NEWMAN SAYS “THANK YOU”
It is with many thanks that we acknowledge the
parishioners of Old Mission for their generous donations
on for the Newman Catholic Center on April 16 & 17th. We
sincerely wish we were able to thank each of you. Your
support for this ministry is a vote of confidence in the
young adults who are the future of the Church and our
communities. A student’s hunger for faith, for community
and for service is both a source of great hope and a treasure
for our Church. You will be remembered in the hearts and
prayers of the Newman Community. May Christ grant you
peace and continue to bless the parish family of Old Mission.
With much gratitude and prayers,
Fr. John Ulrich, S.M., Director,
and the Students and Staff of the Newman Catholic Community
Sponsored by the Catholic Daughters of America.

Got Compassion?
When Mary woke up to a doorbell that terrible Sunday morning she
didn’t know her life would change forever. Her 20 year daughter did
not come home the night before and the police officers were outside
her door to inform her that Lydia was in a fatal automobile accident
at 2:30am. The trauma of a child’s death is overwhelming. Even
though Lydia’s older brother was estranged from his sister, he tried
to be present for his mother, he and his three children were dealing
with their own complex grief. Mary’s friend told her about the grief
counseling at Catholics Charities. Over the course of the next ten
months, Catholic Charities Mental Health Service provide multiple
sessions for Mary, her son, his wife, and their children. It takes time
to live through the grief process and the many complicated issues
that emerge in the process. The skilled clinicians at Catholic Charities
listened with compassion and helped sort out the feelings along the
road to healing. Please remember this family and others like them,
during the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal, May 14/15.
Retreat Offering: “Resting Deep in the Faith”
Jesus said, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some
rest.” Mark 6:31. Our culture speeds along full of confusion and noise,
which numbs us and leaves us spritually famished. So get off the
“hamster wheel,” settle down, and focus on the important things
in life! Join Fr. Jeffrey “Skip” Thompson, MSA, for a 5 day, 4 night
retreat in the cloister of the old Mission San Antonio in Jolon, CA.
May 19-23, 2016. For information on the program, costs and deadline
for registration email: [email protected]. Or call him directly
at: 916-710-1991. Conference topics include: Resting in the fact of
Jesus Christ; Desire and vision for life; Resting in the reasonableness
of faith; Confidence in the Church and the Scriptures; Divine
encounter with God via the Eucharist; the Relief of Sanctity; Saints
allied with us… and much more. Space is limited.

R
EFLECTION OF THE WEEK
May 1, 2016
Sixth Sunday of Easter
In this Gospel, Jesus prepared his
disciples for his return to God.
Jesus promised them that the Holy
Spirit would live within them and
provide strength and courage. The
Spirit would always be available
to help them as a counselor and
advocate. Through the Spirit,
they would recall the words and
teachings of Jesus and even come
to understand these things in a
way that they could not before.
In addition the disciples would
receive peace from the Spirit.
The peace of the Spirit would be
a “shalom” kind of peace which
provided a special inner serenity.
Reflection question:
Adults: What difference has it made in
your life when you made a decision
in accord with Jesus’ teaching?
Children: When will you have to
make a decision this week? What
will help you make a good decision?
Reflection and questions from RCL Benziger.

welcomes the month
of May with activities
honoring Mary, the
mother of Jesus. On
Monday, May 2, we will celebrate

flowers near Mary’s shrine throughout
the Living Rosary. It always seems
as though she is truly among us
whenever we pray this way. Please
know that you are invited to join us
in praying the rosary and honoring
Mary, as we ask her to pray with us.

Sexto Domingo de Pascua
Muchísimas felicidades a todos
los niños que están haciendo
su Primera Comunión este fin
de semana. Le pedimos a la
comunidad que siga teniéndolos
presentes en sus oraciones.
En horabuena.
L DON DE PAZ
E

A
a nosotros”.
respeta situaciones personales y particulares.
