St. Rose of Lima Parish Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima In Christ, We are Bread for one another: Broken… we gather. Nourished… we reach out. ………………….....……………………………. En Cristo, Somos Pan para cada uno: Lo Dividimos… nos juntamos. Alimentados… tendemos la mano. The Holy Spirit - Our Guide Now & Always May 15, 2016 PENTECOST Pentecost is a great feast because it is the “birthday of the Church.” The reading from the Acts of the Apostles recounts how tongues of fire descended on the Apostles. They were then able to speak in different languages, a gi of ample communica on, a kind of prophecy of the Church today that preaches the Gospel and celebrates liturgy in all the known languages of the human race. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus transmits to His Apostles the gi of the Holy Spirit, enabling them to con nue His ministry of forgiving sin. Jesus brought our world the gi of forgiveness of sin. He knew that forgiveness would be needed in every genera on. The people He forgave in His earthly life were only the beginning. In the Gospel, He gives His disciples the power to complete His work. What the Master began, the disciples are finishing. In today’s second reading from Romans, St. Paul describes the mul ple ways the Holy Spirit transforms our inner life. The Holy Spirit enables us to live with a depth of connec on to God that is not naturally possible on our own. The Holy Spirit illuminates our mind to recognize the truth. The Holy Spirit can warm the coldness of hearts distanced from God and others. The Holy Spirit can cleanse us and set us free from difficult memories and a burdening past. The Holy Spirit can burn out evil from our hearts to leave space for the grace of God. The Holy Spirit is compared to breath. Jesus breathes on the apostles, sending His own Spirit into them. The Holy Spirit is like blood in the body that brings the oxygen of Christ’s grace to every limb and member to keep it strong and holy. The Holy Spirit can make us powerful instruments of Christ’s grace to people around us. The Holy Spirit reminds us of everything Jesus called us to be. Finally, the Holy Spirit gives daily growth to fidelity. Some mes, the Holy Spirit can come with a torrent of power to eliminate what is obsolete and a barrier to love and the Gospel today. The Holy Spirit has been called the “soul of the Church.” We all have seen pictures of our younger days. Our bodies have changed in all kinds of ways. Yet our soul provides the con nuity so that the person we see in the photograph of years ago is s ll ourselves. The same is true of the Church. Many externals of the Church have changed and will change. The con nui es in the Church that make it the iden cal community Jesus founded are preserved by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will always guide us and the Church to what is in accord with Christ’s will. Friends will leave us. Allies may abandon us. Problems may try us. The Holy Spirit remains with us as our link to Christ and to His Church. He is as close to us as the bea ng of our heart. 11701 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20878-1024 PHONE: 301-948-7545 FAX: 301-869-2170 EMERGENCIES (A er Hours): 301-355-8191 CANCELLATION INFORMATION: x307 WEBSITE: www.strose-parish.org EUCHARIST / EUCARISTÍA Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Monday-Friday................................... 8:30 am (English) 1er Viernes ........................................ 7:00 pm (Español) Sunday............................................... 7:15 am (English) 1er Dimanche................................... 10:00 am (Français) 2nd Sunday ........................................ 5:00 pm (Tagalog) Church / Iglesia Saturday Vigil ..................................... 5:00 pm (English) Sunday...................................... 8:45 am (English + ASL) ........................................................ 11:15 am (English) Domingo ........................................... 1:00 pm (Español) RECONCILIATION / RECONCILIACIÓN Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Thursday........................ 7:00-9:00 pm (English/Español) Church / Iglesia Saturday ..................................... 4:00-4:30 pm (English) Domingo .................................... 2:15-3:15 pm (Español) BAPTISM PREPARATION / PREPARACIÓN PARA BAUTIZO Bap sm Classes Begin while pregnant or awai ng adop on.
