Artist Reception & Talk
Mexico 1953
Photographs by Roger Hagan
In 1953, at age 19, Californian
Roger Hagan bought a used
Rolleiflex and drove off with a
friend to photograph Mexico,
his first visit abroad. He
returned a second time at the
end of the 1950s. Photographs
from these two trips, never printed until the 21st
century, will be on display at the library in
September. Because of the rich Mexican heritage
found in the valley, Hagan has offered this exhibit
to the St. Helena Public Library. Refreshments will
be served. Following the reception, Hagan will
discuss what the photographs now mean to him.
Hagan's Mexico was, in his own words, “beautiful,
mysterious, and touching.” His photographs
demonstrate what a very young American found
memorable and beautiful about a poor but hopeful
nation, just a generation out of its revolution. In
addition to the exhibit, Hagan’s book of
photographs “Mexico 1953” will be available for
checkout through the library.

TUESDAYS
Four Lectures on Alternate Tuesdays, 5:00-6:30 pm
The Bear & the Eagle: A Half Century of Cold War
Presented by Historian Jay Greene
For nearly 50 years of the last half of the 20th century, the two nuclear-armed superpowers––the Soviet
Union and the United States––and their respective allies engaged in a tense standoff known as the Cold
War. In a four-part lecture series this fall, Jay Greene will describe the major events of the period and
explore answers to the “explosive” question we all want answered: How did we avoid entering a Hot
War with the inevitable exchange of nuclear weapons that could have resulted in a radioactive return to
the Dark Ages? Jay Greene is a respected historian and lecturer who lives in St. Helena.
September 6th: Onset: 1944–1960
September 20th: Deepening Freeze: 1961–1972
October 4th: Détente? 1973–1980
October 18th: The Ice Breaks: 1981–1991
Four recommended films that complement the lectures will be shown on Mondays at 3:00 pm, usually
a day before the lectures. Films will have a short introduction by Robyn Orsini, and will be followed
by discussion and Q&A. The September films are scheduled as follows:
September 12th: The Third Man (1950)
September 19th: On the Beach (1959)
Tuesdays at 10:30 am
Coffee & Culture: A Morning Docu-Series
In September we will show episodes from the James Beard Award-winning series “The Mind of a Chef.”
Come to the library to watch an hour and enjoy a cup of coffee! Synopsis: Enter the kitchen of Chef
Gabrielle Hamilton, best-selling author of Blood, Bones, and Butter and owner of New York City’s famed
restaurant, Prune. 2015; rated TV-PG.
September 6th: “Prune” & “Garbage”
September 13th: “Rome” & “Hunger”
September 20th: “Past” & “Hustle”
September 27th: “Napkin” & “Evolution”
