The History of the Diocese Monterey
In his article in the May 29th Bulletin, Fr. Russ wrote:
“In recognition of our golden anniversary as an independent
diocese of the central coast, Bishop Garcia has commissioned
a commemorative book titled The History of the Diocese
Monterey. I was able to preview a draft copy of this publication
recently and it will be a beautiful addition to any home library.
The quality of printing and binding is exceptional. The book
contains a full history of the Church in California, our Catholic
schools and religious orders, and an account of the establishment
of every parish our in diocese. The cost of this volume is $35
and it will be available in either English or Spanish. We must preorder, as there will be only one publishing. It would be helpful
to know of your interest. If you notify the parish office that
you wish to receive a copy of The History of the Diocese of
Monterey, we will reserve a copy for you which you may purchase
upon delivery, estimated to be September-October 2016.“

July 24, 2016
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
This Gospel reminds us of three
things. First of all the disciples
asked Jesus how to pray and he
gave them a model we call the Our
Father. Jesus gave the disciples a
form of prayer that praises and
petitions God. Next there was the
example of a friend who came in
the middle of the night to another’s
house asking for bread. The visitor
awoke his friend with a plea for
bread, but the sleeping friend did
not want to be disturbed. Perhaps it
would not be their friendship that
got the first man his loaf of bread,
but his persistence. So, the only
way to continue his night’s sleep
was for the second man to give his
friend the bread. In this parable,
Jesus made clear that we need to be
persistent in prayer. Finally, Jesus
asked what father would hand his
son a snake when asked for a fish,
or a scorpion when asked for an
egg. The point of this illustration
was to show the disciples that God
would give us the most important
gift, the Holy Spirit.

5th Sunday Rosary
Our local Knights of Columbus are again
asking the Community to come together to pray the
Rosary on the 5th Sundays of the month at the Old
Mission. The rosary will be conducted next weekend,
immediately following all the Sunday masses.

St Louis de Montfort Catholic

in a 3-day 40 mile pilgrimage.
We begin Friday, August 5th from
St Louis de Montfort Church in
Santa Maria and arrive at San
Lorenzo Seminary in the Santa Ynez
Valley on Sunday, August 7th.
This is time put aside to grow in
a personal relationship with God
and enhance your Faith. Pope
Francis began this church year
with the theme of “Mercy” and
asks we start with a Pilgrimage.
The Pilgrimage theme and prayer
focus is “God’s Mercy”.
Walk 1, 2 or all 3 days. Some of the

a two-year process with monthly

vio como su hijo mayor, Agustín, le daba la espalda a
su fe cristiana.
Mónica estaba exasperada. Durante años se dio por
vencida de hablar directamente a su hijo siguiendo el
consejo de un obispo de la región que le dijo que era
mejor hablar con Dios sobre Agustín que con Agustín
sobre Dios.
La madre nunca dejó de rezar por su hijo.
Finalmente, Agustín abandonó su rebeldía, fue
bautizado y luego ordenado y nombrado obispo de
Hipona. San Agustín se convirtió en uno de los eruditos
más importantes de la Iglesia.
Las lecturas de hoy destacan la importancia de
la oración persistente. Abraham, a pesar de temer
molestar al Señor, continúa preguntándole sobre el
destino de Sodoma y Gomorra. Jesús, en el Evangelio
según san Lucas, le dice a sus discípulos “pidan y se
les dará, busquen y encontrarán, toquen y se les abrirá”
(Lucas 11:9). Esta es nuestra tarea: seguir rezando.

Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Jornada Mundial de la Juventud Cracovia, “Bienaventurados los
misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia”
Esta semana la Iglesia universal
se encamina solidariamente en oración
hacia la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud
a realizarse en Cracovia, la ciudad
donde fue arzobispo san Juan Pablo
II el fundador de este evento mundial
para jóvenes. El tema de este año de la
Jornada Mundial de la Juventud coincide
con el del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia:
“Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque
ellos alcanzarán misericordia” (Mateo 5:7) El Evangelio
de hoy hace eco al mismo tema, como Jesús une la oración
con la misericordia en “la parábola del Amigo Persistente”.
Jesús nos enseña además de las palabras para orar, aquellas
acciones que deben coincidir con una autentica oración.
Que hermosa es la imagen que Jesús presenta de Dios
en quien se puede confiar hacer aquello que es lo mejor
para nosotros. Un vecino inoportuno que va a despertar
a su amigo e irrumpe en su casa. Aún así surgen bellas
imágenes. La oración perseverante tiene una respuesta
activa, recibe misericordia en panes; recordando de Lucas
la única referencia a la Eucaristía “al partir el pan” (Lucas
24:35, Hechos 2:42). La JMJ16 Cracovia, el Jubileo, y Jesús
de este modo se unen para definir la perfecta oración como
una comunión perseverante con Dios y la misericordia
incondicional hacia nuestro prójimo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Por siglos, Latinoamérica ha desarrollado una larga
tradición religiosa con mitología espléndida. La palabra
“religión” del verbo latín religere significa “atar” o
“enlazar”. Su función es unir seres humanos, los unos con
los otros, con lazos de caridad y justicia. Una vez enlazados
en comunidad, la religión los une al poder divino que rige
el universo.
Entre las culturas andinas se encuentran mitos
religiosos que muestran la importancia de este
enlazamiento. Según la mitología Inca el universo esta
compuesto por tres mundos: el cielo (Janan pacha), la tierra
(Cay pacha) y el bajo tierra (Ucu pacha). Estos tres mundos
están unidos por dos grandes serpientes, Yacú-mama (ríos)
y Sacha-mama (árboles), símbolos de la fecundidad.
Muchos piensan que los mitos son leyendas cuya
función es el entretenimiento. En realidad los mitos no son
fábulas, son historias que explican la verdad profunda del
universo. Nos muestran como unirnos y enlazarnos para
vivir una vida fecunda. En esta época de secularización, los
cristianos no podemos olvidar ni la religión ni la mitología
si queremos dar fruto como Jesús nos lo pide.
