CATHOLIC CHURCH 25511 Eshelman Avenue, Lomita (310) 326-3364 smmlomita.org ctáàÉÜËá VÉÜÇxÜ 2 Fr. Paul O’Donnell Dear Friends and Families of St. Margaret Mary’s, his past week we celebrated the graduation of our St. Margaret Mary eighth grade students. A graduation is both an ending and a beginning: an end to childhood and an opening to adolescence and then adulthood. T Nou o matter what age we have reached in r lives, we can all still relate to the hopes, dreams and fears our graduates have. Why? Because we remember our own hopes, dreams and fears as they have been realized or not through the years. So, the day of our graduation is a very important milestone in our passage to full maturity and to becoming the persons God wants us to be. Ultimately, a graduation could be a symbol for the whole journey of life, as some day we all hope to “graduate” from this earthly existence to eternal life with God in heaven. Think for a moment about the eight years many of our SMMS children have spent with us. They not only grew physically taller and bigger, but they grew intellectually through their studies, they grew morally in their understanding of right and wrong and most importantly, they grew spiritually in their faith. O ur school reinforced the faith they received at home from their primary teachers, their parents. Their parents struggled, saved, and sacrificed much in order to provide an excellent Catholic education that will serve as the foundation for their future lives. It is a fact that the graduates of St. Margaret Mary’s School not only go on to attend the top universities but they go on to great things in their lives. They become great people; that is, fully human beings, caring and responsible citizens of the community as well as holy members of the Church. God has a plan for their future lives that goes well beyond the nervousness of facing high school. As we all have experienced, He will always be there, guiding them every step of the way. Even if they, enamored of the world and its beauties, lose sight of Him for a time, He will never be far from them, always ready to answer their prayers and lead them safely back home. M y personal appeal to our graduates was simple: “Never forget God. Never forget Jesus and Mary. Never forget where you come from—St. Margaret Mary’s.” Words to live by, surely. For beyond a graduation ceremony, the purpose of our lives is to know, love and serve God so we might be happy with Him in heaven forever. That’s where the real, never-ending graduation party will begin! With prayers and friendship, Fr. Paul PASTOR: Fr. Paul O’Donnell ASSOCIATE PASTORS: Fr. Juan Silva and Fr. Nunca olvides a Jesús y María. Con oraciones y amistad, Padre Paul 4 O U R F A I T H I N A C T I O N ALL IS GRACE MASS AND SOCIAL This monthly bilingual Mass and Social brings together those who have loved ones in prison. Through prayer and sharing, we open ourselves to God’s healing. Tuesday, June 16th, 7 PM St. Joseph Catholic Church 11901 Acacia Ave., Hawthorne THE CHURCH AND THE SPIRIT Where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; and where the Spirit of God is, there is the Church and all grace, and the Spirit is truth. —St. Irenaeus On Sundays in Ordinary Time, the Old Testament reading is selected for the light it sheds on the day’s Gospel. Today, Ezekiel sees God lifting up the lowly tree and making the withered tree bloom. So in the second paraable of today’s Gospel, Jesus encourages us by promising that, as fragile seeds grow into an abundant harvest, and the tiny mustard seed into a hearty plant, so God will grow the kingdom from small beginnings to an instrument of salvation for all. In the first parable, the land yields fruit “of its own accord” (Mark 4:28). Not only is the initiative God’s, but the parable teaches that the seed’s growth, though invisible at first, is actually unstoppable! To be sure, those who depend on the impressive or dramatic in order to be convinced or encouraged will be disappointed in the slow unfolding of the kingdom that Jesus announces. But for those who do accept the kingdom, all is grace, and that grace is certain. Though the second reading is not coordinated with either the first reading or Gospel on these Sundays, today’s is thematically appropriate. Saint Paul argues that our experience of God’s trustworthiness thus far should make us a people of undaunted courage and unshakeable faith. But at the same time Paul warns that faith should also make us aware of our responsibility to do good. “LEARNING FROM THE MYSTICS: SAINT FRANCIS and SAINT CLARE” Saturday, June 20 9 AM—12 Noon Loyola Marymount University University Hall 3999 McIntosh Room 1 LMU Drive Los Angeles Journey with St. Francis and St. Clare during the morning of reflection and prayer and let these saints inspire you. $25 per person (310) 338-2799 for more info. A spiritual director is a companion on the journey who enables you to tune in to your deeper self and recognize the still, small voice of God within. Spiritual direction is available for individuals or couples on an on-going basis, meeting about once a month. We have several directors available. In the West, our story is more complicated by constant change and variation. As the world’s structures tottered in the ninth century, bishops and priests stepped into the void left by collapsing civil structures. For the first time, marriage was referred to as a sacrament, and wedding ceremonies were to be in public (assuring the free consent of the bride) after an investigation of the couple by a priest. The custom of the blessing of the bridal room diminished, and was finally forbidden in 1012 by the Council of Rouen, although it continued for centuries. In the diocese of Perigueux in France, a ritual from 1827 had the parish priest clad in surplice and stole sprinkling the bridal couple as they stood modestly in their pajamas by the wedding bed. Next the bed and all those present were sprinkled, too! That’s a tradition that few Americans, either the betrothed or the clergy, are ready to revive! 6 E S P I R I T U A L TENER CONFIANZA Por Humberto Beltrán “Siempre tenemos confianza, aunque vivimos desterrados, lejos del Señor”. 7 STRENGTHENING OUR FAITH Readings For The Week Monday, June 15 Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 6:1-10 Gospel: Matthew 5:38-42 Tuesday, June 16 Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 Gospel: Matthew 5:43-48 Wednesday, June 17 Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 Thursday, June 18 Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 11:1-11 Gospel: Matthew 6:7-15 Friday, June 19 Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 11:18, 21-30 Gospel: Matthew 6:19-23 Saturday, June 20 Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34 Sunday June 21 Reading 1: Job 38:1, 8-11 Reading 2: 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 Gospel: Mark 4:35-41 bâÜ f|v~ Guadalupe VARGAS Jeremy VARGAS Angelina BASSOLS Shirley BUCAG Leticia VALENCIA Chris JOYA Silvia SPINDOLA Eddy RAMOS Susana GUTIERREZ Matthew CASTILLON Michaelangelo LUPOLI Dolores WOODWARD Veronica CRUZ Dear Lord please bless these sick with comfort, courage, hope and enduring faith in your love and protection. To foster authentic trust with children, it is important that they know that you understand them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by repeating back what children are telling you.
