U
nder the Affordable Health
Care Act, the Bronx Puerto
Rican Day Parade is officially now
all grown up.
At 27 years old, the parade, like many of
its millennial peers, would need to seek out
coverage independent from its parents.
But, luckily for Bronx residents for whom
the parade is an annual tradition, it is all
covered.
Affinity Health Plan has been the sponsor of
the parade since its inception, and continued
the tradition this year, serving as one of its
primary sponsors, together with the LaSorsa
Auto Group.
Billed as one of the largest cultural events
in the Bronx, the parade is dedicated to the
celebration of Puerto Rican culture and people,
and typically features over 100 organizations.
While many hail from the borough, there are
also groups from other counties throughout
the city and state, and some directly from
Puerto Rico.
This past Thurs., May 29th, the press
conference announcing the parade’s royal
court members and its honorees was held
at the health plan’s headquarters on Halsey
Street.

“People put a lot of emphasis into creating
those floats,” she noted. “It really is a great
spectacle to watch.”
Udochi has also enjoyed seeing how the
parade has evolved over time.
“It’s honoring Puerto Rican culture, but it’s
recognizing the contribution of other cultures
to become more inclusive,” she said.
“It’s become much more diverse,” agreed

A los 27 años, el Desfile, al igual que muchos
de sus pares milenarios, tendría que buscar una
cobertura independiente de sus padres.
Pero, por suerte para los residentes del Bronx
para quienes el desfile es una tradición anual,
todo está cubierto.
Affinity Health Plan ha sido el patrocinador del
Desfile desde su inicio y continuará la tradición
este año, sirviendo como uno de sus principales
patrocinadores, junto con Lasorsa Auto Group.
Catalogado como uno de los mayores
eventos culturales en el Bronx, el Desfile está

El pasado jueves 29 de mayo se llevó a cabo
una conferencia de prensa en la sede del plan
de salud en la calle Halsey para anunciar a los
miembros de la corte real del Desfile y a los
homenajeados.

L
ane sat in the classroom
among over a dozen middle
school students at MS 325, the
Urban Science Academy, at 1000
Teller Avenue this past Fri., May
31st. Lane was, by far, the worst
behaved member of the group
interrupting the guest speaker,
rolling on the floor, nibbling on Ms.
Venise Hazel’s limbs.
And barking.
“He’s my new project,” explained guest
speaker David Turner, a bomb detonator for
the New York State Troopers.
Turner’s usual sidekick, LT, a German
shepherd who is trained to sniff out bombs,
was also present.
But Lane is a four-month-old Belgian
Malinois puppy. Turner is responsible for
training both dogs, who live with him and his
family.
“I’ve only heard of Belgian waffles!”
exclaimed one student who had never heard
of this dog breed.
But Lane’s breed was just one of the things
that students would learn about during the
Urban ScienceAcademy/MS 325’s Career Day.
This is the school’s second career day.
Principal Patrick Kelly is committed to
making it an annual event, organized by
teachers who invite their friends and family to
talk about their careers.
“One of our responsibilities is to give our
students exposure to the broader world,”

dog, which entails the regular use of a red ball
covered in dog slobber, detailing engagements
with the president, and traveling over 4,000
miles in one week.
Since LT is due to retire soon, and will soon
spend his days lounging around the Turner
household and yard, it is Lane who will
eventually become Turner’s partner
once he gets bigger and stops chewing
on everything.
LT was trained to associate bombs
with his favorite red ball. When
detecting one, he is rewarded with the
red ball. When he finds a bomb, he is
commanded to sit so as not to inflict
damage to himself.
It was teacher Hazel who invited
Turner to class. He is married to her
cousin. She thought he’d provide
students an alternative view of law
enforcement. While Turner has a gun
and works with a potentially lethal
animal, his job on the bomb squad
has never ended in violence.
“I know that my students would
be interested in the fact that there’s
a live prop. But [some] also have a
negative idea of law enforcement,”
said Hazel.
And Turner’s visit was revelatory
for students only familiar with police
officers and firemen.
“They get new exposure,”
she remarked. “Many didn’t
know what a state trooper was.”
Dynasty Cook, 12, enjoyed learning about
working on a bomb squad—but also learned
that she doesn’t want to be on one.

Una franquicia basada en el Bronx de 12
tiendas de reparación electrónica fundada hace
casi dos décadas, empezó como una tienda de
beepers en la calle 149 y la Tercera Avenida.
1800Fix.com es la creación de Tony Brea y sus
hermanos menores Luis y Abel.
Auto descrito como geek, Tony Brea fue
operador de radio teletipo en el ejército en 1982.
Después de dejar el servicio, sabía que quería
ser su propio jefe.
“Yo sabía que no quería trabajar para nadie,
porque no puedo tomar pedidos”, explicó. “Tengo
muchas ideas. No puedes ser un ejército de
uno y tener un montón de ideas de diferentes
personas”.
Hace dieciocho años, decidió combinar su
obsesión por las nuevas tecnologías con una
habilidad práctica para arreglar las cosas.
Escuchar a Brea describir su afecto por los
beepers de entonces, rivaliza el apego que ahora
muchos sienten por sus teléfonos inteligentes.
“Fue algo nuevo”, dijo Brea. “Era algo que
debías mostrar a tus amigos. Demostraba
estatus, poder, hasta cierto punto, y a la gente le
encantaba. El primero que tuve fue el BPR2000.

feliz, ella estaba feliz”, comentó Brea. “Ella ahorró
un poco de dinero, nosotros recibimos un poco
de dinero y mantuvimos el teléfono fuera del
basurero un poco más de tiempo”.
Según un informe de 2010 sobre los residuos
electrónicos de la Agencia de Protección
Ambiental, 2.4 millones de toneladas de
desechos electrónicos se eliminaron ese año.
Eso es 142,000 computadoras y 416,000
dispositivos móviles todos los días.
Además, grandes cantidades de recursos
se extraen de la tierra para fabricar piezas
electrónicas. Por ejemplo, más de 70 libras de
agua se utilizan para hacer un sólo chip que
pesa menos de una onza, y entre 500 y 1,000
diferentes productos químicos se utilizan para
producir una tarjeta de circuitos, de acuerdo con
el Consejo de Defensa de Recursos Naturales
(NRDC por sus siglas en inglés). Según el
NRDC, toma más de 500 libras de combustibles
fósiles, casi 50 kilos de productos químicos y 1.5
toneladas de agua fabricar una computadora de
escritorio.
Al otro lado del río Hudson, en Menlo Park,
Nueva Jersey, Thomas Edison creó el primer foco
incandescente. Algunos de su época estaban tan
bien elaborados que todavía están encendidos
en la actualidad. Una bombilla de luz en una
estación de bomberos en Livermore, California
tiene el récord en Estados Unidos, pues ha
estado encendida durante más de un siglo.
“Las empresas no quieren eso”, dijo Brea.
“Ellas piensan: espera un segundo, no podemos
vender un foco que nunca se funde”.
En lugar de ello, los fabricantes crearon la
obsolescencia planificada, la repetición actual
que se ve en la actualización constante de
los teléfonos inteligentes y las tabletas. La
obsolescencia planificada significa que lo que es
nuevo hoy es viejo mañana, y generalmente es
enterrado en un basurero al norte del estado.
Brea es muy consciente de que esto es un
problema.

YOUR CHILD’S PRE-K SEAT

Como se anunció el martes 3 de junio, la ciudad está lanzando un proceso de
solicitud en línea para ayudar a los padres a encontrar y solicitar lugares de
pre-K en los centros de alta calidad basados en la comunidad para la niñez

As announced on Tues., Jun. 3rd, the City is launching an online application process
to help parents find and apply for high-quality Community-Based Early Childhood
Centers (CBECCs) pre-K seats in their neighborhood. Even more programs and seats
will be made available in the weeks ahead.
“If you’ve ever had a child attend our public schools, then you know well the stress
of navigating all the programs to find the right fit. What we want every parent to
know is that come September, there will be more options than ever for high-quality,
full-day pre-K across the five boroughs. Whether your child is accepted to a public
school program this week or not, there are more options—both at community
facilities and at other public schools—to find the right fit,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

will have until June 20th to register their child at a school to which they were
accepted.

• Applications at CBECCs are open now and parents are encouraged to apply,
even if they have also applied to public school programs. The Department of
Education urges families to apply by June 26th to have the best chance of
finding the right program. Admissions remain open through October 1st.
• Additional seats at district schools, CBECCs, charter schools and parochial
institutions will be made available in the weeks ahead. The Department of
Education will notify parents about newly available seats in time to apply.

Service Advisory for 116th Street Festival and
Puerto Rican Day Parade
The weekend-long celebration of Puerto Rican heritage begins on Saturday, June 7 with the
116th Street Abrazo Fraternal Festival which will be held from noon to 7 p.m. along 116th
Street between Lexington and 2nd Avenues and on 3rd Avenue between 106th and 122nd
Streets. The 116th Street Festival is a very popular attraction with up to 50,000 people in
attendance at any one time. Overall attendance for the day could reach upwards of 100,000.
On Saturday, the 116 St 6 station will be “exit only” from noon to 5 p.m. Customers wishing
to enter at 116 St will be redirected to nearby 6 line stations on Lexington Avenue at 110 St
and 125 St. The following New York City Transit and MTA Buses that serve the area will be
affected by reroutes: M15, SBS-M15, M101, M102, M103, M116, BxM6, BxM7, BxM8,
BxM9 and BxM10.
This year’s National Puerto Rican Day Parade will be held on Sunday, June 8 between 11
a.m. and 6 p.m. The parade route runs up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street. In
order to prevent overcrowding on stairways and platforms, the 77 St 6 station will be “exit
only” from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Customers seeking up or downtown service from this station will
be directed to the 6 line 68 St or 86 St stations. Parade-goers may use Fifth Avenue stations
on the EFNR and 7 lines. Additionally, NYC Transit will increase subway service on the
2456 and S (42nd Street shuttle) trains to accommodate spectators.
The following NYC Transit MTA Buses will take customers to the parade area although
affected by reroutes: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M31, M50, M57, M66, M72, M79, Q32, BxM2,
BxM3, BxM4, BxM6, BxM7, BxM8, BxM9, BxM10, BxM11, QM2, QM4, QM5, QM6, X1,
X10 and X17.

trenes metro en 2,4,5,6 y S (shuttle de la calle 42) para dar cabida a los espectadores.

beverages brought onto the property.

and people in our borough,
we turn to Nilka Martell,
who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
During this journey of discovering the
Bronx, I’ve had the opportunity of meeting
some amazing people.
Among
them
is
16-yearold spoken word poet Nene Ali.
Our first encounter was of an artistic nature.
Little did I know she was a dedicated boxer
in training.
Earlier
this
year,
I
had
the
opportunity to photograph her in action.
Last month, Nene Ali participated in her first
match. At three rounds, her opponent opted
to end the fight.
And this coming Sat., Jun. 7th, Ali will
again be facing the same opponent, and this
time, they will be “Fighting for a Purpose.”
The young, socially conscious Bronxite
is supporting two important causes, one
domestic and one international. The first is
to prevent the closure of John’s Gym in the
Bronx; the second is to construct three wells
in Kenya.
John’s Gym has served local youths for
decades. Until 2012, the athletic facility
was located on Westchester Avenue, but the
land was sold by the city to a developer. The
gym later was relocated to East 149th Street,
near Third Avenue. The gym now faces
increasing rents in a section of the Bronx
that is being redeveloped and gentrified.
A portion of the fight’s proceeds will go
towards keeping the gym open and for the
purchase of new equipment.
“It would be an atrocity,” says Ali about
the potential closure of John’s Gym. “If you
look at that area of the Bronx, you have to
question, ‘Who are they building it up for?’
Do you know what was built in that area for
us [my peers]? A juvenile detention center.
If that gym’s doors close, it’s another
door America closed on her own future.”
The other portion of the proceeds will go to
the construction of three wells in Kenya.
Ali explains, “Water is so hard to come
by [there]. It’s unimaginable to me to hear
someone is dying right now for a glass of
water. Each well costs $11,000, so I need to
raise $33,000.”
Ali has been a boxing fan since age 4, finding
inspiration from retired American female
boxer Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali.
The young woman struggled with weight
through her adolescence; at one point, her
doctor informed her and her dad that if she
didn’t lose weight, she’d be a candidate for
juvenile diabetes.
In part because of that dire warning,
and because of First Lady Michelle
Obama’s “Get Active” initiative which
seeks to motivate children to get moving
and ward off obesity, Ali started training.
It has been over four years now since she
lost 60 lbs.
She is no longer a candidate for diabetes.
The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the first
match begins at 7:30 p.m. at John’s Gym,
located at 450 East 149th Street.
The suggested donation is $15.

su oponente optó por poner fin al

El próximo sábado 7 de junio, Ali

La joven con conciencia social
oriunda del Bronx, está apoyando dos
causas importantes: una nacional y la
otra internacional. La primera es para
evitar el cierre de John´s Gym en el
Bronx, la segunda es la construcción

John’s Gym ha servido a jóvenes
de la localidad por décadas. Hasta
2012, la instalación deportiva estaba
ubicada en la avenida Westchester,
pero el terreno fue vendido por
la ciudad a un desarrollador. El
gimnasio después fue reubicado en
la calle 149 este, cerca de la Tercera
Avenida. El gimnasio enfrenta ahora
crecientes rentas en una sección del
Bronx que está siendo remodelada y
aburguesada. Parte de las ganancias
de la pelea se destinarán a mantener
el gimnasio abierto y para comprar nuevos
equipos.
“Sería una atrocidad”, dice Ali sobre el posible

Congressional Debate on BronxTalk
Congressman Charles Rangel, New York State Senator
Adriano Espaillat, and Reverend Michael Walrond will
participate in a one-hour debate on BronxTalk.
The debate will be pre-recorded on Friday, June 13 at 12:00
p.m. and broadcasted on BronxTalk on Monday,
June 16 at 9:00 p.m.
Espaillat and Walrond are looking to unseat Rangel, who is
currently seeking a 23rd term in Congress, representing the
Bronx and northern Manhattan. Roughly 20 percent of the
redistricted congressional district now lies in the Bronx.
BronxTalk host Gary Axelbank, who has hosted various
debates on BronxTalk since its inception almost 20 years ago,
will serve as the moderator. To watch the debate, tune in on BronxNet’s channel 67
and Fios’s channel 33 on Mon., June 16th, at 9:00pm. The

This past Mon., June 2nd, New York City
FC (NYCFC) announced that the team, New
York’s Major League Soccer franchise, had
signed its first player, Spanish superstar and
World Cup winning forward David Villa.
The announcement was made by NYCFC
Chief Business Operator Tim Pernetti,
Scouting Director Claudio Reyna and Head
Coach Jason Kreis.
“This is a historic and exciting moment
for the City family and the building of New
York City Football Club,” said NYCFC CEO
Ferran Soriano. “I’m sure New Yorkers will
enjoy watching him play for their city.”
Fresh off winning the “La Liga” title in his
native Spain, Villa served this past season as
a heralded forward for Atletico Madrid.
Having played for Valencia and
Barcelona in addition to Atletico
Madrid, Villa has amassed two
“La Liga” titles, the UEFA
Champions League trophy, and
a prestigious World Cup win for
his native Spain in 2011.
Villa is also the first Spanish
player to score more than 50
international goals in one season.

Talent show brings youths into spotlight

The 2014 Bronx Youth
Talent Show‬ featured two
dozen finalists showing off
their vocal and dance skills.
he walls were shaking.
As a series of performers took turns
singing and dancing onstage at the Lovinger
Theatre on the campus of Lehman College in
the Bronx, this past Sat., May 31st, the theater
rocked with thunderous music – and waves of
applause.
But those displaying their talents at Lehman
that day were not collegiate theater majors,
but youthful performers ages nine through
14, who were participating in the 2014 Bronx
Youth Talent Show, otherwise known as the
“Battle of the Bronx”.
Open to public and performing arts schools
in the Bronx, the show featured two dozen
finalists showing off their vocal and dance
skills and competing for the grand prize of
$1,000 for their school.
The Bronx Youth Talent Show, now in its
second year, is a joint venture between not-forprofit managed care organization Healthfirst
and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, and is
designed to support the arts at local schools.
According to Healthfirst Enrollment
Manager Franklin Medrano, all contestants
were nominated by their school, with an
initial registration pool of several hundred
performers.

Medrano said that in addition to singers
and dancers, next year’s talent show will also
include children who perform with musical
instruments.
For the 2014 show, participants competed in
two categories: group dancing and individual
singing. The Lehman theater was packed with an
overflow crowd that roared with approval
after each performance, whether it was an
energetic dance routine or a youngster belting
out their favorite popular song.
Gary Rosario, Director of Business
Development for Bronx-Lebanon, praised the
contestants for their hard work.
“You’re all winners here today,” he told
them.
“Each and every contestant has learned a lot
about confidence, teamwork and discipline,”
said George Hulse, Vice President of External
Affairs at Healthfirst.
“The talent here also emphasizes the
importance of keeping arts in our schools.”
A panel of judges selected a total of six
winners, who took away cash prizes in
addition to an award certificate and trophy.

Pero aquellos mostrando su talento en Lehman
ese día no eran estudiantes universitarios de

nueve y catorce años, que participaban en el
concurso de talento juvenil del Bronx 2014.
Abierto a escuelas públicas de arte y escénicas
en el Bronx, el concurso presentó dos docenas
de finalistas, quienes mostraron sus habilidades
vocales y de baile y compitieron por el gran
premio de $1,000 dólares para su escuela.

I
n 2010, when Benlly Polanco
decided to open up Corcho
Wine Room on the Dyckman strip,
he was unsure of what would
come of it.
For one, the idea of starting an
establishment dedicated primarily to wine
seemed a risk.
The fact that his new business would be,
in fact, neatly tucked inside a strip more
known for its liquor bottle service rather
than for popping corks on fine vintage wine,
was another concern.
“But it worked,” said Polanco. “The
neighborhood reacted differently and
decided that they wanted to try something
new.”
Corcho, the Spanish word for cork,
reflects what Polanco believes to be a
change for uptown.
He first came up with the idea of opening
up Corcho while working at his parents’
liquor and spirits store. As he waited on
the clientele, he noted that the requests
were changing. The store’s inventory soon
reflected a larger selection of wine, which
grew day by day to satisfy demand.
“I had to jump on the trend. I liked where
it was going,” said Polanco. “Opening up a
wine room was exciting.”
Located on 227 Dyckman Street, Corcho
makes ample use of its intimate space. The
small room is warmly lit, and is touched with
earth-tone colors. The tables are set close

to each other, encouraging easy interaction
among the wine-lovers who frequent the
space. “It is almost always the case that people
who come in here as complete strangers, after
[just an] hour, are seen laughing and enjoying
each other’s company,” reports Polanco.
At any point in time, Corcho serves up to
45 different wines, with an ever-changing
stock that seeks to pique and maintain
patrons’ interests. Polanco and his team want
to help spark curiosity and expand the breadth
of knowledge of novices and connoisseurs
alike. To that end, regions that may not be
readily associated with wine are featured
prominently. While you can certainly expect
your favorite Italian, French and Spanish
varietals, there are glasses aplenty from South
Africa, Israel and Germany as well.
Bob’s South African Chenin Blanc, for
example, is currently being served. Hailing
from the Western Cape region, the wine is a
crisp and dry white that will satisfy your thirst
while offering a hint of sweet honeysuckle
and white peach.
Come a sultry summer evening, this will
be a perfect glass to savor.
In addition to its deep cellars, Corcho
serves an array of dishes that include
charcuterie and cheese boards, tapas, salads
and even a hearty parrillada board composed
of grilled meats.
Staff is on hand to make helpful
suggestions, and Corcho also offers frequent
wine tasting and food pairing classes.
There are also regular Latin jazz and
conga nights with live musicians, while
work from local artists and artisans lines the
walls.
It is all part of Corcho’s intoxicating
allure: to draw you in for a mere sniff, a
swirl, and a sip. You’ll stay for a bit – and
then depart, begrudgingly, but enchanted.
“Wine is a magical thing,” explains
Polanco. “It is the drink of the soul. It is
something to get excited about.”

Foundation, and Montefiore Health
System launched the Center for
a Healthy Childhood (CHC) at
Montefiore’s Community Health
Fair this past Sun., Jun. 1st.
The new initiative between the López
Family Foundation and Montefiore aims to
promote healthy living through community
health programming, positive messages to
raise children’s self-image and a healthy
environment so every woman, child and
family can achieve their full potential.
During the surprise
visit, the López Family
Foundation made a
$250,000 donation to
Montefiore. The fair,
a concept brought to Montefiore by Jennifer
and Lynda, was held on Montefiore’s Moses
Campus.
“We are proud to partner with Jennifer,
Lynda and the entire López Family
Foundation to make a positive impact on the
lives and futures of families in the Bronx,”
said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., President and
CEO, Montefiore. “Montefiore’s work with
the López Family Foundation will begin by
improving vital education, understanding and
access to healthy eating and exercise. It is
only through partnerships like this that we can
ensure every child has a healthy and nurturing
childhood to achieve their full potential. ”
Jennifer, Lynda and many of their friends
and family attended the Community Health
Fair to participate in activities, including a
Zumba class featuring participants in B’N
Fit, a program affiliated with the Center for
a Healthy Childhood that helps teenagers
maintain or lose weight. They also assisted
in a healthy cooking demonstration, making
smoothies for those at the fair.
“We can do so much to make the Bronx, our
hometown, a healthier place. We can exercise
together and we can eat well together. The
Center for a Healthy Childhood will help
make our vision a reality on every block,”
said Jennifer López. “It feels good to come
home and talk to moms and kids about making
healthy lifestyle decisions – they can make
changes now that will set them on a path for a
long, happy life.”
The Center builds upon Montefiore’s
comprehensive community health programs
and the long-standing commitment of Jennifer
and Lynda to improving the health and wellbeing of women and
children.
“We love having
the opportunity to
offer resources that
mothers, children and families in
the Bronx need for better access to healthcare,
health information and health education,” said
Lynda López. “The López Family Foundation
is passionate about the health and well-being
of mothers and children, and we’re excited the

de servicio en más de dos docenas de
organismos comunitarios en Nueva York,

día anual de servicio comunitario de
Berkeley College, celebrado viernes 16
de mayo.

Bellve parece disfrutar cuando presiona los
límites de su obsesión.
En 2000, fue paciente durante la noche en un
hospital como consecuencia de un ataque de
asma, pero incluso su lucha contra la enfermedad
no lo pudo contener.

resto de su equipo- a su habitación para pasar el
tiempo.
No terminó bien.
“Los guardias de seguridad me echaron”,
recordó Bellve.
Albert Moreno también está obsesionado con
arreglar las cosas. Recordó cuando su padre,
quien maneja un conjunto de clínicas en Puerto
Rico, abrió una computadora ante sus propios

ane se sentó en el aula entre más
de una docena de estudiantes de
secundaria en la MS 325, la Academia
Urban Science, en el número 1000 de la
avenida Teller, el pasado viernes 31 de
mayo.
Lane fue, por mucho, el miembro del grupo
que peor se comportó, interrumpiendo al orador
invitado, rodando por el suelo y mordisqueando
las extremidades de la señorita Venise Hazel.
Y ladrando.
“Él es mi nuevo proyecto”, explicó el orador
invitado David Turner, un detonador de bombas
de los policías del estado de Nueva York.
El compañero habitual de Turner, LT, un pastor
alemán que está entrenado para olfatear bombas,
también estuvo presente.
Pero Lane es un cachorro malinois belga de
cuatro meses de edad. Turner es responsable del
entrenamiento de ambos perros, que viven con él
y su familia.
“¡Yo sólo he oído hablar de wafles belgas!”,

Meanwhile, down the hall in Katherine
Fischer’s room, Ryan Book, who works for the
online magazine MusicTimes.com, and who is
also Fischer’s fiancée, spoke to students about
his experience as a music journalist.
Fischer thought her fiancée would have
offer a new perspective for her students, some
of whom have hopes of being artists or sport
stars.
“A lot of the kids are really interested in
music and writing, and may not know about
outlets that allow them to intersect what they
love,” she said.
Book agreed.
“Not everyone can play for the Yankees,
but you can write about the Yankees,” he said.
While some of the students may be obsessed
with athletes or movie stars, Book has always
been obsessed with music.
He told them a few of the perks of being a
music journalist.
“There’s nothing like meeting your idol
face to face,” he said, though he noted that
the hours can be long.
Book has golfed with Kendrick Lamar,
braved an interview with the Insane Clown
Posse, and counts Jay-Z among his Twitter
followers.
Book also gave them important advice in
any pursuit. Though Book went to Columbia
School of Journalism to get his Masters in
Journalism, he insisted that doing the work,
as with an internship, counts as well.
“People care [about] what your experience
is,” he said, urging the students to work
hard, whatever their chosen field.
Joel Polanco, an eighth grader who said
he was thinking of being a basketball player
or a dentist, wasn’t quite sure about what he
wanted to, said he found Career Day helpful.
“They tell you about real life and how jobs
work and that’s stuff you need to know,” he
said. “It’s a reminder that you need to find a
job that you like.”

Turner instructed the students not to stare
at him in the eyes, as that is considered a
challenge in the canine world. Though he is
completely obedient to Turner, LT—whom
the students dubbed line tackler for his size—
thinks he’s the head honcho and does not take
well to challenges.
“He’s very sure of himself,” said Taylor. “He
thinks he’s the biggest, baddest guy in the room.”
“Well, he is!” quipped one student.
While walking down the halls, both LT and
Lane compelled students to flock around to
take a better look at the four-legged creatures
roaming the school. No sooner had they come
near, thought, that they’d quickly retreat
with a quick yip from little Lane. The duo
prompted squeals of delight and of shock—
especially when LT stuck his nose into the
bathroom, eliciting screams from the other

Latin singing group Aventura, as well as
Bachata star Romeo Santos.
“The talent on display here was amazing,”
said Brackett. “It shows we have some hidden
gems here in the Bronx.”
Brackett, who grew up in the Soundview
area, remarked that the contestants were much
younger than he was when he got involved
with music.
“To be performing at this age can only be
a blessing,” said Brackett. “It will give them
confidence to do great things.”
Marines received a special award from the
New York Police Department’s 40th Precinct
in the South Bronx, to acknowledge his work
with assisting New York City youth through
giveaways of school supplies and food.
“We need to see young people who are
successful return to their community and give
back,” said Marines.

($700) and Bronze ($500) cash prizes, while
individual singing winners took home prize

As the winners were called, the children
raced back onto the stage with beaming smiles
to claim their prize and pose for photos.
Pujols, a sixth grader at MS 331, said he
was “shocked” to claim first prize in the
individual singing category.
“When I saw how talented the others were,
I was surprised to win,” he said.
Though his dream is to become a
professional singer, and he has taken music
classes, Pujols said the Lehman event was by
far the largest audience he had performed in
front of.
“This was a big crowd,” he remarked.
Pujols vowed to continue practicing hard
— and find the perfect place to display his
prize trophy.
“I’ll put it in the safest place in my house,”
he joked.
