Dear Parishioners:
Letter From The Pastor
It’s that time of year again with cool autumn evenings when walks around the
block are refreshing. Of course, in Texas, we are about three weeks or so behind
the times. Football reigns supreme and our teams strive to play well and bring home
the bacon even if there isn’t any.
As a service to many parishioners, I am printing this list to help you be familiar
with the sport.
 Quarterback Sneak - Church members quietly leaving during the invocation.
 Draw Play - What many children do with the bulletin during worship.
 Halftime - The period between Sunday School and worship when many choose to leave.
 Benchwarmer - Those who do not sing, pray, kneel, or apparently do anything at all but sit.
 Backfield-in-Motion - Making a trip to the back (restroom or water fountain) during the
service.
 Staying in the Pocket - What happens to a lot of money that should be put in the collection
plate.
 Two-Minute Warning - The point at which you realize the service is almost over and begin to
gather up your children and belongings.
 Instant Replay - When the preacher loses his notes and falls back to using last week's
sermon.
 Sudden Death - What happens to the attention span of the congregation if the preacher goes
into "overtime".
 Trap - You're called on to lead the next prayer and are asleep.
 End Run - Getting out of church quickly, without speaking to any guest or fellow members.
 Flex Defense - The ability to allow absolutely nothing said during the sermon to affect your
life.
 Halfback Option - The decision of 50% of the congregation not to return for the evening
service.
 Blitz - The rush for the restaurants following the closing prayer.
As you can see, sports do have connections with religion.
I want to call your attention to a wonderful talk by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks at a Humanum
Colloquium convened by Pope Francis. He titles his talk, The Love that Brings New Life into the World,

Elementary Faith Formation
St. Vincent de Paul Life Teen's Mission is to bring teens into
a relationship with Christ and his Church. We seek not
merely to educate about the faith but to create Missionary
Disciples for the Kingdom of God. Through our focus on
prayer, the Sacraments, and fellowship through relational
ministry, we seek to brings teens into the fullness of Christ
and to put them on the path to becoming the person that
Christ created them to be. To Register for the 2015-2016

The Lord’s Day Program is a faith formation program for
children 2 years old through 5 years old. You may choose
the 9:00 AM or the 11:00 AM class, and they meet in the
Primary School Building.
The CCE Program provides faith formation for children in
grades 1 through 8. We also have a class for children
with special needs. CCE meets 10:30AM - 12:00Noon in
the Primary, Intermediate and Middle School Buildings
and the Msgr. Jamail Family Center.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PREPARATION: In order to be
ready to start preparation for First Holy Communion, students must complete one full year of Catholic Education,
beginning no sooner than First Grade. This requirement
may be satisfied by attendance at CCE, Catholic School, or
Home School (provided the curriculum consists of daily
Catholic Education).

St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School will host two open houses for
prospective new students and their parents. The open houses will
be on Sunday, October 11, 2015 and Sunday, November 8, 2015
in the Monsignor Jamail Family Center at 2:30pm. There will be a
welcome meeting, a video, a tour of the school and curriculum

(SVDPYA), we strive to live out our Catholic faith in
both word and deed. We achieve this goal through our
service, spiritual formation, and social events in support
of one another, our community, and the Church as a

mass and dinner (except for the 1st Tuesday of the

Hospital Architect Needed
Fr. John Ugobueze has begun a multi-year project to
build a high quality, western-style hospital in a rural area
of Nigeria. Right now he needs an Architect and/or Project Engineer with experience in Hospital design and
construction to volunteer their expertise. Fr. John is living
with us here at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. He is serving
as Chaplain at the DeBakey Houston VA Hospital.
Before he arrived in Houston, early in his vocation Fr.
John served as pastor of a rural Nigerian parish where he
personally worked with countless poor, sick, disabled and
mentally disabled parishioners who often suffered serious
illnesses. Some suffered painful deaths because quality
medical services were too far away or too expensive. This
hospital project has the blessing of the Nigerian
Archbishop of Onitsha, Anambra State.
Please volunteer to help Fr. John in moving this work
of mercy closer to becoming a reality. You may leave a

Adult Life Ministries
Senior Bus Trip The next bus trip is scheduled for October 14 when we shall go to Waco to visit the Armstrong
Browning Library and the Bear Pit on the Baylor University Campus and then have lunch at the Olive Branch Café
near Spice Village. We will see the longest single-span
suspension bridge west of the Mississippi, tour the Dr. Pepper Museum and visit the Mammoth National Monument
as time permits. Boarding will be at at 6:30 am. Besides
lunch on your own the cost of the trip will be $10.00.
Outreach for the Homeless; an opportunity for service
to the poor Would you like to join a group of our parishioners who serve the homeless at the Beacon once a
month? One group goes on the third Friday and another
group goes on the second Monday of the month. You are
welcome to join either or both. To go at their scheduled
times the groups meet near the main church entrance at
9:45; and go together either by car or bus/train so they are
ready to check in at 10:45. They work from 11:00 – 2:00
to help serve the noon meal and clean the kitchen or work
in the laundry. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes, long pants,
and simple shirt are recommended for wear. If you would
like to join a group or start another one, please notify
Elaine to learn the details and qualifications for service.
NEW - John XXIII Study Group Tomorrow is the first
day for the new John XXIII Study Group to meet. If you
are interested in growing your relationship with God
within a world seemingly broken through conflicting
views of religion and morality, come to this study group
named after a pope who initiated the Second Vatican
Council to help us see the world with new eyes. By revisiting Vatican II Pope Francis is again sowing new seeds
for renewed visions of the Church. That is why this study
group will begin by focusing on topics coming through
news from the Vatican and the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops. Besides Vatican II documtents,
Scripture, and the Catholic Catechism the group will use
as its primary resources the timely news from the World
Meeting of Families held in Philadelphia and the Bishops’
Synod in Rome. These will give a jump start to initial
topics for discussions; however, participants also may
present other topics as time goes on. Because confidentiality is emphaticaly stressed, there is no topic off limits.
Come in, have a cup of coffee, and join us on Mondays
from 10:00 – 11:30 in Room 208A of the MJFC. The
first meeting is September 28.
English Teacher Needed A number of people have expressed an interest in learning English. If you would be
interested in teaching such a course, please let Elaine

for an hour and a half one day a week. Although the
teachers are not paid, they are greatly rewarded by having
students who want to learn and show their appreciation.

Art Class The Art class taught by Francine Doan on
Thursdays at 1:00pm will begin this fall with learning
how to mix colors. They meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month. All are welcome.
Opening Doors: Grief Support All who
have experienced a loss due to death of a
loved one, divorce, or other traumatic experience are invited to attend Opening
Doors, a series of six meetings that began
last week. The group will continue meeting on Tuesdays from 10:00 – 11:30 am in
MJFC 205 and all are free.

The CCC of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston provides pastoral and sacramental ministry for patients in the
Medical Center and other selected area hospitals. The
Pastoral Assistants (PA) is a very important part of the
CCC Ministry. The PA formation process is four months
in length and a new series of Classes will begin Thur.,
Jan. 7, 7-9pm. For information and to apply call Rebecca

What better way to come to know Jesus Christ than to
start with His Divine Mercy which He so abundantly
pours out upon us. Everyone is invited to come and be
renewed, trusting in His Divine
Mercy. Join the Divine Mercy
Study Group Monday, 78:30pm, MJFC Library for
our weekly gathering. The
goal of the study group is to
examine deeper the message of
mercy as given to us by Jesus
Christ through the writings of
Saint Maria Faustina in her
Diary. The group focuses on
the Doctrines of the Catholic Church on Divine Mercy.
We study the Diary of St. Maria Faustina, Sacred
Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We
center our prayer using the Divine Mercy Chaplet and
place a special emphasis on the Eucharist in our lives. In
addition to our prayer and study, we also make time to
discuss the movement of the Holy Spirit within the lives

On September 27, the Church celebrates the
feast of St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent said
that “Love is inventive to infinity.” The
members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
are on the front line in laboring for the poor, they are
among the first to know their real needs. In August,
through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was
able to assist 36 families or single persons, providing
$5138 in rent, $1434 in utilities, $250 in food, $272 in
traveler's aid, and $54 in donated school supplies. In addition, our parish conference contributed $1500 for aid to the
Memorial Day flood victims in our immediate area. This
program is being administered by the Archdiocesan Office
of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. God Bless You!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
At first glance, the situation of the penitents in the early
church is shocking: isolated and labeled, their journey
back to fellowship at the Lord’s table seems arduous and
even cruel. However, at no time in the process were the
penitents lacking the support of the community. Penances
were performed for all to see, and we can tell from the
homilies of the day that people earnestly desired to see
the sinner benefit from the remedy. Tertullian reminded
the penitents that they were living among their brothers
and sisters, fellow servants of the same Lord, still in the
embrace of the Spirit. He tells them that when they extend
their hands in blessing to the faithful, it is Christ they
touch. He tells them that when they see tears in the eyes
of believers, it is Christ who is interceding for them with
the Father. There is a treasure of our tradition woven into
this history: these people knew profoundly that the prayer
of Christ’s body, the church, was the prayer of Christ
himself. Prayer was not merely support for a person down
on his or her luck; it was effective and necessary. The
treasure we can see even through the tangles of history is
this: the Spirit of God is poured out on the church, and
brings grace, forgives sin, makes us holy, and always

LOS DE ADENTRO Y LOS DE AFUERA
Desde el Concilio Vaticano II a los católicos se les ha orientado hacia una conciencia más profunda al
llamado universal a la santidad arraigada en el bautismo. Sabemos ahora que este llamado a la santidad, que
creíamos que solamente nosotros los católicos poseíamos, ahora sabemos que se aplica a todos los bautizados. La
división entre los seguidores del Señor Jesús ha existido desde el comienzo mismo del cristianismo. Los apóstoles
se quejaron a Jesús de que otras personas, fuera de su
círculo, estaban expulsando a los demonios en nombre del
Señor. Jesús puso las cosas en claro al decirles que “el que
no está contra nosotros está con nosotros”. Imagínate cómo
sería el mundo si dejáramos las divisiones existentes entre
nosotros y trabajaríamos juntos, inspirados por Dios, para
llevar la paz y la justicia a los necesitados.
UNIDAD Y EL LLAMADO A LA SANTIDAD
En el Evangelio de San Juan, el Señor pronuncia un
discurso final en el que ora para que sus discípulos y todos
los que lo siguen sean uno. Es una triste realidad que, en un
mundo marcado por la división, hasta los bautizados en
Jesucristo con frecuencia no pueden trabajar juntos para construir el Reino de Dios. Muchas veces esperamos que
los dirigentes de las iglesias cristianas emprendan la obra de la unidad cristiana. Ese trabajo, en realidad, empieza
en nuestros hogares, vecindarios, escuelas, organizaciones cívicas y centros de trabajo. En el Evangelio de hoy el
Señor le dice a sus seguidores que deben cortar cualquier parte de su cuerpo que los induzca al pecado. La Iglesia
—el Cuerpo de Cristo— algunas veces necesita mirarse a sí misma para saber si hay algo que es necesario cortar.
La desunión es quizás una de esas cosas que necesitamos cortar para reflejar más plenamente el rostro de Cristo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Jesús dice a sus
discípulos: “Les aseguro que no quedará sin recompensa el
que les dé de beber un vaso de agua por el hecho de que ustedes pertenecen a Cristo” (Marcos 9:41). De esta manera
Jesús muestra ser un buen judío. Existe una vieja tradición
hebrea que relata que Dios premia no sólo a sus santos, los
profetas, sino también a los discípulos del santo, y a quienes
ayudan y alimentan a los profetas o sus discípulos. Así mismo, Dios abre las puertas de su generosidad con los santos y
quienes de una manera u otra están relacionados con dicho
profeta. Nuestro Dios es un Dios generoso, por tal motivo,
ama a quien da con alegría. Los cristianos somos receptores
de la generosidad del Dios de Israel, ya que éste no nos negó
a su propio Hijo. Desde el principio del cristianismo la generosidad de tiempo, talento y dinero han sido la señal palpable
de nuestro amor fraterno. Jesús promete que esta generosidad será premiada en esta vida y en la vida eterna. Seamos

NUESTRO DIOS PRÓDIGO Nos toca volver a aprender una y otra vez cuán pródigo es nuestro Dios. Es como
si Dios no pudiera decir “no”. Por supuesto, que estamos
de acuerdo cuando Dios es pródigo conmigo—rico en
misericordia y perdón, generoso con su gracia. Pero cuando se trata del otro –¿el enemigo, el pecador, el hereje, el
excluído? Pues entonces queremos que Dios sea tan tacaño con esa persona como yo soy. Moisés y Josué también
querían un mundo así de conveniente. Se preguntaban
cómo es que el espíritu de Dios se había posado sobre los
dos que no se aparecieron a la reunión –la Iglesia de hoy.
Y los apóstoles en el Evangelio se quejaron porque habían
unos haciendo milagros que en definitiva no eran seguidores de Jesús. La extensa y libre generosidad de Dios los
confundió a todos. Que así sea, dice Jesús. Por su parte,
ustedes que guían a otros, continúen siendo dignos de su
