Did you know?
Did you know that ordinary time begins the Monday after the
Sunday after the Epiphany, which is often the Baptism of the
Lord, and continues till Ash Wednesday, then begins again the
Monday after Pentecost Sunday and continues till the first
Sunday of Advent? In other words, all the time that is not
Advent, Christmas, Lent/Triduum or Easter is Ordinary Time.
Ordinary time is not named “ordinary” because we are not in a
time of penance, or of great celebration, but rather in a dull and
boring time. The word “ordinary” in this case refers to ordinal
numbers. Ordinal numbers tell us about the order of things,
first, second third, etc… Ordinary time is the way we measure
and order our worship in the Church. The Sundays are ordered
and Scriptures are assigned to each Sunday and weekday.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Every year from January 18 – 25 all Christians are invited to
pray in communion with the prayer of Jesus. (Jn 17:21) “That
all may be one.
This year on Jan. 19 at 3:00 p.m. there will be an ecumenical
service for Christian Unity at St Nicholas Byzantine Catholic
Church on 2711 W. 40th St., Lorain. All are invited.
Sunday, January 20, an ecumenical prayer service will be held
at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church 603 Washington
Ave., Lorain. at 3:00 p.m. Fr. Bill Thaden will be the speaker.

Cada año entre el 18 -25 de enero los cristianos
estamos invitados para orar en comunión con la oración
de Jesús. (Jn 17:21), “Que todas sean uno.”
Este año un servicio de oración será en la Iglesia de St
Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th St., Lorain,
el domingo, el 19 de enero, a las 3:00 p.m. Todos están

¿Sabías que el Tiempo Ordinario comienza el lunes después del
domingo después de la Epifanía, que es a menudo el bautismo
del Señor y continúa hasta el Miércoles de Ceniza, y luego
comienza de nuevo el lunes después del domingo de
Pentecostés y continúa hasta el primer domingo de Adviento?
En otras palabras, todo el tiempo que no es Adviento, Navidad,
Cuaresma, Triduo o Pascua es Tiempo Ordinario.
Al Tiempo Ordinario no se le llama "normal" porque no
estamos en un tiempo de penitencia, o de gran celebración,
sino en un momento común y corriente. La palabra "normal"
en este caso se refiere a los números ordinales. Estos números
ordinales nos hablan acerca del orden de las cosas, en primer
lugar, segundo, tercero, etc.... Tiempo Ordinario es la forma de
medir y ordenar nuestra adoración en la Iglesia. Los domingos
se ordenan y las Escrituras se asignan a cada domingo y a cada
día de la semana.

We are currently looking to form a retreat team for the
Confirmation Retreat that will be in February. Anyone
interested, please pick up an application in the plaza or office.
The team will be chosen through a discernment process.
Art Challenge ~ Artistic Expressions of the Mystery of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus
In an effort to fill the now vacant circular medallion on the front of
our church with a new work of art Sacred Heart Chapel and The
Lorain Arts Council are very pleased to present a unique collaboration between the Church and the Arts with the Sacred Heart Art
Challenge to be held during the Fiestas Patronales, July 11-13, 2014.
The invitation is open to all parishioners, friends of Sacred Heart
Chapel and any artists who may wish to participate. The Art
Challenge will be a juried show and also have a People’s Choice
Award. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize and the winning
art work may be used to adorn the facade of Sacred Heart Chapel.
After the fiesta weekend the artwork will be exhibited in a special
presentation at The Lorain Arts Council.
All are welcome to create an original work of art depicting The
Sacred Heart of Jesus which represents the devotion of the Church
to Christ in his free and total love for humanity. His is a compassionate heart ready to receive every person who seeks Him and
which suffers for those who do not. See our website for details or

Desafío de Arte ~ Expresiones Artísticas del Misterio del
Sagrado Corazón de Jesús
Nos gustaría ahora, que el espacio vacante del medallón circular al
frente de nuestra iglesia sea una nueva obra de arte. Esta es la
inspiración para el Desafío de Arte del Sagrado Corazón en
colaboración con el Consejo de Artes de Lorain. Todos los
feligreses, amigos del Sagrado Corazón y cualquier otro artista
están invitados a presentar sus originales obras de arte. No hay
restricciones de edad. Todas las muestras serán puestas a
consideración por un Comité de Selección independiente compuesto por artistas locales y líderes comunitarios, así como por
todos los asistentes a las Fiestas Patronales del 11 al 13 de julio del
2014. El diseño ganador será considerado para su reproducción y
montaje en la parte frontal de la Iglesia además recibirá un premio
de $500. Posteriormente todas las obras se pondrán en exhibición

Hope Workshop
“HOPE” a workshop for the separated and divorced is a five
part workshop that helps participants identify and work
through the pain over the loss of a relationship through
separation or divorce.
HOPE will meet on five Monday evenings
February 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and March 3rd
from 7-9pm in the St. Joseph School Library

2014 First Step Program
Attempting to pick up the pieces of one’s life after the tragedy
of divorce is complex and demanding. One of the significant
issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the
Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I
allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can
the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I
have to do? The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland is
continuing to offer its very successful First Step Program in
order to help individuals deal with these questions. The
Church’s teachings on marriage, divorce, and remarriage are
often misunderstood. This program is offered to help everyone,
especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more
about Catholic teaching in these areas.
In any endeavor, taking the “first step” is always the most
difficult. The First Step Program helps individuals to navigate
the path of healing and closure, of which the annulment
process is an important aspect.

Seeds of Literacy
Seeds of Literacy, a nonprofit organization offering free, one to
one tutoring in adult basic education and GED preparation,
has an urgent need for tutors. Volunteer tutors work
individually with students on reading, writing, and math
skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students
develop confidence and positive attitudes about learning.
