Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima
In Christ, We are Bread for one another:
Broken… we gather.
Nourished… we reach out.
………………….....…………………………….
En Cristo, Somos Pan para cada uno:
Lo Dividimos… Nos Juntamos.
Alimentados… tendemos la mano.
Our Bap smal Mission
January 10, 2016
BAPTISM OF THE LORD
We o en “stand in line” for everything - at the airport, super market, movie
theater, MVA, vo ng booth, restaurants… the list goes on and on. Standing in
line is one of the places where we are all equal, no ma er or level of educa on
or income. We all know the response to those who try to cut line or jump ahead
of the line. Interes ngly enough, Jesus also stood in line for His own bap sm.
Before His bap sm, Jesus was largely unknown. St. John announced Him as the
Messiah, making His bap sm part of His epiphany as He came into the spotlight.
St. John’s bap sm was a bap sm of repentance. Jesus had no need of that. But
the people did - hundreds, maybe thousands, came to repent. The religious and
social leaders refused to step into such water. They didn’t want to be seen with
sinners or to recognize themselves as sinners. Jesus was not ashamed to step in
and stand in line, shoulder to shoulder with sinners. Here, Jesus’ public ministry
began with an act of humility, compassion and solidarity, as He took upon
Himself all our sins as a symbol and a foretaste of what His work was all about.
He wanted to show solidarity with all who are in need of healing. He became like
us so we could become like Him. He began to gather His lambs in need of
salva on. His bap sm wasn't a private moment of revela on and blessing, but a
public commissioning to redemp on.
The Holy Spirit we receive in Bap sm and all sacraments is not a private, spiritual
event but a public tes mony of our faith, a responsibility and an affirma on that
through Bap sm we don’t just belong to the Church; we are the Church.
The ins tu onal presence of the Church is expressed in official statements and
councils. But there is another presence of the Church that exists wherever
Chris ans may be and make a living. If you and I are there, then the Church is
there and Christ has in us an ambassador, a dimension of our Bap sm that we
might easily forget or consider unimportant.
Careers come to an end. Rela onships come and go. People move from one
place to another. We all go through many life changes - from health to sickness,
from wealth to less wealth, etc.. What endures is the mission we received in our
Bap sm to be the representa ves of Christ in our daily life. What have we done
with that voca on, with that grace and honor? Do we remember that the
bap smal mission remains with us throughout our life me? That call is s ll
there, permanently and irrevocably.
If our Bap smal mission has been dormant,
this year is a good me to bring it back to life.
It is always ready to spring forth, for the
commission to do the work of Christ lasts as
long as we do.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
“Karen, Pa , and Jimmy had a problem. They were
coordina ng the Catholic Chari es Christmas Angel
Tree program, where generous people ‘adopt’ and
provide Christmas presents for children in need.
With a week to go, 300 children s ll needed
‘adop ng’! With Msgr. Enzler’s help, Karen, Pa ,
and Jimmy reached out to the Archdiocesan
community – would people Walk with Francis to
support these kids? Yes! In six days, all children had been ‘adopted’
and thousands of dollars donated.” At St. Rose, we do the same with
our Gi ing Tree. How beau ful to see so many people recognize that
mercy is a loving response to the needs of others! Learn more at
