THE LORD’S FLOCK
Sheep are highmaintenance animals.
They are not very intelligent. Without guidance
and care, especially in a
climate like Israel’s,
they would die quickly
from predators, starvation, or just their own
slowness. The scriptural image of us as the Lord’s flock
is not terribly flattering to us, since it is only the never
-ending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows
the flock to survive.
The feast of Christ the King was intended to call
the world back to Christ as the sole power of the
world, to bring back a flock that had been scattered
by many negative forces of the growing industrial, scientific, and war‑torn world of the early twentieth century. It is fitting that, as we celebrate Christ the King,
we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us
and who, likewise, will be there at the end of time. Interestingly enough, as the Gospel illustrates, our own
destiny is determined by the way we have been
“shepherds” to the rest of the flock.

Mientras celebramos a

MOST REVEREND CARL ANTHONY FISHER, S.S.J. (19451993), AUXILIARY BISHOP OF LOS ANGELES, SAN PEDRO
REGION
NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL BLACK
CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH
and it is timely that we remember our
own Bishop Carl Fisher so close to his
birthday, 24 November 1945. When
Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles on 23 December 1986, he was the first African American bishop in the western
United States, the 12th black bishop
ever appointed in our country, and a
real Christmas gift to the archdiocese
of Los Angeles.
He was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, one of 12 children
in his Catholic family. He went to an all black Catholic school
run by white nuns and priests of St. Joseph's Society of the
Sacred Heart, who have a special ministry to the African
American community in the United States. Carl knew from
early childhood that he wanted to become a priest (one of
his sisters also became a nun). So, he left home at the age
of 14 for the Josephite high school seminary in Newburgh,
New York. He continued studying with the Josephites
through college and seminary, and was ordained a priest of
the Society of St. Joseph in June 1973. Before he came to
California, his third parish appointment was as the first
black pastor of our country's oldest traditionally black
Catholic parish, St. Francis Xavier in Baltimore, Maryland.
Bishop Fisher's ministry brought a lot of joy to the whole
Los Angeles community; he taught the tough truths of our
faith with an engaging and disarming humor, and kept up
with the interests of his flock, even to the point of penning
this prayer for Soap Opera Digest:
“Almighty and Eternal God, help us to realize that we are no
longer 'The Young and the Restless.' But help us to remember that we have 'One Life to Live.' Let us remain always
close to you, walking not in 'Ryan's Hope' but in Christian
hope. For us, [our] destination is heaven, not J.R.'s 'Dallas.'”
Bishop Fisher evangelized with a lively spirit even as for
two years before his death in 1993 he battled colon cancer. Cardinal Roger Mahoney said of him, “The courage with
which he faced such a difficult illness inspired all of
us. Surely his greatest gift to all of us over these years and
months was in modeling how to endure suffering and how to
offer our pains and sufferings for the good of others.”
Bishop Fisher is buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of
Our Lady of the Angels, but he lives on in eternity, in our
prayers for priests and vocations, in our prayers and sacrifices offered for others, and in our courage in the face of
illness and death. We pray for him with faith and love and in
“Christian hope” as we know his “destination is heaven, not
J.R.'s Dallas.” Read more about Bishop Fisher in Blazing an
African American Trail: The History of Black Catholics in
the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, by Andrew Knox, Mill City
Press, 2008.

DIAMONDS
Sunday, November 30th will be a fifth Sunday of the month, the time when we here at
St. Elizabeth's honor our DIAMONDS those special jewels in our midst who have
reached or surpassed the venerable age of
75! We will have a special blessing for the Diamonds at all the
masses and those who attend the 10:15 or 12:00 Masses will
receive a token of our appreciation lovingly prepared by some
students at St. Elizabeth School! Hope to see on Sunday, November 30th, the first Sunday of Advent!
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Coming to the end of the Church year, we can wonder how we got “extreme unction” out of “anointing of
the sick.” “Extreme” comes from a Latin phrase, in
extremis, which in English refers to the last struggle
of a dying person. “Last rites” is a phrase in common
usage, and refers to the fact that years ago everyone
waited until the last crisis of illness to summon the
priest. The goal of anointing had always been healing
and forgiveness, but in time it began to be seen as a
preparation for death. In a hard world, almost anything from a hangnail to a sneeze could be life‑threatening, so perhaps the change was inevitable.
The emphasis on the penitential aspects was heightened, even to the odd practice of Rome in the twelfth
century, when the sick person was sprinkled with
ashes mixed with holy water and given a hair shirt as
a sign of penance.
The reformers thankfully overlooked some of
these oddities of history, and today the sacrament of
the sick is much more generously applied to persons in
a wide range of situations. Still, it is a sacrament of
reconciliation, and for that reason is not celebrated
for an infant or toddler, although there is a rite for a
visit to a sick child not including anointing or Communion.

29th.
