, which is the brainchild of artist Jamie Jones, a Bronx native with an expressed desire to improve her community. Jones said that her storefront will provide local designers with a retail space to sell their works, as she knows too many who can perform their craft only as a hobby, rather make a living out of it. “I want to see artists have the chance to make money,” she remarked. “It’s become a passion of mine.” Nine years ago, Jones started her own successful screen printing business on Lincoln Avenue, in the same space where The Shoppe BX now resides. Jones’ original store endured some hardships, as the roof collapsed after Hurricane Sandy, forcing the business to close for more than a year. “It was difficult at times to keep the faith, but I decided I wouldn’t allow it to bring me down,” said Jones. The store eventually reopened, and after Jones recruited fellow artist Edith Harper to assist with the creation of special programs, the space was revitalized and became The Shoppe BX. Jones said she is excited about a series of upcoming workshops she and Harper are planning. These classes, all conducted by local artists, will be held on a diverse range of subjects such as painting, screen printing, jewelry making and yoga. In the summertime, an outdoor market outside The Shoppe BX will provide artists with even more space to sell their goods. The Shoppe BX in Mott Haven is a new hub for artists and residents; the founders Jamie Jones and Edith Harper are in the back row. “Some don’t have any other dedicated space to market their creations, so it will be really beneficial to them,” said Jones. To help launch the creative space, Jones and Harper were selected to work with Harlem-based The Workshop in Business Opportunities (WIBO), a nonprofit organization committed to assisting entrepreneurial endeavors. As part of a four-month program, WIBO aligned The Shoppe BX with a mentor, Meaghan Kennedy of communications and design studio Orange Sparkle Ball. This past Sat., Apr. 12th, which proved a sun-splashed, warm day, offered a good incentive for over 200 residents who gathered at Franz Sigel Park, tucked behind the Bronx Supreme Court on the Grand Concourse. “You have the sun on your head, you feel like the breeze,” said Giovanni Chacon, a Lehman College student. But while others may have been out for a stroll or picnic at the Park, Chacon was working up a sweat. He spent the day mulching, digging up weeds and invasive plants, and aerating the soil. Chacon was there with a contingent of fellow Lehman College students, together with volunteers from the Bronx is Blooming, which runs beautifying programs throughout the borough. They were joined by volunteers Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, makers of Advil. Together, they all participated in the 20th Annual New York Cares Day Spring, sponsored by HSBC Bank. A Michelin recommendation is coveted by many restaurants, but bequeathed to a select few. But this past month, local eatery Marcha Cocina Bar, owned by four-man team Virgilio and Fredy de la Cruz, Marcelo Crespo and Jairo de la Paz, earned its first nod from Michelin. The announcement is displayed on a freestanding frame on the restaurant’s sleek bar. “A cool standout,” reads the review. “Fir for night owls and diners alike.” La Marcha’s ambience is colorful while retaining a modern sensibility. Natural light seeps through the large windows before sunset, while neon lights embedded into the bar illuminate the space as soon as it gets dark outside. “When people come here they’re like, ‘I’m in South Beach,’” said Crespo, an immigrant from Ecuador. Marcha Cocina Bar serves Nuevo Latino fare, and offers a generous selection of tapas in addition to a full menu. The de la Cruz brothers hail from the Dominican Republic, and Virgilio credits his mother as one of his main culinary inspirations. In fact, the restaurant’s yucca fries are served with a chimichurri sauce – a direct recommendation of the matriarch. While some associate Latin cuisine with heaping servings, the kitchen at La Marcha looks to distill the essences of the eclectic fare into more modestly portioned tapas that focus attention on the singular flavors. “We try to keep the flavor and style, but you can create small things. People can try a lot of dishes,” said Virgilio. “You can taste a lot of things and not feel full.” Among the many dishes receiving rave reviews was the cangrejo, or crab, coca. Cocas are a Spanish-inspired dish that resembles a sandwich/pizza hybrid. Crabmeat, goat cheese, manchego, cilantro, jalapeño and onion are served atop the flat bread made fresh in Marcha’s kitchen. The crab provides a solid silky base, upon which the manchego and goat cheeses provide savory and sweet undertones—and Marcha Cocina has drawn a dedicated following. 14 Marcha goes Michelin The coconut and pineapple mojito. “We treat everyone like V.I.P,” said La Marcha’s Marcelo Crespo (left) with Virgilio de la Cruz. The four owners have worked many years together at other restaurants downtown. In joining forces, they have put their considerable experience together and delegate operations among themselves. CABARET from p5 explained Hickey. “He found this 19th century schoolhouse and convinced Astor to purchase it.” Soon renamed the Lawrence F. Hickey Center for Child Development, the site was developed to meet the needs of three- to fiveyear-old children with emotional disorders. Often, the kids display an inability to learn or respond to structure, and have difficulty getting along with others. “These are children that have sometimes been thrown out of other programs,” said Hickey. “They’re trying to find where they belong.” Usually, the behavior of kids at the Hickey Center is related to emotional and developmental delays, as well as learning disabilities. Time spent at the facility helps them become better acclimated to the classroom. “There aren’t many programs like it for children that age,” commented Hickey. She said that funds raised from Come to the Cabaret provide much-needed assistance to keep the preschool going. Proceeds from a prior event fully financed a new roof; another year, new computers were purchased. Items up for bid at the silent auction include tickets to New York Yankees and New York Giants games and dinner with several of the performers, including Hickey, Tong and Anastos. “We have a great time doing it,” said Hickey of the event. “And it’s for a good cause.” The Come to the Cabaret show to benefit Lawrence F. Though several contributors said they knew nothing about poetry before getting involved with the project, Rivera said he always had a love for verse. “When I was growing up, my friends all liked to rap, but I used to hang out at poetry slams,” he remarked. Rivera said that the poetry workshops have allowed him to bond with his clients. “Hearing what they write gives you insight into who they are as a person - their struggles, accomplishments and disappointments,” he stated. We each represent our age group, but older women can represent more age groups because we’ve been through more.” Besides, the competition can help anyone find their inner majesty, she said. “There’s a princess in all of us,” she said. SPRING from p12 For Diedre Ayers, Senior Corporate Communications Manager for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, it was an opportunity to get to know a different part of the city. “I have been in New York City for up to ten years and I’ve never been to this park. Facing west, the skyline of Manhattan provided a sweeping panoramic vista. To the north, the gold-plated details on the Art Deco Bronx Supreme Court glinted in the sun, and Yankee Stadium was also visible. “You always find little treasures in New York you don’t know about,” she said. Jennifer Beaugrand, founder of the Bronx is Blooming, is already familiar with the park— and many others in the borough.
