In early March I had the privilege, along with many other corporations and small businesses, of being invited to the 4th
Annual Diversity and Business Summit. What an event! I was given access to management in America's oldest sport – Major
League Baseball. The topic was DIVERSITY & INCLUSION, a theme close to my heart as it is something I always live by
in my everyday life. I'm saddened to see the state of our culture and how children are not being taught the importance
of accepting others for who they are no matter their background and experiences. For businesses, it's not a choice. Not
accepting your customers’ diverse backgrounds could literally make you lose money. Allowing diversity and inclusion to be
an integral part of your business means success. “Diversity is a game we all need to play” said Marian Rhoads, VP of Diversity
and Inclusion for Arizona Diamondbacks.

While the culture of our society at this time looks bleak when
it comes to diversity and inclusion, I have great expectations
that those who strive for good will do the right thing. After
all, everyone walking the planet can say they have a diverse
experience and who doesn't want to be included in society. Let's
face it no one likes being an outcast. The Latino Connection
proudly holds itself to a high standard of including as many points
of views as diverse as our community.
On to another topic, did you notice last month's issue was
GLOSSY? How exciting! We are pleased to present our feature
cover for the months of April and May, Doctora Ana Maria Polo
from Caso Cerrado. Who doesn't love Doctora Polo? We actually
received several requests to feature her and your wish is our
command. We hope you enjoy her common sense answers to
our questions. You can practically hear her talking as you read her
story. If there are other celebrities you would like to see on our
cover, feel free to contact us and let us hear from you.

A principios de marzo tuve el privilegio junto con otros
operadores y dueños de pequeños negocios invitados de asistir
al 4to. Encuentro Anual de Diversidad y Negocios, este evento
me dio acceso a la administración del deporte más antiguo de
América... la Liga Mayor de Béisbol. El tópico era la diversidad y
la inclusión, un tema que me tocó directamente en el corazón,
porque es algo en lo que he creído cada día de mi vida. Me
entristece ver el estado de nuestra cultura y como a nuestros
niños no se les enseña la importancia de aceptar a otros por
quiénes son, sin importar su trasfondo o sus experiencias. En
los negocios no es una opción el no aceptar la diversidad o
el trasfondo de tus clientes, esto puede literalmente hacerte
perder dinero. El permitir la diversidad y la inclusión es una
parte integral de hacer negocios y tener éxito. “La diversidad
es un juego que todos necesitamos jugar” dijo Marian
Rhoads, vicepresidenta de la diversidad e inclusión por los
Diamondbacks de Arizona.
Mientras que la cultura de la sociedad se ve desalentadora en
este momento en lo que se refiere a la diversidad e inclusión,
tengo grandes expectativas por aquellos que se esfuerzan por
hacer lo correcto de buena voluntad. Después de todo, todos
los que caminan sobre este planeta pueden decir que tienen una
experiencia diferente ¡¿ Y quién no quiere sentirse incluido en la
sociedad?!. Seamos honestos, a nadie le gusta sentirse relegado.
Latino Connection se mantiene orgullosamente firme frente a
estos altos niveles incluyendo tantos puntos de vista como sean
posibles dentro de una comunidad tan diversa como la nuestra.
Por otro lado, ¿se dieron cuenta que nuestro número del mes
pasado era brillante? ¡Qué emoción! Estamos encantados de

April is National Autism Month and to acknowledge it we are highlighting a family that faces autism in a very special and
unique way. The Moran family, Eddie, 48; his wife Ruth, 43, and their twin sons Tyler and Daniel, 15, are a very special family
because they volunteer of their time to numerous community organizations. Even though one of their sons is afflicted with
autism, the Moran family chose to highlight how they deal with the issue in a positive way. They are not a family who deals
with the negatives. For this reason, this article is about how they help the community.
There is a Biblical principal that says it is better to give than to
receive. Research has shown that giving helps both emotionally
and mentally. Moran states that working together helps the family
come closer. “It helps to find balance in our hectic lives. With the
different activities that my wife and I have been involved with, we
have had the pleasure of spending small moments of leisure at all
the different traveling locations we have gone with our children.
It’s the little things that matter.”
Moran offers suggestions on how you and your family can get
involved. “I think it’s important for families to find an activity
that is not only fun, but also fulfilling in spirit and mind. It’s also
important to research whatever organization you are interested
in participating in as a family. One more thing, try to find
organizations that fill a need within your community, those events
are always the most satisfying.”
The Morans love to find projects they can do together as a family
and some have even included sports related activities that accept
autistic children like Special Olympics. A few of the community
projects they have served as a family include: Meals on Wheels
for HIV patients; Red Knight Music Association a volunteer parent
group; Autism Walk; Dancing on the Streets (Community-wide
Salsa Festival); Little League Baseball; Karate, PTA events, and
other not-for profit organizations to name a few.
When asked what is appealing about volunteering as a family,
Eddie Moran explained the following, “We believe that it is a form
of giving back, and while also teaching our kids the importance
of service to others that are less fortunate than we are. Also,
we strongly believe that it is not fair to complain when we have
the capacity to be the change we wish to see in our community
and within ourselves. In getting involved we have become
knowledgeable about the different services within our community,
we pass this information off freely to others. My family and I have
also made some life-long friends in the process of giving back.”
With everything in life there are pros and cons to doing any
activity, being involved in the community is no different. Moran
helps us with some tips on both. The pros are “a rewarding
experience that allows you to do something and/or change
something much more bigger than you, or any single person
becoming a Latino family role-model for others to follow and
becoming inspiration to those around me. Leaving a legacy for my
children to follow themselves down the road.” Eddie also reflects
on the importance of balance, “If time is not managed correctly,
you run the risk of wearing yourself thin. As much as we love to
help, there is a time and place for everything including doing the
things that we love. Sometimes that means saying no to things
that are not as important to us, and saying yes to the things that
do matter. Is it important or appealing?”
As we can see the Moran family has unique challenges within their
family, but they choose to spend their time focused on positive
activities that benefit the community. We are proud to feature
a Latino family that promote together time by helping others.

Abril es el Mes Nacional del Autismo y para reconocerlo queremos resaltar a una familia que se enfrenta al autismo en una manera
especial y única. La Familia Moran, Eddie de 48 años, su esposa Ruth de 43 y sus hijos gemelos Tyler y Daniel de 15. Son una familia
especial porque dedican mucho de su tiempo como voluntarios para organizaciones comunitarias. A pesar de que uno de sus hijos
se ha visto afectado con autismo, la Familia Moran a escogido resaltar como enfrentan este dilema de una manera positiva, no son
una familia que ve lo negativo. Por esa razón este artículo es sobre como ellos ayudan en la comunidad.
Los Moran disfrutan los proyectos en los que pueden involucrarse como familia y algunas incluyen actividades deportivas que aceptan
niños autistas como las Olimpiadas Especiales. Algunos de los
proyectos en los que la familia ha servido incluyen: Comidas
sobre Ruedas para pacientes HIV positivos, Red Knight Music
Association un grupo para padres voluntarios, caminatas por
el Autismo, Bailando en las Calles (Evento de la comunidad
Festival de Salsa) Pequeña Liga de Baseball, Karate, evento de la
Asociación de Padres y Maestros y otras organizaciones sin fines
de lucro, por nombrar solo algunas.
Cuando les preguntamos que les atrae de ser voluntarios como
familia, Eddie nos explicó lo siguiente, “creemos que es una forma
de devolver a la Comunidad y a la vez una forma de enseñar a
nuestros hijos la importancia de servir a otros que son de una
manera u otra menos afortunados que nosotros. También creemos
fervientemente que no es justo quejarse cuando tenemos la
posibilidad de cambiar lo que deseamos ver en nuestra comunidad
y en nosotros mismos. Al mantenernos involucrados nos hemos
convertido en una familia que sabe sobre los diferentes servicios
en la comunidad y estamos en la capacidad de compartir esa
información con otros. Mi Familia y yo hemos establecido buenas
amistades en el proceso de dar a nuestra comunidad.”
También existe el principio bíblico que es mejor dar que recibir.
Estudios han demostrado que el dar o servir ayuda tanto
emocional como mentalmente. Moran nos explica también que
el servir juntos como familia los ha unido. “Nos ayuda a crear un
balance en nuestra vidas ocupadas. A diferencia de las actividades
en las que mi esposa y yo estamos involucrados tenemos el gusto
de disfrutar momentos de distracción en los diferentes sitios
que visitamos con nuestros hijos. Son las pequeñas cosas las que
realmente son importantes.”
Moran también ofrece sugerencias sobre como Usted y su familia
pueden involucrarse en la comunidad. “Creo que es importante
para la familias encontrar una actividad que no sea solo divertida,
sino que también nos llene espiritual y mentalmente. Es también
importante informarse sobre la organización con la que se
quiere participar como familia. Una cosa más, trate de encontrar
organizaciones que llenen una necesidad en la comunidad, esos
eventos son los más satisfactorios.”

Como en todo en la vida hay pro y contras en cualquier actividad,
involucrarse en la comunidad no es diferente. Moran nos da
consejos en los dos casos. Los pros son “ es una experiencia
gratificante que te permite hacer algo o cambiar algo que es
mucho más grande que tú, una sola persona o ser una familia
Latina que se convierte en un modelo a seguir por otros,
convertirte en una inspiración para los que te rodean. Dejar un
legado para mis hijos, que les sirva más adelante en sus vidas.”
Eddie también reflexiona sobre la importancia del balance,
“si el tiempo no se maneja correctamente corres el riesgo de
desgastarte. Por mucho que te guste ayudar hay un tiempo y un
lugar para cada cosa incluyendo las cosas que amas. Eso quiere
decir que algunas veces el decir no a cosas no tan importantes
significa decir si a lo que realmente nos apasiona. Es importante o
interesante?”
Como pueden ver la Familia Moran enfrenta retos únicos dentro
de su núcleo familiar, pero han escogido el invertir su tiempo
concentrados en actividades positivas que benefician
su comunidad.

Though we continue to dream of an improved immigration system, 2016 opened with a series of enforcement operations
that created a shock across immigrant communities from coast to coast.
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a January press release “our borders are not open to illegal migration; if
you come here illegally, we will send you back consistent with our laws and values.” Officers of enforcement and removal
operations have cracked down on undocumented people in immigrant communities since the priorities for immigration
enforcement set in November 2014.

rights violations or because they had valid applications to
stay in the U.S."
It is easy to understand why law enforcement needs to organize an aggressive crack down of
criminal organizations and dangerous individuals. However, 121 families were detained because they
missed a court hearing; not because they were dangerous. Mothers and children without criminal
records are being placed in deportation proceedings.
The Department of Homeland Security‘s Enforcement and Removal Operations division does not
admit to carrying out raids against families, and there are no official statistics of incursions into
households. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the operations are tied to
enforcement priorities. However, the majority of people detained were released due to civil rights
violations or because they had valid applications to stay in the U.S.. Most had claims of asylum.

Equally concerning, youth granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals have been arrested based
on social media posts and testimony from peers accusing them of gang memberships. Groups with
Gang Tattoos, Gang Colors and friends of known gang members run the risk of deportation even if
not involved in criminal activity, or charged with a crime.
The continued warrant-less searches reported across the country in immigrant households, as well as
the arrest of collaterals* are a contradiction to U.S. laws and values.

A pesar de que continuamos soñando con un mejor sistema de inmigración el 2016 ha iniciado con una serie de operaciones
legales que han creado conmoción dentro de la comunidad inmigrante de costa a costa.
El Secretario de Seguridad Nacional de los Estados Unidos, Jeh Johnson, dijo en un boletín de prensa emitido en enero
“nuestras fronteras no están abiertas a la migración ilegal, si usted viene a este país ilegalmente lo enviaremos de vuelta
de acuerdo con nuestras leyes y valores.” Los oficiales de ejecución y las operaciones de remoción se han ensañado con
las personas indocumentadas de comunidades inmigrantes desde que nuevas prioridades en las leyes de inmigración se
establecieron en Noviembre del 2014.
"Sin embargo la mayoría de las personas detenidas han sido liberadas
debido a la violación de sus derechos civiles o bien porque han tenido
aplicaciones válidas para permanecer en los Estados Unidos."
Es fácil de entender porque los oficiales de la ley necesitan organizar operativos más agresivos con
organizaciones criminales e individuos peligrosos. Sin embargo,121 familias fueron detenidas por
no asistir a su cita en la corte en la fecha señalada; no porque fueran peligrosos. Madres y niños sin
antecedentes penales han sido colocados bajo procesos de deportación.

De igual manera nos concierne que jóvenes acogidos a la Acción Diferida para los llegados en la
Infancia, han sido arrestados basados en publicaciones de los medios sociales y testimonios de
compañeros acusándolos de ser miembros de pandillas. Grupos con tatuajes de pandillas, colores de
pandillas o con amigos o conocidos que sean miembros de pandillas corren el riesgo de deportación
aún si no han estado envueltos en ninguna actividad criminal o no han sido acusados de ningún
crimen.
Las redadas desautorizadas reportadas a través del país en casas de inmigrantes tanto como los
arrestos de personas relacionadas con estas familias son una contradicción a las leyes y los valores de
los Estados Unidos.

TLC: You don't call yourself a judge, but
rather an arbitrator. Would you please
explain the difference?
AMP: A judge is a government employee,
by definition every T.V. judge is an arbiter
because they work for a T.V. network. An
arbiter is usually an attorney or a person
trained in the art of mediation or conflict
resolution. In my case, I do binding
arbitration, the litigants must comply
with my decision if unable to reach a
compromise.
TLC: What is the strangest or
most surprising case that has affected
you personally?
AMP: During my 15 years tenure, I have
seen a lot of strange and surprising cases,
however I always recall the one in which
I lost "my cool" and acted aggressively
against an unruly litigant by throwing a
glass of water at his face. This man had
been sexually abusing his 16 year old niece
and turning her into a sex slave. To my
surprise, the audience felt I should have
been MORE aggressive.

TLC: Do you consider yourself addicted
to your work? Since it seems you have so
many shows going on at the same time.
AMP: OH NO! I am not addicted to
work. We have an incredible team of
producers who really get it! In fact, we film
240 shows in 55 days! Quite efficient. The
rest of the year, I attend numerous events
with different agencies and institutions
such as Stand Up to Cancer, Race for the
Cure and fan events.
TLC: What other projects are you
working on the future?
TLC: You are one of the influential
leaders in the Latino community.
Knowing you have a great following
would you consider running for
political office?
AMP: I am always working on new
projects. For one, I am attempting to take
my show to the general market without
getting lost in translation. I am also
working on a game show for Latinos as
well as various documentaries on relevant
subject matters. I believe that television is
a powerful communicator.
AMP: Although I possess a Bachelors
Degree in Political Science and I fully
understand the importance of a healthy
democracy, I have become quite
disillusioned with the political process,
especially during the ongoing presidential
campaign. If I ever become involved in
politics, it would be in my native Cuba. I
left in 1961 and I have never returned but
I hope to see a free and democratic Cuba
before my death!
TLC: How do you respond to your critics
who say your show portrays the worst of
our Latino community?
AMP: The critics who say that my
show portrays the worst of the Latino
community have not followed my show
consistently. The show portrays every kind
of Latino that is willing to expose their
conflicts to the world… the good, the bad
and the ugly!
TLC: What do you do to get the energy
needed to deal with so many human
problems that could otherwise weigh
someone down emotionally
and mentally?
AMP: I cannot denied the fact that some
cases are emotionally draining and that
there have been times in which I have
gotten very sensitive. From the bottom of
my heart, I have HOPE in humanity and I
am a true believer that justice will always
reveal the truth. In addition to that, during
the time that I am not taping I try to
disconnect myself by doing the things that
I enjoy, like reading, meditating traveling
etc…

TLC: In what ways has fame changed
your life?
AMP: Fame is a difficult consequence of
this trade. It has changed my life quite
significantly although I take it in stride.
Loss of anonymity sounds simple but it
is difficult to deal with. However, I must
admit that most of the attention I attract is
quite respectful and loving.
TLC: We know you are an advocate for
women's health and in particular breast
cancer awareness. Would you please
send a message to our readers, both
men and women on why do you feel it is
important?
AMP: Health is the most valuable asset we
have in life! Cancer in particular, is a silent
killer. We tend to react only to health crisis
instead of keeping a preventive regimen.
If you are facing a serious diagnosis, keep
calm, inform yourself and follow your
doctor's advice. Have faith and surround
yourself with positive people.
TLC: Have you ever regretted a decision
you made on your show?
AMP: I have regretted some decisions, but
I always have had the chance to correct it.
That's the advantage of the legal system.
It’s why we have appellate courts.
TLC: Do you watch television? If
so, what kinds of shows do you like
watching? What is your guilty pleasure?
AMP: I am an avid television watcher, in
fact, I am a binge watcher. I devour my
favorite series once their out! Orange is
the New Black, Masters of Sex, Homeland,
Nashville, Shameless, to name a few, and
naturally, CASO CERRADO!

¿Usted no se considera una jueza si no,
más bien un árbitro podría explicarnos la
diferencia?

Un juez es un empleado del gobierno, por
definición, un juez de la televisión es un árbitro
o mediador porque trabaja para una cadena
de televisión. Un mediador es usualmente un
abogado o una persona entrenada en el arte
de la mediación con el objetivo de resolver un
conflicto, en mi caso es una mediación legal
en la cual los litigantes deben sujetarse a mi
decisión si no han sido capaces de alcanzar un
compromiso.
Usted es un líder con mucha influencia en
la comunidad latina, sabiendo esto, ¿ha
considerado algún momento postularse para
una carrera política?
¿Cuál es el caso más extraño o más
sorprendente que le ha afectado
personalmente?
Durante mis 15 años de ejercicio he visto
bastantes casos extraños y sorprendentes, sin
embargo siempre recuerdo uno en el que perdí
la calma y actúe de manera agresiva contra
un litigante revoltoso lanzándole un vaso de
agua en la cara. Este hombre había estado
abusando sexualmente de su sobrina de 16 años
convirtiéndola en una esclava sexual. Para mi
sorpresa la audiencia consideró que yo debí
haber sido más agresiva con el.
En un futuro, ¿usted ve Caso Cerrado cruzar
la barrera cultural en este género dentro de la
televisión americana?
Absolutamente, yo creo que el mercado general
se enamoraría del estilo que tenemos en decidir
los casos y en el contenido de cada uno de ellos.
Traemos testimonios de expertos que convierten
el programa en una experiencia informativa y
enriquecedora y reflejan en muy buena parte
conflictos reales de nuestra comunidad en este
país.
¿Se considera usted adicta al trabajo? Da la
impresión de que siempre tiene más de un
programa desarrollándose al mismo tiempo.
Oh No! No soy adicta al trabajo! Tenemos un
equipo increíble de productores que hacen un
gran trabajo, filmamos 240 programas en 55 días,
es bastante eficiente! El resto del año atiendo
numerosos eventos con diferentes agencias o

A pesar de que poseo un título en Ciencias
Políticas y entiendo completamente la
importancia de una democracia saludable, me
siento realmente desilusionada con el proceso
político, especialmente ahora con la campaña
presidencial. Si alguna vez me involucro en
la política, lo haría en mi tierra natal, Cuba.
Salí en 1961 y no he vuelto nunca más pero
tengo esperanza de que veré una Cuba libre y

Los críticos que dicen que mi programa
representa lo peor de la comunidad latina no
lo han seguido de manera consistente, el show
muestra cada tipo de latino que está dispuesto
a exponer sus conflictos al mundo... lo bueno, lo
malo y lo feo.
¿Dónde encuentra Usted la energía necesaria
para enfrentar problemas humanos de
esta naturaleza, que bien podrían en
otras circunstancias drenar mental y
emocionalmente a una persona?
No puedo negar el hecho de que algunos casos
realmente te dejan una carga emocional y en
momentos en los que te sensibilizas frente a
una causa. Desde el fondo de mi corazón tengo
esperanza en la humanidad y soy una verdadera
creyente de que la justicia siempre revelara la
verdad, además durante el tiempo en el que
no estoy grabando los programas trato de
desconectarme haciendo cosas que me distraen
como la lectura, la meditación, viajar
¿En qué otros proyectos piensa involucrarse
en el futuro?
Siempre estoy trabajando en nuevos proyectos,
por ejemplo en este momento estoy tratando
de llevar el programa a un nuevo nivel general
sin perdernos en la traducción. También
estoy tratando de establecer un programa
de concursos para latinos y a la vez varios
documentales con temas relevantes para nuestra
comunidad, creo que la Televisión puede ser un
medio de comunicación muy poderoso.
¿De qué manera ha cambiado la fama su vida?
La fama es una consecuencia en este trabajo
y ha cambiado mi vida significativamente pero
siempre trato de ver la forma positiva, la pérdida
de la anonimidad suena simple pero es un tanto
difícil de sobrellevar sin embargo debo admitir
que siempre he recibido el respeto y cariño del
público.
Sabemos que siempre ha sido una vocera
de la salud de la mujer, en particular en la
prevención del cáncer del seno. ¿Podría por
favor enviar un mensaje a nuestros lectores,
hombres y mujeres sobre el porqué este es un
tema importante?
La salud es lo más importante que tenemos en
la vida. El cáncer en particular es un asesino
silencioso. Tendemos a reaccionar cuando
enfrentamos una crisis de salud en lugar de
prevenir. Si está enfrentando un diagnóstico
serio, mantenga la calma, infórmese y siga el
consejo de su doctor. Tenga fe y rodéese usted
mismo de personas positivas.
¿Alguna vez se ha arrepentido de una decisión
tomada en el programa?
Me he arrepentido de algunas decisiones….
pero siempre hay la oportunidad de corregir.
Es la ventaja del sistema legal, y es por eso que
tenemos cortes de apelación.
¿Usted mira la televisión? Si es así, ¿Qué tipo
de programa le gusta ver? ¿Cuál es su placer
inconfesable?
Soy una ávida televidente, de hecho soy una
televidente compulsiva. Devoro mis programas
favoritos una vez que están disponibles! Orange
is the New Black, Masters of Sex, Homeland,
Nashville, Shameless, por nombrar unos pocos y
por supuesto CASO CERRADO!

Verny Varela has positioned himself as one of the most
multifaceted artists within his genre, having ample
experience in the world of Salsa music not only as an artist
and musician but as well as a composer. His talents have
opened the door for him to tour the world and share stages
with international renowned artists such as: Gabino Pampini,
Tito Gómez, Pete ‘El Conde’ Rodríguez and Thievery
Corporation, among others.
Today, Verny presents us with his new song, “Vive El Momento”, in
which he summoned an array of talented musicians who are not
only recognized by the music industry but also praised for their
impressive musical trajectory.
“‘Vive El Momento’ is a very special song to me, not only because
it’s the first one we released this year but because it has a positive
and joyful message with a sound guaranteed to seduce anyone
who hears it,” affirms Verny.
The song was arranged by Verny and co-produced by Latin
Grammy nominated producers Luis Bonilla y Luisito Quintero.
One of the special invited guests included bass player Rubén
Rodríguez, who has recorded over 250 albums with artists such as
Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Rubén Blades, Isaac Delgado and Marc
Anthony. Rodríguez embodies a modern Nuyorican Salsa sound
thanks to his extensive list of collaborations with famed producer
Sergio George. Luisito Quintero played the percussion and Cuban
pianist Axel Tosca played the keys.
“Vive El Momento” was recorded at Sky Light Studios by Latin
Grammy winning sound engineer Guido Díaz, who won the award
for Best Salsa Album for Celia Cruz’s ‘La Negra tiene Tumbao.
Verny Varela is an arranger, composer, singer and flutist. Born
in Cali and raised in the "Barrio Obrero," home to some of the
world’s most famous salsa musicians, Verny has had a lifelong love
affair with music. Verny Varela started singing and playing with his
father's band "El Nuevo Son" at age 15.
He later went on to sing with Ismael Miranda, Adalberto Santiago
and Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, all members of the Fania All Stars,
both in Cali and in Tulua, Colombia. In 1997, Verny became the
lead singer in the Gabino Pampini Band, and later toured Europe
and the U.S. with Tito Gomez.
In 2004, Verny released his album "Amar de Nuevo.” Songs like
"Matilde" and "He Vuelto Amar" became hits in Cali. 2008, Verny
co-wrote, arranged and released his second album "Gracias."

Songs like “Soy Latino” and “Pa’l mundo” were featured on this
album. In 2012, Verny released his third album “Evolución” which
featured Eddie Zervigon from the Orquesta Broadway as well as
other prominent salsa musicians from Cali, Colombia. This album
was produced by La Tropa Records from Cali.
Verny has been nominated three times for the Washington Area
Music Award (Wammie) and collaborated with different artists as
a singer, composer and arranger. Verny wrote and recorded for
ESL Music on Thievery Corporation's albums "The Richest Man in
Babylon", "The Cosmic Game” and "Radio Retaliation." Verny sang
on the 40th Anniversary CD of the outstanding charanga band,
Orquesta Broadway, in New York City.
Verny Varela has performed at some of the most important
venues and festivals; such as the Lincoln Memorial, The Kennedy
Center, Smithsonian Museums, Embassy of Colombian, Embassy
of Panama, III World Salsa Festival in Lima, Peru, the Petronio
Alvarez Festival and Feria de La Caña de Azucar in Cali, Colombia.
He holds a bachelor's degree in music from the Universidad
del Valle in Colombia and a master’s degree in arts with a
concentration in Afro-Hispanic Studies from Howard University in
Washington, D.C. He also studied jazz at the University
of District of Columbia. Currently, Verny Varela teaches at
Howard University.

1. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius.
Seriously. He has the award to prove it.
Miranda was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2015,
an award that's commonly referred to as the
"Genius Grant." For his creativity, talent, and
potential, Miranda (and each of the 23 other
greats) receive a $625,000 fellowship, paid out
over the next five years.
2. Not only is he a genius, but he's a
freakin' freestyle mastermind.
Miranda is a lifelong hip-hop fan, which explains
the Mobb Deep, DMX, and Biggie references
peppered throughout "Hamilton."
But did you know he's also a member of a
hip-hop improv group called Freestyle Love
Supreme? The troupe has performed at comedy
festivals and a handful of colleges around the
country.
3. Before he wrote "Hamilton," he
worked on "Bring It On: The Musical."
How he remains so humble is beyond me.
True story.
In 2012, Miranda co-wrote the lyrics for "Bring
It On: The Musical." Let me know if that little
nugget helps you win trivia someday.
4. In 2013, Miranda appeared on one of
the lowest-rated TV shows of all time.
Seriously. ALL TIME.
It was a very short-lived NBC drama called "Do
No Harm," which holds the infamous distinction
of being the lowest-rated in-season broadcast
scripted series debut since 1987 and the least
watched drama premiere, at least on the big four
broadcast networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox).
Needless to say, the man knows defeat,
which probably makes his recent victories that
much sweeter.
5. In between those projects, Miranda
found time to write some awardwinning, mind-melting songs for Neil
Patrick Harris.
Remember the 2013 Tony Awards where Neil
Patrick Harris closed the show with a mind-

blowing song and dance number that accurately
referenced events that transpired during the
awards ceremony? Events that couldn't have
been predicted or planned for? Harris has
Miranda to thank for working behind the scenes
throughout the broadcast to frantically write the
song as the show aired. See what I mean about
improvisational mastermind?
living in poverty) to see "Hamilton." Not just
students from one school, or even 10. We're
talking 20,000 high-school juniors over the
course of a year.
Miranda's efforts paid off — he won a Creative
Arts Emmy for co-writing the hilarious opening
song and impressive closing number for Harris.
8. As if the spectacular success of
"Hamilton" wasn't enough, Miranda
also wrote music for "Star Wars" and is
starting work on a Disney film.
6. He also found a minute (or several
thousand minutes) to write "Hamilton,"
a process which began as most musicals
do, while he was on vacation.
In 2008, Miranda picked up a copy of Ron
Chernow's 832-page Hamilton biography to read
on vacation (as one does), and after reading the
book, he fell in love with Hamilton's life and
story. In Hamilton, he saw glimpses of his father
... and Tupac Shakur.
The biography was the story of an immigrant
with serious command of rhetoric who made
something from nothing, yet most people barely
recognize him from the 10-dollar bill.
Miranda started working on a possible
concept album straightaway, and just a few
months later, he actually performed a song
for President Obama and the first lady when
he was invited by the White House to join the
slate of performers putting on a show about the
"American experience."
Many years and countless hours later, the
mixtape was set aside, but a musical was born.
7. Tickets to "Hamilton" are really,
really hard to get — with one fantastic
exception.
Given its historical subject matter, Miranda
was frequently asked how to make "Hamilton"
accessible to more young people. So he made
it a priority. Now, the show's producers, in
partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation,
have agreed to finance a program to bring 11th
graders from New York City schools
(particularly those with a high number of kids
“If we can excite curiosity in students, there’s
no telling what can happen next,” Miranda said
while announcing the program.
Fresh off writing the cantina music for "Star
Wars: The Force Awakens," Miranda is hard at
work on the music for "Moana," an upcoming
animated feature from Disney. He was recently
in the recording booth with one of the film's
star's, Dwayne "The Rock"Johnson.
9. Then, for good measure, he performed
at the Grammys AND WON.
Miranda and his multitalented cast performed at
the Grammys live via satellite from the Richard
Rodgers Theatre in New York. In the show's
58-year history, this was only the eighth time
it included a musical theater number and the
fourth time it featured a number presented live
via satellite. Shortly after, they took home the
Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
10. Because if you're Lin-Manuel
Miranda, you know just how powerful
art can be.
And you can't stop (won't stop) sharing it with
everyone you can.

When all seemed lost, he managed to
make history, long hair on dudes, and musical

My Dearest Children,
It is with great pleasure and pride that I have chosen to write you this letter and hope to have it published for Mother’s Day.
Although, three out of four of you are parents already and while my oldest has no children of her own she has been a better
parent to the children whose lives she's touched than some of their own parents. I want you to know that I love you all, and
yes … YOU are my favorite.
I know my ways weren't always understood, or liked by you.
I'm still okay with that. I also see that you may still question my
knowledge of what might be best. No worries, I do too. What I
need you to know is that I am very proud of you. I know it may
not show when you need it to, because I do still pull you aside
and put you in your place when you need it. Yes, you feel I should
mind my business and you are 100% correct. Here's the thing...
You ARE my business.
As a mother, when you make the choice to give life, you have
made the decision to become a leader, guidance counselor, and a
few other unwarranted positions. Mother isn't a one role position.
I have gone through some trying times for you children and we as
a family have gone through things most families would never have
recovered from, but here we are. Here I am. I'm not looking for
recognition, medals, trophies. I'm here to let you know I love you,
but won't always be here.
My guidance has been for you to know you have options. I made
mistakes and shared them all with you so you would know which
not to make. I took you to the deep end, and there you learned
to swim. I birthed you, raised you, nourished you and I walk right
along side of you through good times and bad. I disciplined you,
we disagreed, and here we are. When fear stared you in the face,
I was there to make you face it. I let you lose, fall, hurt, cry and
when most moms would hide the child's mistake I made you face
yours even when it meant you'd lose. This doesn't mean I love you
any less. It means I love you so much that I went to all extremes
to properly prepare you.
My children I only ask this one thing of you. Do the same for my
grandchildren. Please Do NOT sell them a false hope of a life that
isn't true. Let them live a reality. Discipline them when they are in
need of discipline, direction, and correction. You are their parents.
They will appreciate you later and if they don't that is okay too.
Don't fool them by making them always right, always the good
kid. If they are wrong, as you sometimes were, let them know and
correct them. Don’t always be there to pick them up when they
fall. Let them pick themselves up. Just as you did when I couldn't
be around.
Guide them on social media sites and the internet. Don't let them
be completely sucked into the electronic world. You had game
systems, but chores, cooking, cleaning, ironing, and laundry and
life basic skills that everyone should be taught. Have them learn,
manners, respect for self, others, and most of all self-awareness
and love. Teach my grandchildren it’s okay to not be right all the
time and love yourself anyway.
Always remember that regardless of what may have crossed your
path, you do make your choices. Despite of any rocky roads, you
have managed to become respectful, self-sufficient, adults with
no fear of dreaming. You are doers, and anything you set your
mind to you can accomplish and will continue to achieve. Be kind
to yourself when you make mistakes, we are far from perfect.
Understand that only you hold the key to your destiny and you are
right where you are meant to be today. Keep pressing forward to
make your mark, leave a legacy of someone who does something
with their life. Even if it means reinventing yourself over and over
again until it just feels right.

Mis queridos niños,
Es con gran placer y orgullo que escribo esta carta y realmente espero que la publiquen por el Día de la Madre. Aunque tres
de los cuatro son padres ya, y la mayor de ustedes aunque no tiene hijos propios ha sabido ser mejor madre, para los niños
cuyas vidas ha impactado, que sus propios padres. Quiero que ustedes sepan que los amo a todos y sí … TÚ eres mi favorito.

Yo sé que mis maneras no siempre fueron entendidas o que
algunas veces ni siquiera les gustaron, pero estoy bien con eso
también. Se que todavía cuestionan mi conocimiento de lo que es
lo mejor para ustedes...no se preocupen, yo también. Quiero que
sepan que estoy muy orgullosa de ustedes, sé que no siempre lo
demuestro cuando ustedes más lo necesitan porque todavía los
llamo a un lado y los pongo en su lugar cuando es necesario. Sí,
yo sé que creen que debería meterme en mis asuntos, están 100%
correctos, pero hay un problema ...Ustedes son mis asuntos.
Como madre cuando tú tomas la decisión de dar vida también
tomas la decisión de convertirte en un líder, un consejero, un
guía y un poco de otras ocupaciones injustificadas. Madre no
es una posición con un solo rol, he pasado momentos difíciles
por ustedes y como familia hemos salido adelante en algunas
situaciones de las que otras familias no se han podido recuperar,
pero aquí estamos. Aquí estoy. No busco reconocimiento, ni
trofeos, ni medallas. Estoy aquí para dejarles saber cuánto los
quiero y que siempre estaré a su lado.
Mi guía, ha sido el dejarles saber que tienen opciones. He
cometido errores y los he compartido con ustedes para que no los
cometan. Los lleve hasta el fondo y desde ahí les he enseñado a
nadar. Los traje al mundo, los eduque, los alimenté y he caminado
a su lado en momentos buenos y malos. Los he disciplinado,
hemos tenido desacuerdos y aquí estamos. Cuando vi temor
en sus caras yo estaba ahí para enseñarles a enfrentarlos. Los
deje ir, caer, lastimarse, llorar y cuando muchas madres hubieran
escondido el error de sus hijos yo les hice dar la cara aunque
eso signifique que perderían. Esto no quiere decir que los quiera
menos, quiere decir que los quiero tanto que iría a los extremos
para prepararlos como es debido.
We are a culture drowning in our possessions. We take in more and more (holiday, birthdays, sales, needs), but rarely find
opportunity to discard of it. As a result, our homes fill up with more and more stuff. And because we believe the best
solution is to find organizational tools to manage all of it, we seek out bigger containers or more efficient organizational
tips and tricks. But simply organizing our stuff (without removing it) is always only a temporary solution. By definition,
organizing possessions is an action that must be repeated over and over and over again.
At its heart, organizing is simply rearranging. And though we may find storage solutions today, we are quickly forced to find new ones
as early as tomorrow. Additionally, organizing our stuff (without removing it) has some other major shortcomings that are
rarely considered:
1. It doesn’t benefit anyone else. The possessions we rarely use
sit on shelves in our basements, attics, and garages… even while
some of our closest friends desperately need them.

camino ustedes han escogido el sendero. Ustedes lo han escogido.
A pesar de los caminos rocosos ustedes se las han arreglado
para ser respetuosos, autosuficientes, adultos sin temor a soñar.
Ustedes son hacedores, cualquier cosa en la que han puesto su
mirada la han conseguido y la seguirán conquistando.
Sean amables con ustedes mismos cuando se equivoquen,
estamos muy lejos de ser perfectos. Entiendan que solo ustedes
tienen la llave de su destino y que están exactamente dónde
deben estar hoy. Manténganse firmes hacia adelante para dejar
una huella, un legado de alguien que hizo algo con su vida. Aún
si esto significa reinventarse y comenzar de nuevo una y otra vez
hasta que se sientan bien.
2. It doesn’t solve our debt problems. It never addresses the
underlying issue that we just buy too much stuff. In fact, many
times, the act of rearranging our stuff even costs us more as we
purchase containers, storage units, or larger homes to house it.
3. It doesn’t turn back our desire for more. The simple act of
organizing our things into boxes, plastic bins, or extra closets
doesn’t turn back our desire to purchase more things. The
culture-driven inclination to find happiness in our possessions is
rarely thwarted in any way through the process.
4. It doesn’t force us to evaluate our lives. While rearranging
our stuff may cause us to look at each of our possessions, it
does not force us to evaluate them—especially if we are just
putting them in boxes and closing the lids. On the other hand,
removing possessions from our home forces questions of
passion, values, and what’s truly most important to us.
5. It accomplishes little in paving the way for other changes.
Organizing may provide a temporary lift to our attitude. It
clears a room and subsequently clears our mind, but rarely
paves the way for healthy, major lifestyle changes. Our house
is too small, our income is too little, and we still can’t find
enough time in the day. We may have rearranged our stuff…
but not our lives.
On the other hand, the act of removing possessions from our home accomplishes many of those
purposes. It is not a temporary solution that must be repeated. It is an action of permanence—once
an item has been removed, it is removed completely. Whether we re-sell our possessions, donate
them to charity, or give them to a friend, they are immediately put to use by those who need them.
Removing possessions begins to turn back our desire for more as we find freedom, happiness, and
abundance in owning less. And removing ourselves from the all-consuming desire to own more
creates opportunity for significant life change to take place.

in your home. Rid yourself of the extra weight in a permanent manner. Carry a trash bag from
room-to-room. See how big of a donation pile you can make. Or help eliminate debt by selling them.
It doesn’t matter so much how you remove them, as long as you do. For it is far better to de-own
than declutter.

Vivimos en una cultura en la que nos ahogamos en posesiones. Tenemos más y más cada día (feriados, cumpleaños,
ventas, especiales, necesidades) pero raramente encontramos la oportunidad de deshacernos de esto. Como resultado,
nuestras casas se llenan más y más de cosas. Y como creemos que la mejor forma de administrar todo lo que poseemos es
organizarlo, buscamos contenedores más grandes, sistemas de organización más eficientes, consejos y trucos para organizar.
Pero la simple organización de las cosas sin removerlas solamente es una solución temporal. Por definición el organizar
posesiones es una acción que debe ser repetida una y otra vez.
En realidad organizar simplemente es reacomodar y aunque encontremos nuevas y más eficientes soluciones de almacenamiento, el
día mañana nos veremos forzados a encontrar otras que sean más eficientes. Adicionalmente, organizar nuestras cosas sin removerlas,
tiene otras desventajas que raramente consideramos:
1. No beneficia a nadie más. Las posesiones que raramente
usamos, pero las mantenemos en nuestras repisas, sótanos,
áticos, en nuestros garajes… aún sabiendo que nuestros amigos
cercanos pueden estar necesitándolo desesperadamente.
2. No solucionan los problemas de deudas. No tomamos en
cuenta que la base del problema es que compramos demasiadas
cosas, de hecho muchas veces el acto de re-organizar las cosas
nos cuesta aún más...tenemos que comprar contenedores,
rentar bodegas, o hasta comprar casas más grandes en las que
quepan todas nuestras pertenencias.
3. No disminuye nuestro deseo de más. El simple acto de
organizar las cosas en repisas, en contenedores plásticos, en
armarios no disminuye el deseo que tenemos de comprar más
cosas. La cultura consumista en la que vivimos, que nos incita
a pensar que encontraremos la felicidad en las posesiones rara
vez disminuye durante el proceso de organizar y limpiar
4. No nos ayuda a evaluar nuestras vidas. En algunas
ocasiones a través del proceso de re-organizar nuestras
posiciones, nos vemos forzados a echar un vistazo a cada una
de ellas y las evaluamos, especialmente cuando solamente
las estamos poniendo en cajas con tapas y nos olvidamos de
ellas por un tiempo. Por otro lado removiendo las posesiones
de nuestra casa nos vemos forzados a preguntarnos qué nos
apasiona, cuáles son nuestros valores y que es más importante
para nosotros.
5. Es muy poco lo que se logra en preparar el camino para
otros cambios. El organizar puede proveer un cambio temporal
en su actitud, el cuarto está limpio y despejado por lo tanto
su mente está limpia y despejada, pero esta actitud raramente
prepara el camino para un cambio en nuestro estilo de vida,
nuestra casa es muy chica, nuestro ingreso muy pequeño y
no encontramos suficiente tiempo durante el día. Hemos
reacomodado todas nuestras cosas pero no nuestras vidas.
Por otro lado está el acto de re-mover las posesiones en nuestra casa cuando esto nos ayuda a
lograr muchos propósitos, no es una solución temporal que tiene que ser repetida, es una acción
que permanece. Una vez que sido removido, está removido completamente ya sea que revendamos
nuestras posiciones, las donemos a organizaciones de caridad o para dar a un amigo, están
inmediatamente encontrando un propósito para aquellos que las necesitan.

Al remover nuestras posesiones comenzamos a darle la espalda nuestro deseo de más y comenzamos
a encontrar libertad, felicidad y abundancia en poseer menos. Al removernos nosotros mismos del
deseo que nos consume de poseer más creamos una oportunidad para un cambio significativo en
nuestra vida.
Como pueden ver al organizar nuestra casa y nuestra vida nos enfrentamos al reto de remover
todas las cosas innecesarias en la casa, a remover de nosotros mismos el bagaje extra de manera
permanente. Recorra con una bolsa de basura de un cuarto a otro y vea cuánto puede recoger para
donar. O ayude a eliminar su deuda vendiendo las cosas. No importa cuánto remueva mientras
remueva algo. Por eso es mejor Remover que Reorganizar.
