una joven de 22 años, estuvo en la
cárcel durante 8 meses, acusada
injustamente de asesinar a su hijo.
Ella pasó duros momentos donde
casi todos la señalaban como una
asesina; sufriendo por el fallecimiento
de su hijo y separada de su otro
bebé. Trágicamente su niño muere
la misma noche en que fue dado de
alta del hospital, pues los doctores no
encontraron una causa para mantenerlo
allí. Luego del fallecimiento, un médico
intentó culpar a Lorena, a pesar de
que no había ninguna prueba en la
autopsia que lo demostrara. El

Kevin
Holmes, quien logró la libertad de
Lorena, comentó durante la cena de
agradecimiento que ofreció la familia
de Lorena a todos quienes la ayudaron:
“Algunas veces los abogados están
envueltos en algunos casos solamente
por el dinero, otras porque la corte
lo pide ya que la persona no puede
costear un abogado, y algunas veces
hay una mano más grande que te
mueve y hace que te envuelvas en
un caso. Y eso fue lo que pasó…
Recuerdo cuando conocí a Lorena,

much harder. In North Charleston,
Lorena, a young woman of 22, was
in jail for 8 months, unjustly accused
of murdering her son. She spent hard
times where almost everybody viewed
her as a killer; suffering from the death
of her son and having another baby
separated from her. Tragically the child
dies the same night he was discharged
from the hospital, as doctors found no
reason to keep him there. After the
death, a doctor tried to blame Lorena,
even though there was no evidence in
the autopsy to prove it.
Defense attorney Kevin Holmes from
Steinberg Law Firm, who ultimately
helped free Lorena, said during the
appreciation dinner offered by the
family of Lorena to all who helped in
her struggle: "Sometimes lawyers are
involved in some cases only for the
money, others because the court calls
because the person cannot afford a
lawyer, and sometimes there is a big
hand that moves you and makes you
get involved in a case.” And that's what
happened ... I remember when I met
Lorena, we could only speak through
the window that separated us and I
could see that she was very scared,
because for people like Lorena and

8 meses con amargura y sufrimiento,
puede verlo así o puede decidir
verlo como una nueva oportunidad
de darle gracias a Dios y a todos los
que hemos ayudamos para que esté
aquí con nosotros, y la mejor manera
de agradecer es usar lo que ella
aprendió para ayudar a otros”.
Lorena
está
inmensamente
agradecida por todos quienes
ayudaron en su caso, y nos comenta:
“Cuando uno está metido donde yo
estaba, ahí en la cárcel, uno tiene más
amor a la vida, más confianza en sí
mismo. A veces por ser hispano, crees
que no vas a lograr salir, pero nadie
debe darse por vencido, tenemos
que confiar en Dios y luchar. Enseñé
a muchas mujeres en la cárcel jugar
cartas al estilo de mi país. Aprendí
que la vida hay que valorarla y que
todos somos iguales. En la cárcel fue
la primera vez que tuve amistad con
alguien estadounidense, aunque yo
casi no hablaba inglés, y fue una gran
amistad. Debemos tratar de aprender
de las otras personas, y las otras
personas aprenderán de ti. Tengo una
madre que ha dado todo por mí, pero
quiero aprender a ser adulta, luchar
por mí misma y ayudar a los hispanos,
porque unidos podemos. Mi abogado,
quien logró me quitaran los cargos, es
estadounidense, y se portó como un
padre defendiendo a su hija. Todos
podemos ayudarnos a luchar por
nuestros derechos y tener confianza
en ello. Si uno lo desea puede lograr
lo que sea. Intenta y lo verás”.
her family, who have never been in
trouble, our legal system can be very
frightening. After talking a few minutes,
I knew she was innocent. Now she can
look at those 8 months with bitterness
and suffering, or she can decide to
view it as a new opportunity to give
thanks to God and to everybody that
has helped her to be here with us, and
the best way to thank everyone is to use
what she learned to help others.
Lorena is immensely grateful to
everyone who helped in her case, and
she says: "When you're stuck where
I was there in the prison, you grow
more love for life, more confidence
in yourself. Sometimes just for being
Hispanic, you think you are not going
to make it out, but no one should give
up, we have to trust in God and fight.
I taught many women in prison how
to play cards in my country’s style. I
learned to appreciate my life and that
everyone is equal. It was the first time I
became friends with American women,
even though I hardly spoke English,
but it was a great friendship. We must
try to learn from others, and others
will learn from you. I have a mother
who has given everything for me, but I
want to learn to be an adult, to fight for
myself and help Hispanics, because
together we can do it. My lawyer,
who managed to have the charges
dropped, is American, and acted
like a father defending his daughter.
We can help each other fight for our
rights and have confidence in doing it.

anything. Try and you will see."
