Residents who have long sought to improve the county’s health statistics are finding new sources of support as wellness organizations forge innovative partnerships driven by the borough’s abundant needs. The Union Community Health Center (UCHC) recently celebrated National Health Center Week with a health and wellness event in which community members participated in various fitness activities, workshops, enjoyed music, and received free health services. The Health and Wellness ExpO+, hosted in conjunction with O+ Festival, the Bronx Community Health Network (BCHN), Urban Justice Center, the Fordham Road Business Improvement District (BID), and NYC Department of Transportation, was an opportunity to incentivize residents to take a more active role in their health. It also served as a spotlight to the ways in which art and creativity can work hand-in-hand when it comes to well-being. “The effort came from our collaboration with O+ Festival, which does art and medicine wellness events throughout the country, specifically in New York State,” said Luz Correa, UCHC’s Director of Government, Community and Media Relations, who added that this was a grassroots event with no corporate sponsorship. “[Medicine is] Health screenings were offered. For parents and families, that means figuring out transportation, shopping, and coordinating with new teachers and school officials on the year ahead. Needless to say, with the school year gearing up, it’s easy to get lost in busy schedules. As an AdvantageCare Physician in Washington Heights, I want to remind everyone to not forget about taking care of themselves this season. So, how can you join the millions of individuals around the country taking charge of their health care? Here are a few easy steps you can take right away. • Know Your Care Team: Ask your doctor who they work with when it comes to your care, and what are those individuals’ roles. For example, when you go for a regular checkup, do you see a nurse, too? How about your interactions with the front desk? Knowing the various players on your care team can help you understand the services available to you, and what your doctors need from you. • Find Out What They Do: For patients, each of your interactions with a doctor are often referred to as ‘touchpoints’, and serve a specific and important role in your care. It’s important you understand what those various ‘touch-points’ mean so that you are able to fully take advantage of opportunities to communicate the right information about your health, at the right time. • Set Goals: Work with your doctor to establish real goals for your overall health – in and out of their office. Goal setting, whether it’s exercise, diet, or even related to taking your prescribed medications, is a simple way to keep track of how effective certain actions are toward improving your health, and can help your doctor understand how to strengthen their care plan for you. • Communicate: Always remember to communicate with your doctor. Use your time in the doctor’s office to be open about how you really feel, what you think might be the cause, and how previous treatments have worked – or not worked – for you in the past. Health care is complicated, but improving your overall wellbeing doesn’t have to be. Be involved in your health care this back to school season and remember you can always call us at AdvantageCare Physicians to get started on a plan that works for you. ____________________ Dr. Navarra Rodriguez is the Interim President and Chief Medical Officer of AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY), one of metro New York’s largest multispecialty practices and a partner of EmblemHealth. To coincide with the centennial of women voting in New York State, Governor Andrew Cuomo has launched a committee responsible for promoting the watershed anniversary. The Women’s Suffrage 100th Anniversary Commemoration Commission will be responsible for planning a series of statewide programs that celebrate women’s suffrage in the state. A 14-member commission, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, will work to promote the anniversary of women’s suffrage between 2017 — a century after females won the right to vote in New York — and 2020, which marks a hundred years after the 19th Amendment was ratified, enabling women to vote nationwide. On Fri., Aug. 26, Hochul hosted a kickoff event for the commission at the Redbury in Manhattan, the former site of the historic Martha Washington Hotel, which once served as the headquarters of New York City’s Women’s Suffrage Council. Held on Women’s Equality Day, the event was attended by female elected officials and business leaders from across the city. Several of them sported wide-brimmed hats similar to those worn by outspoken women’s advocate and feminist Bella Abzug, who established the National Women’s Political Caucus with “We need [a woman’s] perspective in the corridors of power,” said Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul. Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem and fought to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. “This day continues to be a symbol of our fight for equal rights,” said Hochul. “I don’t like the phrase ‘women’s issues,’” she added. “Any man should want the same things for women that we want. Why not talk about the right to be equal instead?” At the Commission’s inaugural meeting, members discussed plans for events to take place over the next three The programs will celebrate the history of women’s suffrage in the state. years that would highlight historic achievements for women, said Hochul. She noted that New York played host to the first-ever Women’s Rights Convention, held in Seneca Falls in 1848. Hochul said the Commission would make symbolic visits to Seneca Falls, as well as to the Rochester home of Susan B. Anthony, who was once jailed for voting. Hochul also stressed the importance of increasing voter participation in New York, lamenting that the state ranks 46th in the nation in terms of registered voters. “I think that is one thing that this commission should embrace and take on, and try to fix it,” said Hochul. Public Advocate Letitia James spoke of how the political influence of U.S. females has changed drastically since pre-suffrage days, with a woman now on the verge of assuming the presidency. L ast week, Mayor de Blasio signed into law two bills that take important strides toward supporting both paid caregivers and unpaid family caregivers in an aging New York City. That’s great news, and it can’t come soon enough. Across the state, nearly 2.6 million unpaid family caregivers help make it possible for older adults and loved ones to live independently at home – and at a much lower cost to taxpayers than if they had to move to institutional care settings. As our population continues to rapidly age – and especially since the number of potential family caregivers can’t keep pace - we will need to make sure caregivers have the support they need. And that’s what New Yorkers want. An AARP-commissioned survey found eight of every 10 city voters 50 and older felt strongly that elected officials should make support for family caregivers a priority. Family caregivers help their older loved ones with medications and medical care, meals, bathing and dressing, chores and much more. And they do this all while often putting their own needs last, with many juggling full- or part-time jobs. The two new laws require the Department for the Aging (DFTA) to identify the needs of unpaid caregivers and develop a comprehensive plan to address those needs, and to establish a new Division of Paid Care L a semana pasada, el alcalde de Blasio convirtió en ley dos iniciativas que llevan avances importantes al apoyo tanto a cuidadores pagados y familiares no remunerados en una ciudad de Nueva York que envejece. ZIKA from p7 defects. Health officials reported just over a month ago that the first baby in New York City with microcephaly had been born, and though it is the only reported case thus far, there is a growing fear that the number of infected women will rise. Zika to ensure that we have healthy babies,” said Bassett. “I want to be very clear that you should not travel to a wedding, to a christening, to an anniversary or to a bachelorette party. None of those are good enough reasons to place your unborn and undeveloped baby at risk for birth defects.” Beyond pregnant women, the appeal to cease or delay travel was extended to couples and to male partners of women who are pregnant or who are seeking to be. Though the Zika virus is primarily transmitted through an infected mosquito, it can also be contracted sexually. To thwart the spread of the disease through sexual contact, anyone who travels while sexually active is advised to use contraceptives for six months in order to prevent transmitting the virus to their partner, or refrain from having sex altogether. “We have many patients who are young men and women that are sexually active and do not know the Zika virus can be transmitted sexually or that the effects for the unborn baby can be devastating,” said Dr. Tapia-Mendoza. “Our community is not immune to the Zika virus. So unless they have an emergency, [people] should not travel and they should always consult with their doctor.” Among those calling for greater awareness was Maria Lizardo, t he Executive Director of local non-profit agency Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC). ” [We need] to spread the word on the effects that the Zika virus has on pregnant women and those trying to conceive,” said Lizardo. “We have a responsibility to arm the community with the information they need in order to prevent birth defects.” Anyone experiencing Zika virus symptoms, which include fever, rash joint pain, conjunctivitis, should seek medical assistance and discuss if testing is necessary. SUFFRAGE from p5 “For all the young girls and women who dream, they can now dream to not only break through the glass ceiling, but touch the sky,” James remarked of Hillary Clinton’s White House run. James suggested that without the participation of women in the voting process, social issues such as poverty and child labor laws would not have been addressed in the same way. “Regardless of your political affiliation, together we divide stereotypes,” said James. “We approach things from a different perspective,” agreed Hochul. “We need that perspective in the corridors of power.” Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney praised Clinton as a trailblazer, but said women still faced inequality on many levels. “It took me 17 years to get a bill passed to help create a National Women’s History Museum in Washington,” she remarked. Maloney said that females in the workforce needed to be paid equally to men. “The wage gap becomes a huge problem over the course of a woman’s lifetime, with social security, pensions, savings all affected,” said Maloney. “A woman over 75 is twice as likely as a man to live in poverty.” Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer pointed out that Hispanic women make 55 cents on the dollar compared to white males, while African American women make 54 El evento fue celebrado en el antiguo sitio del histórico Hotel Martha Washington. “If you don’t have financial means, you’re not going to be able to raise your family,” said Brewer. Maloney stated that the only way to effectively close the wage gap is to pass an Equal Rights amendment to the Constitution. “Without it, women’s equality is not guaranteed under the law and will not be upheld in federal court,” she said. “It’s that simple.” “Es así de simple”. 21 COLLECTIVE from p3 we hope will be the foundation of innovative, lasting partnerships.” According to a national study conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, the Bronx has been deemed the unhealthiest out all of New York’s 62 counties for the seventh year in a row. In its Stork’s Nest program, expectant moms can participate in COLECTIVO de p3 a mano cuando se trata de bienestar. “Estamos enseñándole y mostrándole a la gente cómo hacer el agua naturalmente más deliciosa y SEPTEMBER 07, 2016 • THE BRONX FREE PRESS • www.thebronxfreepress.com a series of prenatal classes and learn how to apply for WIC benefits. Organizers agree that moving up from its current ranking as the state’s least healthy county has presented an ongoing challenge. But they insist that continuing to create greater access to healthier options and building on partnerships, will yield real dividends. SPOT from p13 children built a colorful, public, imaginative garden – right in the middle of the Mitchel Houses grounds – with murals, music, pottery, collage, sculpture and water play over a fiveweek period. “Summer can be a challenging time for caregivers and their very young children who may not have easy access to arts enrichment in their neighborhoods,” said Speaker MarkViverito in a statement. “Programs like ARTSPOT fill a clear educational and cultural void especially in low-income neighborhoods like Mott Haven and public housing communities like Mitchel Houses.” The activities on Saturday included building a teepee and discussing the natural resources Native Americans would have used to build shelter. After painting the teepee students sat inside and read a storybook about the Lenape tribe. Additionally, children began drumming and marching around the teepee to imagine the life of Native Americans. Supporting activities included animal pinch pots, dream catchers, nature crowns, Orchard Beach songwriting, mural painting, drumming, and water sports. Smiles for miles. To celebrate the end of the program, sixty photos of residents from the ARTSPOT program were hung around the community, and families were encouraged to take photos home. Remaining photos will be hung within the Mitchel management building for the community. Museum representatives received a plaque from the Tenants Association office expressing their support and appreciation.
