Summer is a busy time at Bayne Library and Park. There’s the group playing chess by the gazebo, the babies on the swings, the neighbors chatting while their kids listen to story time, the prodigal sons visiting the Library where they learned to read, the skaters thrashing on the ramps, the old friends meeting on the library steps, the kids getting their summer reading prize, the seniors drinking coffee and checking their email, the vacationers finding their beach reads, and the families gathering for movies on blankets under 200-hundred-year old trees; all of it happens, over and over again, all summer long on the Corner of Balph and Teece. Learn more about what’s happening this Summer at Bayne Library and Park in this issue! Ellen Goodman, Library Director [email protected] KIDS, BOOKS, COMMUNITY & MAGIC BEANS by Diane If you’ve ever visited the library on Thursday mornings at 11:00 a.m. and wondered what all the fun is about it’s our weekly, all ages storytime. Just ask two of our “regulars”, Kristen and Charlotte Cooper. Even after moving out of the Bellevue area, these book loving sisters return often to see friends they’ve made at storytime. They know that there will always be stories, songs, crafts and sometime a special activity like when we planted bean seeds in April. And parents know they will find a warm welcoming environment and a place to connect with other parents, grandparents and caregivers. So come join in the fun every Thursday @ 11:00 a.m. and nuture a love of books (and sometimes magic beans). SUMMER FUN AT BAYNE! Nothing says summer like a concert in the park. CLASSICS BOOK CLUB! By Ellen We are starting a Classics Book Club, which begs the question, what is a classic? Dictionary.com defines a classic as, “an author or a literary work of the first rank, especially one of demonstrably enduring quality.” Or to put it in layman’s terms, something you would have read in high school or college. Our first pick is The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Considered by many to be James’s finest work, this novel poignantly captures the anxieties of the fin de siècle generation. So whether you are revisiting a book you read years ago, or reading something new, we hope you will join us on July 28th at 10:30 a.m. for what is sure to be an interesting and enlightening new book group! READ IT BEFORE YOU SEE IT by Cheryl Andy Weir’s self-published The Martian became a best seller and in October it will be released as a major motion picture starring Matt Damon. Weir self-published his debut novel in 2011, then in 2014 Crown Publishing bought the rights and re-released it. The Martian is a first person account of American astronaut, Mark Watney. Watney is part of a manned mission to Mars. The mission must be aborted when a fierce dust storm threatens the safety of the astronaut crew. As the crew races to board the ship, Watney is impaled by an antenna. His fellow astronauts presume him dead and flee the red planet. But Watney survives. Now he must use all his scientific and technical skills to survive on an alien planet for as long as possible. Satellites soon pick up his activity and NASA races against time to save the man they left behind. BOOK REVIEW By Laila Tuffiash I really like the book The Search For Sunken Treasure from the Geronimo Stilton series because it was a really fascinating adventure. Geronimo, his sister Thea, his cousin Trap, and his nephew Benjamin head out to the Ratlapagos Islands to help their Aunt Sweetfur search for her lost husband’s treasure. Soon they find King Cheddarama IV’s treasure, but it turns out there is even more to discover then buried cheese in an ancient Greek amphora. There are many more Geronimo Stilton books. They are all exciting adventures and also really funny. While I love the twists and turns in all the adventures of Geronimo and his friends, I also like learning a little bit of history from each book. If you are reading chapter books and want adventure that isn’t too scary, you should read all the Geronimo Stilton books you can. You can start with The Search For Sunken Treasure or just sign out any Geronimo Stilton book right here at Bayne Library. Volume 1, Issue 2 Page 3 ANDREW BAYNE MEMORIAL LIBRARY 34 N.
