Ron Weissbeck My dear family in Christ, Once we get beyond Labor Day, those nice long summer weekends come to an end and activities stay closer to home. For some of us there is now the added treat of entertainment through sports. I must confess—although I’m not one who watches much T.V., that is certainly not the case when it comes to the “liturgy” of football. I have been engaged in Catholic worship since I was 10-years old. In the pre-Vatican II days it was limited to serving every day, but with the changes to the vernacular, all who come to worship are called to be involved. As I have said before, I truly feel privileged to be an integral part of the way we go about worshipping the LORD here at St. John’s. There is so much participation through our various ministries, and the enthusiastic singing we have here is a rare thing not offered at every parish where I have been. I often wonder why the “liturgy” of sports is so much more captivating than the worship of God. It is fascinating how people ready themselves for a sporting event. Preparation to detail includes food, drink, and fellow “worshippers.” At the stadium the mascot, cheerleaders, and team colors are prominent. For most, the names of the players are household conversation, and for the diehards, family members are taught about sports at a very early age. Even babies wear onsies emblazoned with mom or dad’s favorite team mascot or logo. What would it be like if 10% of this energy were channeled into the preparation for the liturgy, the work of the people, in gathering for the celebration of the Eucharistic feast? It is not just the director of liturgy, musicians, ministers, deacon, and priest who have to get ready—we all do. I admit that I am a Broncos fan, and there was a time when my Mondays would be ruined should they have lost the game. I take my Broncos very seriously. But let’s not forget to examine what we value and how we make our preparations. Sports are just one example. What a difference there would be if we would invite a family member, a neighbor, or friend to the Divine Liturgy and let the Holy Spirit “intoxicate” us. From September 23rd through November 1st, you are invited to join other Christians for a 40 Days for Life campaign—forty days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You are also invited to stand and peacefully pray during the 40-day vigil in front of Boulder Abortion Clinic, 1130 Alpine Avenue in Boulder, and to help spread the word about abortion to your community. If you would like more information, especially if you want to volunteer, please contact Dave Rusch, 303-579-1162, or [email protected]. You may also visit https://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/boulder/. There will be a campaign kickoff meeting at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 6739 South Boulder Road in Boulder at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 20th. All are welcome to attend. Holy Hour of Adoration For the 40 Days for Life campaign, St. John’s will set aside a Holy Hour of Adoration in our Immaculate Heart of Mary chapel each Wednesday of the campaign from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., from September 23rd through October 29th. We will pray for an end to abortion, the babies, parents, grandparents, siblings, and abortion clinic workers. You Are Not Alone… It’s normal to grieve a pregnancy loss, including the loss of a child by abortion. It can form a hole in one’s heart, a hole so deep that sometimes it seems nothing can fill the emptiness. Project Rachel Post Abortion Healing Hotline: 303-388-4491, ext. 153. Open 24 hours to women and men. Fr. Ron 3 CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST LONGMONT, COLORADO Treasures from Our Tradition St. John’s Food Bank and Outreach It seems obvious to us that Jesus Christ is the Lord of second chances. We need look no further than Peter’s denial and rehabilitation for proof. Yet early Christians were more tentative with the gift of forgiveness. For them, every Sunday was an experience of the Lord’s power to heal and forgive, yet there were three sins that placed persons at the margins of the community’s life. In some places, the rift caused by these sins was permanent. The sins were apostasy (denial of the faith), adultery, and murder. They were particularly detested because of their power to divide and even scatter the community gathered around the Lord’s table. Fragile and persecuted communities could crumble and disappear under the weight of a harm done by a public sinner. Sinners were excluded from the community in the hope that “tough love” would help them come to their senses and experience deeper conversion. Inevitably, lists of grave sins grew longer as various bishops added their personal pet peeves to the roster, and more people were required to do public penance. For them, reconciliation was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Many sinners accepted their condition and hoped for a chance at a deathbed reconciliation by anointing. With more and more people permanently on the outs, the Church began to struggle toward the light of the Lord’s unfailing gift of reconciliation. By John Williams The demographics of our food bank clientele has modified over the years due to the fact that we deliver a large percentage of our weekly boxes. This service has proven extremely helpful to shut-ins, the elderly, and clients with physical or mental disabilities. In addition to these categories, there are quite a few families with a single parent who rely on us to help them feed their children. Most of these single parents have the responsibilities of trying to hold down some sort of employment in addition to spending time with and raising their children. We have clients who live in their car and drop by to pick up their weekly food box. Since they have no way to cook, they are limited on what items they can accept. They will accept lunch meat, cheese, milk, bread, peanut butter, jelly, yogurt, fresh fruits, and vegetables. We have clients who wish to pay us back by becoming volunteers. And sometimes we have clients who thought they were in good shape, but found out that doing without the food box made quite an impact. Thanks to all of our generous parish community who volunteer and donate in order for us to serve those in need in our Longmont community. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Servant Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, “The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear” (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. And twice, “The Lord GOD is my help” (50:7, 9), so that the servant can endure the coming struggle. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Every year the Office of Marriage and Family Life Ministries invites couples throughout the Archdiocese that have or will be celebrating their 25th, 50th, or 50+ anniversaries to attend an annual Anniversary Mass. This year’s Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary and will be celebrated by Archbishop Samuel Aquila. The Mass will also include a renewing of the marital vows. It is always a great joy to recognize couples who have reached such a milestone in their marriage. We celebrate the witness of their fidelity to the sacrament of marriage. There is no cost for the event. Please RSVP by Friday, September 18th. Sunday, October 11th at 1:00 p.m. Mass Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 11385 Grant Drive in Northglenn. To register, please contact Carrie Keating at 303-715-3259, or [email protected]. 4 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 13, 2015 St. John’s 5K Fun Run/Walk Friday, September 25th McIntosh Lake Complimentary Directory Pictures The complimentary directory pictures are here. CREED has decided to embrace an old tradition for some of our CREED students. Classes for grades K-2 will be held on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:15 a.m. We recognize that little ones may have some challenges in the standard classroom setting after attending school all day. Our new time for this younger group will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., and falls between the two most popular family Masses, 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. St. John the Baptist is pleased to announce a new program for our high schoolers. Addressing the call to assist in the moral formation of our youth, we are blessed with an extraordinary and qualified instructor who is thrilled to be working with our youth. CLOW: Staring up in November, our Children’s Liturgy of the Word will start up again at the 10:30 a.m. Mass and we encourage our families to stay after their child’s class and attend. This is a wonderful Mass for our little ones, especially those preparing for their First Holy Communion. October 6th at 6:00 p.m. Adult Catholic Religious Education (Adult CREED) is a casual setting targeted at the adults of our parish. Could you use a brush up on some of your Catholic teachings? At St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, we strive to assist our parishioners in their religious, moral, and spiritual formation. Please join us on the first Tuesday of every month starting October 6th in St. Benedict Hall from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. We will have a different topic each week led by one of our parish staff. One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the “after people.” Stephen Ministers are there: ...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get. ...after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life. ...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you. ...after the doctor says, “I'm sorry, but there is nothing more we can do.” ...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.” ...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away, and the house suddenly seems empty. ...after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away. ...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible. ...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck. ...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out. Stephen Ministers are the “after people.” They are ready to come alongside you or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. For more information on receiving Stephen Ministry care, contact St John’s at 303-776-0737. 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” In this famous passage about Christian discipleship, we usually tend to focus on Jesus’ call to take up our cross. This can feel frightening or unattractive to us. It can seem as though the choice to be Christian is a choice for pain and suffering. But we must not forget the last part of this verse: Jesus tells us to follow him. He is walking this journey ahead of us. He is the one who first takes up the cross. We are simply called to follow in his footsteps. Think of how much easier it is to follow a path that someone else has already trod. Think about hiking, for example, and consider what’s involved in “blazing your own trail.” You have to advance face-first into the brambles and bushes; you have to navigate the right direction to your destination; you have to scale the hills and cross the waters without the aid of stair or bridge. On the other hand, when we hike on a path that someone else has created, we are spared all of these extra trials. Yes, the journey may still be intense, but we make it with great comfort and confidence, knowing that we are going in the right direction and that we have every advantage along the way thanks to someone else’s efforts. This is what it is to follow the path of Christ. Every human person will have their “crosses,” whether they are Christian or not. Physical pain, disappointment, rejection, grief, and the like are not unique to the followers of Jesus. What is unique is that our Lord and Savior has walked this path before us. Through his passion and cross, Jesus has taken all of this into his own hands, blazing a trail that safely leads each of us to the joy of resurrection. www.johnthebaptist.org 8 TWENTY-FOURTH DEDICATION OF THE SUNDAY LATERAN IN ORDINARY BASILICA COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFULTIME DEPARTED - ALL SOULS DAY Mass Intentions: Saturday, September 12, 2015 5:00 p.m. †James A.
