“Shake off the dust.”
So often I speak with individuals who are frustrated by,
if not disappointed in, the behavior and actions of others.
Yes, we surely know that there is a lot of brokenness in our
world, even within our own families and among our own
friends. Indeed, the effects of original sin are manifold
around us. People, of course, are free to make choices, and
we will surely be disappointed in some outcomes. Yet,
with maturity we must realize that there is simply no
perfection this side of the grave. We strive, and we should
help others to strive to do what is right and good.
Admittedly, though, it does seem to be much easier to
notice the flaws of those around us, rather than to take
stock of our own lives.
In one memorable Gospel passage Jesus tells his
disciples to remove the plank in one’s own eye first before
seeking to remove the speck of dust in the eye of our
neighbor. Our personal journey along the road of Christian
conversion challenges us to do what we can do to enhance
the quality of our own lives first. Then we will be in
position to help another. We simply can’t control the
actions of other people; we have to begin by controlling
our own behavior. Starting with ourselves, the man or
woman in the mirror, and our own sphere of influence is
the point of departure. In the final analysis, the rest is mere
dust, a sure distraction.
I think we frequently complicate our lives more than
they need to be, when we become absorbed in the flaws of
others. We are tempted to be distracted by the limitations
and foibles of others, and then we lose track of our own
need for change and personal growth. In our journey of
faith we must focus on the things that really matter in life,
the things that help us along the road to holiness and
discipleship. This includes focusing on people that can
complement our faith journey, as opposed to those that
might detract from it. When the Gospel of truth is
preached, shared, and lived, sometimes it is accepted;
sometimes it is rejected. We cannot demand that people
believe. We must inspire people to have faith. Rather than
require, we must inspire. The choice to respond will be
theirs. And so will the consequences be. Even Jesus
preached in a certain locale. He did what He could do. For
those who listened and understood, their lives we bettered
as a result. For those that rejected His message, he taught
His disciples how to handle it: to “shake off the dust” from
their sandals. We can only do what we can do.
We cannot control everything. We can only be true to
the Spirit’s impulse on our hearts. Faithfulness to Christ
and His message is our primary objective. We can only
present the Gospel, free of charge, authentically lived, as
inspired by the Spirit. It’s enough to do our part. Others
must step up and do theirs. If they don’t, we can’t control
that. That’s their responsibility. Ours is to be faithful to the
truth, to do what we can do, and continue the journey
toward holiness. Don’t allow anyone to take that away
from you. Don’t allow the clutter of negative influences to
bring you down. “Shake off the dust.”

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 15, 2012
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.
Psalm 85:12
GOD CHOSE US
Who chose first, God or you? That is the question
explored in today’s three readings. The second reading,
from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, reads almost like a
hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to
serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it
clear how honored we are and how special is the call to
live as children of God. This is through no doing of our
own.
The first reading and the Gospel use prose rather
than poetry to describe the same truth: God did the
choosing, not us. When the prophet Amos was berated
for being a prophet, he retorted that the whole thing
wasn’t his idea in the first place. Neither did the twelve
apostles in today’s Gospel ask for their calling. Jesus sent
them forth, two by two, to do the work of his kingdom.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Does the scene of the disciples being sent out two
by two bring to mind any other scripture? After the
flood, Noah opens the door of the ark and sends his
passengers out to renew the face of the earth. Certainly,
Jesus has the same purpose. The purpose is fulfilled in
your communion in the Body of Christ today, and in
your being sent from the Eucharist into the world. The
sending is so important that our word “Mass” derives
from it. In Latin, the last words of worship are Ite, missa
est, which means “Go, you are sent.” From that, people
began to call Catholic worship the missa, or in English,
the “Mass.” Our English words dismissal, missal,
emissary, and mission are all related. We are not sent
into the workday world alone, but in relationship to one
another.
Some people have acquired the unhappy habit of
leaving worship as soon as they receive Communion
and therefore miss the prayer, the dismissal, and the
solemn blessing that are essential parts of the Mass. The
dismissal is a seal on our Communion and reveals its
purpose. Thanks be to God!

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION
Our theme for the 2012 Collection echoes the
recent announcement of Pope Benedict XVI being a
special “Year of Faith.” The theme is “Faith: Anchored in Jesus, Alive in Mission.”
We evangelize by the witness of our faith and by
our sacrifice for the Black and Indian Missions. Remember, be anchored in Jesus, alive in Mission! Together we build up the Church and announce the
Good News of Jesus Christ.
Please give generously to this appeal.
Religious Education Office
The Religious Education Office is looking for catechists
who feel a calling to share their Catholic faith by teaching in
the Religious Education program for the 2012-2013 CCD
year. Please prayerfully consider volunteering as a teacher
or a substitute teacher for children in 3rd to 5th grades. You
may download the application at www.cotlf.org or pick an
application in the parish office. Complete applications can
be returned to the parish office. The Director of Religious
Education will contact you for an interview mid-August.
God bless you!
A Pilgrimage to ITALY
Father Davis will be leading a 9-day pilgrimage to the beautiful country of ITALY from March 15 to March 23, 2013.
Staying in four-star hotels, the trip is scheduled to visit Assisi, Florence, Rome, Vatican City, and Monte Cassino. A
highlight will be attendance at a papal audience in Saint
Peter’s square. Mass will be celebrated each day, including
one inside Saint Peter’s Basilica. To get your name on the
list, please contact Wayne Carter at our Development office.
Brochures will be available in a couple of weeks.
Gaudium! Joy!
“To be a Catholic should be something liberating.
Something fun. We aren’t puritans are we? Joy is what
attracts people to the Church.” –Cardinal Timothy Dolan of
New York, President of the USCCB.
It is with great joy that we announce the start of fulltime youth ministry here at the Church of the Little
Flower! While the ministry will be multi-faceted, the primary component will be Gaudium, the new youth group of
the parish, set to start meeting around the beginning of the
new school year. Taking its name from the Latin for “joy,”
Gaudium will be a fun, faith-centered and service-oriented
gathering of our youth – a true expression of the enthusiastic and joyful energy that is characteristic of the youth of
the Church. Meeting dates and times are still pending so
check the weekly bulletins or follow the youth group on
Twitter at @GaudiumCOTLF for more details and announcements!
Installation of Brick Patio
Whew! We have a final design and the permitting
requirements satisfied. Barring any last minute surprises,
our project should be completed toward the end of July.
What a process for a relatively simple project.
A special thank you to all who have participated and there
is still room for others interested in doing so. It’s going to
be a beautiful testimony of community and a lasting memory for all to appreciate.
Please contact Wayne Carter at the Parish Office, (305)
446-9950. God Bless.
INVITATION!
As it had been previously announced, our new
Website is about to be launched and we are very
excited about this venture. Hence, we are inviting
parishioners wishing to advertise on the site, to do
so. The cost is a mere $50 per month, payable annually or every six months. At this time we can comfortably accommodate twelve requests.
Those interested, please contact Wayne Carter at
the Parish Office (305)446-9950, for more details.
Next Healing Mass
A “Healing Mass,” which will include the bestowal of the
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, is scheduled for
Wednesday, August 22nd, at 7:30pm in the church. Multiple priests will be joining us, as we pray for healing and
spiritual sustenance. Anyone who’s seriously or terminally
ill, facing surgery, or burdened by the weight of the passing of years, is especially invited to join to be present.

Decimoquinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

La fidelidad brotó en la tierra
y la justicia vino del cielo.
Salmo 85(84):12
