As women, their testimony (regardless of its importance or veracity) was considered unacceptable by the culture in which they lived. Nevertheless, these two women, along with countless other unlikely persons (e.g., Samaritans, foreigners, sinners, tax collectors, the blind, sick, and possessed) are featured in the writings of Luke as important recipients and witnesses to God’s mighty gifts. This weekend’s Gospel highlights Elizabeth’s question (“who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”), which underscores not only the divine predilection for the least members of society but also the awesome reality of Jesus’ Incarnation. As “spokesperson for all humankind” in this instance, Elizabeth’s “who am I?” marvels at the unlikely idea of the infinite God taking on finite flesh and blood in order to live and die among His people. Elizabeth’s question also invites the hearers of today’s passage to appreciate God’s presence in Jesus (within Mary) from another perspective. The story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth appears to be modeled on an Old Testament narrative, whose author described David’s transfer of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. Recall the fact that, for Israel, the Ark was understood to be the site of God’s presence among His people. Elizabeth’s question “who am I?” is remarkably similar to that of King David, who once said “how can the Ark of the Lord come to me?” (2 Samuel 6:9). Just as Mary journeyed to Judah and was greeted with joy there by Elizabeth and remained there with her for three months, so too the Ark was brought with joy to the house of Obed-Edom where it remained for three months. By means of this comparison, Luke shows that the presence of God signaled by the Ark of the Covenant in the Hebrew Scriptures has become a visible and tangible reality in Jesus. He is Emmanuel, God with us, that we might have life. As we wind down the Advent season and now immediately prepare for Christmas, Elizabeth’s question “who am I?” calls each of us to ponder anew the gift of God’s presence among us, in the least likely places, in the least likely people, and in the most unlikely ways, until He comes again! Come Lord Jesus! Loubriel TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in midDecember were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift-giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. Sacred Steps Sacramental Celebrations at Church of the Little Flower Congratulations to our Baptized: Adrian Rodriguez Perez Valentino Jesús Rojo Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2012 Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. — Luke 1:42 MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith. Congratulations and God’s Blessings to those Joined in Holy Matrimony: Rafael Frometa and Cristina Etzold Dessert with Father Davis As a way to foster community and provide a forum to get to know one another better, the New Year will include a periodic special evening of fellowship entitled, “Dessert with Father Davis.” You bring a dessert. Father will provide the coffee. It will be a chance to chat, socialize, dream about parish life, and have a delightful visit over dessert and coffee at the rectory house. The dining room table has limited seats; there’s only room for ten parishioners at a time. So, call Maria Elena Chialastri at 305-446-9950 to secure your space. The first occasion will take place on Monday, January 28th at 7:30pm. We encourage those still interested in purchasing a memorialized brick, at $100 per brick, to do so before January 4th, 2013, as the price will be increased. This is as result of the cost involved in having the contractor come out to remove and install all the new orders we have been receiving. The new price will be announced soon. Please contact Wayne Carter at the Parish Office, # 305-446-9950, to place your order as soon as possible. We thank everyone for their support and look forward to accommodating those who would still like to participate. God Bless you all. Christmas is a time to think about all that has been given to you and your responsibility to share your wealth with those less fortunate, it is a time for giving. Like every year, the Christmas Giving Tree has been placed in the Lobby of our Church. We ask you to open your hearts to the number of children and families whom we can help with your generosity. Please place your wrapped gifts, labeled boy/girl and appropriate age under the tree. A Pilgrimage to France, Spain and Portugal in August Let’s try it again. Another summertime pilgrimage opportunity for all parishioners, including families who would like to enjoy the structure of an organized group tour. On August 111, Father Davis will lead a pilgrimage to Lourdes, Santiago de Compostela, Fatima, and Lisbon. Gorgeous landscape, history, culture, food, fellowship, and prayer. A great combination as summer draws to a close before the start of school. Brochures will soon be ready. Get your name on the list at the Development Office today! A Life Size Nativity Scene at Little Flower? Admiring the beautiful manger scene on Alhambra Circle that annually brings alive the true meaning of Christmas, it occurs to many of us that “this is actually OUR story.” Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could annually have a LIFE SIZE Nativity Scene on the front lawn of Comber Hall to publicly announce Christmas tidings, and serve as a source of inspiration for many to reawaken faith in Jesus? We are currently looking into companies and prices. Although it would be expensive, it would be a spiritual investment well worth making. Hopefully, if enough people respond in support of this initiative, we could have it in place for Christmas 2013. If you care to be a sponsor or contributor to the Nativity Scene project, contact Father Davis.
