St. Helena Hospital Foundation I 2009 Annual Report
In It Together
It’s a simple equation: Our governments are underfunding health care. The communities with the best medical facilities
are the ones that support them. In this respect, St. Helena Hospital stands as a model of the perfect partnership. Year after
year, the Napa Valley community has come forward to ensure that St. Helena Hospital remains a world-class resource in
one of the world’s great locations. We understand that we have to work together in order to be the best.
There are so many levels of partnership in our organization. The Hospital and its Foundation work in tandem to fund the
best physicians, the latest equipment and the newest technology. Both Hospital doctors and private-sector leaders serve on
our Foundation’s board. Most importantly, you – the members of our local community – give generously and show your
commitment to providing the finest medical care available, right here in our small valley.
As the capstone of our highly successful capital campaign, last October we received the largest private gift ever made to the
Hospital from one of our volunteers. Mabel Johnson’s $8-million estate donation reminds us of how important our mission
is to our community. Our 2009 annual gala set a new record with over $1.5 million raised, nearly 50 percent higher than
our goal. All of this happened during the toughest economic climate we’ve experienced in decades.
As a testament to the quality of our efforts, people are now traveling longer distances to experience the superb quality of
our hospital for joint replacement, cancer treatment, and cardiac care. Our reputation for excellence is spreading. We have
every reason to be proud, and thankful.
Partnership… We couldn’t do it without you. And, in turn, we’re here to help when you or your family needs us.
Sincerely,
Terry Newmyer President & CEO

A Special Pairing
When putting on an event as ambitious as St. Helena Hospital’s annual fall gala, it truly “takes a village.” Never having
chaired such a large event, we were so impressed with the teamwork of the Foundation Board and staff. David Duncan
was particularly generous in offering to host the affair at Silver Oak Cellars. We knew we had partners in every corner.
A big reason this event was so successful was the involvement of our honorees, Ann Colgin and Joe Wender. They
have given so much to this community, and are so highly regarded in their professions, that others naturally wanted
to give back. We all benefited from the high esteem in which they’re both held.
Themed “Special Pairings,” our 2009 gala raised over $1.5 million – surpassing all gala totals and truly exceeding our
expectations. We were honored to have been a part of this event and to work with a team of “Napa Valley’s Finest.”
Even more gratifying is the knowledge that our efforts will support the Hospital in delivering the finest possible
health care to this valley and beyond.
Gail Policy, Gala Chair, and Carmen Policy
Besides the pleasure of working with Gail, Carmen, and the St. Helena Hospital Foundation on this special evening,
we were gratified to see such broad-based bidding and support for the event – not just from our local community but
from friends of the Hospital who came long distances to join us. They were a key factor in putting us well over our goal
and all previous fundraising records.
When we traveled recently to Texas, we visited with friends who had attended our “Special Pairings” gala. They had
been struck, they said, by how passionately the Napa Valley community supports its local hospital, as well as how well
we support each other.
We are honored to have been part of this special event and to continue to be involved in the cause of St. Helena Hospital.
Ann Colgin and Joe Wender

“For the past 25 years, I’ve commuted to St. Helena Hospital from Placerville.
That’s 150 miles, three hours each way. One of the main reasons it’s worth my while?
The people. Even though we don’t provide direct patient care, our department’s
philosophy is that the patient will interact with our work in some way or another.
They’ll have the benefit of a facility that’s warm, comfortable, and well maintained.
We’re not just taking care of a building – indirectly, we’re taking care of the patients.”

2009 Income from Charitable Donations
Thanks to the generosity of all of our donors, the St. Helena Hospital Foundation realized more than $15 million in gifts
this past year. In addition to capital for the new Johnson Pavilion, home of the Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center and
Trinchero Surgery Center, funding helped to support many programs and services that benefit the community.

“People gather here in good times and bad to talk about what’s going on
in their lives. I’m always amazed at how generous and thoughtful everyone
is here in the Upper Valley. This is a community of people who look out for
each other and are really interested in their welfare.”

“We felt like Carolyn had been
given a fighting chance,” Craig
Bond recalls about their meeting
with Greg Smith, MD, and the
hope he gave them about Carolyn’s
chance of recovery.
St. Helena Hospital Foundation I 2009 Annual Report
In Sickness and in Health
Cancer isn’t fussy. It doesn’t care how much money you make, where you live, or how much you give back to your community.
Last April, cancer introduced itself to Carolyn and Craig Bond. The couple is well known and loved in the Napa Valley –
she as a kindergarten and music teacher at St. Helena Primary School, he as director of a variety of choral groups in town.
But suddenly their single focus was on Carolyn’s liver, after she discovered a firm area in her abdomen.
The Bonds’ first stop was to Carolyn’s own HMO doctor. After ordering tests, he confirmed primary liver cancer and a
tumor the size of a small grapefruit. Blood work showed that Carolyn’s alpha fetoprotein (AFP) level – normally in the
0-15 range – was literally off the chart at 35,000.
Next was the oncologist, who did not have good news. “Inoperable and incurable” were the words the Bonds remember.
Although he recommended they talk to the HMO’s surgeon, he advised that they usually didn’t operate on tumors this
large. “I think we can buy three to five years,” he said, and gave the Bonds a prescription for anti-anxiety medication.
They returned home in a state of grief and shock. “We had just been given a death sentence,” Carolyn says. She curled up
on the sofa, but Craig’s first reflex was to reach for the phone – he’d heard good things about oncologist Greg Smith, MD,
at St. Helena Hospital. To his utter amazement, an actual human answered his call on the first ring. “How does tomorrow
at 9 a.m. sound?” the receptionist asked. It sounded pretty good.
Although the Bonds didn’t bring test results with them, Dr. Smith examined Carolyn and conveyed only optimism, despite
her skyrocketing AFP levels. “From what you’re telling me, I don’t know why it’s inoperable,” he said. “When in doubt, cut it
out.” He urged them to consult their HMO surgeon and to get a second opinion at UCSF, with which St. Helena Hospital
has an affiliation. The Bonds high-fived each other as they left. “We felt like Carolyn had been given a fighting chance,” Craig
recalls. The next day Dr. Smith personally called them to make sure they’d contacted UCSF.
In early June, Carolyn underwent a four-hour surgery to remove about a third of her liver. She didn’t need the usual blood
transfusion, and there was no need for chemotherapy or radiation. After a mere six days in the hospital, she returned home
to pick up her life where she’d left it in April. She now returns for four-month check-ups and each time has been given a
clean bill of health, with an AFP level currently at 3.4.
“Dr. Smith gave us a great four-letter word,” Craig recalls. “It was HOPE.” And there is nothing more important than hope
when your life – or the life of a loved one – is on the line.

“Wayne and I agreed our planned gift
would go to the Hospital because we felt
so fortunate to have such a good resource
in our small town.”
St. Helena Hospital Foundation I 2009 Annual Report
Partners for Life: Mabel and Wayne Johnson
Mabel Johnson and her late husband, Wayne, exemplify how regular people can achieve stupendous things.
The St. Helena couple worked at the local PG&E office, living modestly and taking advantage of the company’s
employee investment benefits. Before Wayne passed away in 2001, the couple established an irrevocable trust, and
in 2009, Mabel finalized an $8-million estate gift to St. Helena Hospital – the largest charitable contribution in
its history. In recognition, St. Helena Hospital has named its newest building the Johnson Pavilion.
Not only was the contribution the Hospital’s most generous gift, it was among the institution’s first planned gifts.
“In 1987, Wayne and I decided to diversify our investments, and Wayne came up with the idea of the charitable
remainder trust,” Mabel says. “We both agreed it would go to the Hospital because we felt so fortunate to have
such a good resource in our small town. But the Hospital Foundation had never done this type of gift agreement
before, so we hired a trust expert to help us set it up.”
That’s a pretty big impact for someone whose path never took her far from the Napa Valley. Mabel Dal Porto grew up
on a 52-acre ranch of prunes, grapes, and walnuts on Mee Lane, and at St. Helena High School she met a good-looking
new boy named Wayne Johnson. “I had my eye and my heart on him!” she smiles now. But when Wayne proposed
marriage, Mabel resisted. Being a country wife was hard work, and she didn’t feel ready for the challenge. He convinced
her by offering a marriage of equal partnership, and they wed soon after she graduated in 1942.
Mabel fondly remembers all the fun they had – playing on sports teams, joining the local lodges and water-skiing every
weekend up at Lake Berryessa. Every workday at noon they met at home for a full lunch together. There were also
excellent local doctors and, if they needed it, the good Sanitarium up the hill.
In 1996, a friend persuaded Mabel to help out at the Hospital’s Volunteer Project Center, and for the past 14 years she
has spent more than 3,500 hours managing the doctors’ administrative support team. She continues to report to the
center every Wednesday for a full work day.
Since making the extraordinary gift, Mabel has had the chance to observe a knee replacement in the Trinchero Surgery
Center and see other ways in which her generosity has done so much good. “It’s been great to see the newest technologies
in the medical field,” she says, “as well as to demonstrate how planned giving can benefit both the giver and so many others.”
But there’s one more thing Mabel wants you to know: “Everyone has been giving me all the credit,” she says of the community’s
response to the record-breaking gift. “But this was always a joint effort between the two of us. We really did it together.”

St. Helena Hospital Foundation I 2009 Annual Report
Tree of Dreams
In November, when throngs of local residents attended the opening celebration of St. Helena Hospital’s
new Johnson Pavilion, they were greeted in the lobby by a dramatic sight: a 13-foot-tall tree of steel
and bronze with delicate copper leaves, growing skyward and carved with 48 symbols of hope from
around the world that were chosen, in part, by Hospital employees. The original sculpture, by artist
Carol Jeanotilla, is called the Hope Tree.
The Pavilion itself was the realization of countless dreams and years of planning. It was funded by the Foundation’s
recent capital campaign to which the community donated $36.2 million – $8 million by a single donor, Mabel Johson,
and her late husband Wayne. Occupying the upper half of the 25,000-square-foot facility is the Martin-O’Neil Cancer
Center, recognizing a $3-million gift from Stephen Martin and Dennis O’Neil. As the most comprehensive and advanced
cancer center in the North Bay, it provides the highest standard of oncology treatment and technology, and has become
affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center (UCSF) for clinical research trials.
Radiation oncologist David Tate, MD, sees the Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center as a healing place where medical teams
use advanced techniques, treatments and technology; where electronic medical records and a patient-centered culture
connect seamlessly. “The Cancer Center is built around patient needs before, during, and after treatment” says Dr. Tate.
“Some kinds of cancers are more than 95 percent curable. The Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center is a bridge to the future
for patients who will survive their cancer and get a second chance in life.”
The Pavilion’s lower level houses the Trinchero Surgery Center, named in honor of Evalyn and Bob Trinchero for
their $2.5-million gift. Two adjacent surgical suites and two special-procedures rooms are used for inpatient and
outpatient surgeries, while ten semi-private patient beds are available for pre- and post-operative preparation and
recovery. Ceiling-mounted equipment, the latest LED lighting, and a new MRI machine make the Surgery Center as
state-of-the-art as at any urban medical center.
“This facility allows us to offer an expanded spectrum of surgical services to our community,” says Steven Herber, MD.
“As a surgeon, I feel privileged to have access to such an efficient, high-tech environment, which enables me to provide
exceptional patient care.”
The Hope Tree can be named in honor of a loved one. Please contact the St. Helena Hospital Foundation at (707) 963-6208.

“Hope is so important here. One patient told me that when she entered
our lobby and saw the Hope Tree, she knew she was in good hands.
She said, ‘The trunk is the whole hospital community supporting us,
and the branches are reaching out to help, just like every member of the staff.’
Then we cried together.”

Precision and Expertise —– In Our Own Backyard
Among St. Helena Hospital’s many valued partners are the Napa Valley Vintners and their 2008 Auction Napa Valley
event, which granted $500,000 to fund the purchase of a cutting-edge Varian linear accelerator and radiation treatment
system. Our new Dynamic Targeting® Image-Guided Radiotherapy technology uses digital imaging techniques to
pinpoint the exact location of a tumor, sparing the healthy tissue surrounding it.
Herb Schmidt, a 35-year Napa Valley resident and founder of Wine Colleagues Napa Valley, is one recent satisfied
patient. Like many in our small rural community, when Herb was diagnosed with cancer he sought a second opinion
at a large university medical center in San Francisco. UCSF oncologists confirmed Herb’s diagnosis and the prescribed
course of treatment that would combine dual therapies of chemotherapy and radiation. They also assured him that there
was no reason to travel to the City with the high level of expertise and technology available at St. Helena Hospital’s
newly opened Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center.
“I cannot imagine what it would have entailed to have to drive to San Francisco every day for radiation,” Herb says now.
“Today we broke a record by getting me in and out of my radiation therapy in just seven minutes. It hardly disturbs your
day – in fact, I’m about to go to lunch with a client.”
Discovering that you have a serious illness can be a daunting prospect at best. “Having this technology in our community
is an unbelievable asset,” Herb adds. “With this fast equipment, the convenience of a phenomenal cancer center, and
the knowledge that it’s competently run by the whole team, my experience has been as comfortable as it can be under
the circumstances.”
St. Helena Hospital Foundation President and CEO Elaine John is particularly grateful to Napa Valley Vintners, saying,
“Our new linear accelerator is just the latest example of Auction Napa Valley’s continued generosity, which is making a
palpable and profound difference in the lives of so many.”

Partners in Support
Year-Round Giving
The Napa Valley community has come to expect the highest standard of local medical care, delivered
year-round from St. Helena Hospital. In return, this same community has responded by renewing
its committed support of the Hospital. Such annual gifts ensure that our patients have convenient access
to the latest technology, programs, and services. They enable us to provide our medical staff with the
necessary equipment to deliver the best possible care.
In addition to generous philanthropy from individual donors to help fund major capital projects, our
Hospital counts heavily on contributions for annual program support from the President’s Forum. In
2009, members of our President’s Forum provided $155,804 in critical support for Emergency Services
and many community outreach programs.
The annual fall gala is perhaps the most spectacular demonstration of that open-handed local
commitment. Individuals, local wineries, and businesses all come together to make the evening a
resounding success for the Hospital and, by extension, the community. The 2009 gala, Special
Pairings, honored Ann Colgin and Joe Wender and their generous contributions to the Napa Valley.
The event raised $1.5 million in support of St. Helena Hospital’s new Coon Joint Replacement
Institute. The Fund-a-Need lot alone brought in a record $461,000 to help acquire the cutting-edge
MAKO robotic-arm system.
For more information on the President’s Forum or the 2010 Foundation Gala, please call (707) 963-6208.

More Than One Way to Give
St. Helena Hospital’s history of private support dates back more than 130 years. Founded in 1878 as a rural health retreat,
the facility grew with the needs of the Valley and became a full-service hospital at the turn of the twentieth century. Since then,
the people of Napa Valley have upheld the Hospital’s vision to become a first-class location for health and healing, sustaining it
with charitable gifts at every level. Today there are more ways than ever to invest in our invaluable health-care resource.
Gifts of Cash – Outright gifts of cash (which include gifts made by credit card or check) enable the donor to claim
a charitable deduction for the full value of the gift.* In 2009, 95% of gifts to St. Helena Hospital were
made by credit card or check.
Gifts of Securities – The donor as well as the Hospital can benefit from gifts of appreciated securities. A donor may
claim an income tax deduction for the full fair-market value of the securities donated.*
Planned Gifts – Planned-giving methods such as bequests, annuities, and charitable remainder trusts offer donors
creative ways in which to support the Hospital and increase their earnings while achieving tax or estateplanning advantages.
Gifts of Time – Last year, 143 dedicated volunteers contributed 21,000 hours of their time to the Hospital, serving
as pages, coordinating mailing projects, and staffing the Big Oak Gift Shop and Acorn Thrift Store.
Each year volunteer activities bring in welcome additional funds to St. Helena Hospital; in 2009,
volunteers raised $62,500.
Online Giving – You can also support St. Helena Hospital by making your gift on our secure online site at
www. sthelenahospital.org/DonateNow. Several donor options are available, including making
gifts in honor or in memory of a loved one.
*This is general information only and not official tax advice. Please consult your tax adviser for details and exceptions.
To discuss any of these giving options, please give us a call at (707) 963-6208.

Thank You
We extend special gratitude to the Napa Valley Vintners who, through the Napa Valley Wine Auction and Auction
Napa Valley, have contributed over $9 million to St. Helena Hospital since 1981. These grants have offered significant
support to nearly every department in the Hospital through the years.
In 2009, Auction Napa Valley provided funding for an increasing number of indigent people who come to St. Helena
Hospital for emergency and acute medical services, including psychiatric care. St. Helena’s Women’s Center Chronic
Disease Prevention Program received funding to provide preventive health screenings to individuals who reside in
the upper Napa Valley and have inadequate or no health insurance coverage and/or do not have transportation to
commute to other locations where no-cost screenings are available.
The Napa Valley Vintners’ dedication to the well-being of our community is truly a partnership that ensures a healthy
future for all who live and work here.
