A Word from
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
During the last month we have had a number of
children and young adults receive the Holy Eucharist for the
first time. This celebration is surrounded by a number of
traditions that include special attire, religious articles, and
visits from grandparents and baptismal sponsors. In any
language when it comes to First Communion it is not
ordinary. Why? The individual receives for the first time the
body and blood of Christ. In the second reading from First
Corinthians, we have this reminder, “Every time, then, you
eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of
the Lord until he comes!” (1 Corinthians 11:26).
We take this at face value; it’s not a symbol or sign
but the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. This has been
the teaching since the beginning of the Church and this is
stated in that same reading from the letter of St. Paul to the
Corinthians, “I received from the Lord what I handed on to
you, . . .” (1 Corinthians 11:23). Here begins the
understanding of the tradition, “handing on.” It’s not creating
something new that gets those participating to pay attention.
Tradition, in this context, means that a ritual is part of a
community that already exists. It is through this ritual,
words, actions, and symbols, that the present participants are
connected to the whole.
What I’m saying is that ritual has little or no meaning
unless there is a community that connects with the action; an
individual who acts independently of the group does not need
or want ritual. Such an individual only gives meaning to
ritual that is consciously of value to that person. On the other
hand, the action of which we are writing is not created to suit
the individual, here and now. It demands that the individual
be open and enter into the given ritual.
I often have heard that some have said that the Mass
is boring or has little meaning in the way that it’s presented,
that may be accurate for that individual. The individual,
however, does not define the reality; it has been established
long ago. St. Paul had already reminded the community of
Corinth of this.
The focus for the feast of Corpus Christi is the real
presence that is sacramentally made real. I hope and pray
that all who read this column give thought to what is at the
core of our worship and not base reality on subjective
judgment but the objective belief which is at the heart of our
tradition.
The Parish Office and Eucharistic
Adoration will be closed on Monday,
May 30th in observance of Memorial
Day.
Due to roof and ceiling repair in the grand foyer of the
parish center, our Parish Office and Eucharistic Adoration
will be closed on Monday, June 6th, following the
6:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. Masses.
On Sunday, June 19th, our English Confirmation Mass is
scheduled for 10:30 a.m. with Archbishop Aquila. Due to
this Confirmation Mass, our Spanish Mass will begin at
1:00 p.m.
Summer Office and Adoration Hours:
Our Parish Office and Eucharistic Adoration will close on
Sundays at 4:30 p.m. beginning Monday, June 6th.
Our Parish Office will close on Fridays at 12:30 p.m.
beginning Friday, June 3rd.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Once the early Christians realized that Christ’s coming
in glory was delayed, there was a need to provide for the
governance and everyday needs of the church. The various
“orders” within the church carried forward the apostles’
ministry, but also allowed for a measure of creativity. The
sacrament we call “holy orders” evolved somewhat slowly.
At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms they
knew, adapting them to new situations. Synagogues, for
example, were administered by a board of “elders,”
translated into Greek as presbyteros. We know from the
Acts of the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a
normal feature of church life from earliest days. They
stood in relationship to another order, that of “overseers,”
translated into Greek as episkopos, giving us the English
“bishops.” The bishop was the shepherd, the faithful tender
of the flock, one who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins,
and maintained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons
were the chief advisers for the charitable life of the church,
so were the presbyters meant to advise the bishop on the
spiritual life of the faithful. They were trusted advisers at
first, not pastors or priests as we understand those terms
today.

Hello parish family. We are in the midst of making
some decisions on our fall curriculum for our
children, youth, and adult classes and I’d like to
share some of the plans we have in the works.
We have listened to our parents regarding offerings
of Catholic instruction past the age of Confirmation.
We understand…your teen has been Confirmed, now
what do they do with it?
Well, I believe we have made an exciting decision to
offer the first of its kind here at St. John’s. We will
be offering our teens and parents a chance to broaden
their understanding of our Catholic faith
TOGETHER.
Starting in the fall, twice a
month on Sunday mornings,
from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.,
we will offer an opportunity for
teens and parents to watch the
Bishop Barron’s “Catholicism”
series of DVDs together, with a
question and answer period with Fr. Ron afterward.

Meet our newest Stephen Ministers: Andy Reyes, Rosa
Hernandez, Cecilia and Steven Wostenberg (who all speak fluent
Spanish), and Deacon Mike Berens who is also a Stephen Minister
Leader. These five individuals diligently attended the training,
learned and participated in classes, and with the understanding of
their families and the presence of the Holy Spirit are ready to serve
our congregation. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin
their care giving.
Stephen Ministry began under Fr. James Fox twenty-three
years ago, we have twenty-nine care givers who pray and take
communion to members of our St John’s congregation who are
hospitalized or homebound. Anyone who feels called to join us or
needs a care giver please call the church office at 303-776-0737.
We always welcome new care givers and care receivers.

FED BY THE LORD
Jesus’ words “This is my body” and “This cup is the
new covenant in my blood” were only part of his table
blessing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in remembrance of
me” (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25).
This is the good news of today’s solemnity. Like the
five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is
not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next
meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for
sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he
brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham.
As children of God’s reign, we are blessed to be able to
receive and share God’s gift. And we do so in the way most
appropriate to our state in life—as parents, children,
husbands, wives, or religious.

El domingo 19 de Junio son las Confirmaciones en
Ingles, por esa razón la misa de 12:30 p.m. cambia su

La Eucaristía, sacramento de la
compasión de Dios
Al celebrar la fiesta del Corpus Christi en el
marco del Jubileo Extraordinario de la
Misericordia, la contemplación y adoración
del Señor en el sacramento de la Eucaristía
Fr. Gerardo
nos ayuda a crecer y avanzar en el camino
de la compasión. Este camino, recorrido por Jesús hasta el
extremo, se hace presencia y memoria permanente para
nosotros en este sacramento.
La Eucaristía, centro y fuente de toda la vida de la
Iglesia, es el gran sacramento de la compasión de Dios:
El Dios que vio el sufrimiento de su pueblo, escuchó su
clamor y compadecido lo liberó de la esclavitud (Ex 3,7-8),
sigue escuchando el clamor de su pueblo y ofreciendo su
vida por él en el sacramento de la Eucaristía.
El Dios que un día marcó las puertas de las casas de
sus hijos con la sangre del cordero pascual, liberándolos así
del exterminador (Ex 12,12-14), nos marca hoy en cada
Eucaristía con la sangre derramada de su Hijo.
· El Dios que dijo a Moisés “yo soy el que soy” (Ex 3,14),
está junto a nosotros en la aflicción, se hace compañero de
camino y nos muestra su compasión en la Eucaristía por
medio de su Hijo Jesucristo.
· El Dios que alimentó a su pueblo en el desierto con el
maná cuando se encontraba exhausto por el hambre y
angustiado ante el riesgo de morir (Ex 16,2-4), nos ofrece en
la Eucaristía un nuevo pan para que quien lo coma no muera
y tenga vida eterna.
· El Dios que mantuvo su fidelidad a pesar de las
infidelidades de su pueblo (Ex 34,6-7), es el Dios siempre
fiel que en la Eucaristía nos ofrece una alianza nueva sellada
con su sangre.
· El Dios que en Jesús se conmovió ante una multitud
hambrienta, despertó la conciencia de los suyos y multiplicó
el pan (Mt 15,32-37), en la Eucaristía nos abre los ojos ante
los hambrientos de la tierra y nos llama a poner nuestro pan
a disposición de los hermanos.
· El Dios que en Jesús nos dijo que hay que salir a los
caminos para invitar al banquete a los pobres, los lisiados,
los ciegos y los cojos (Lc 14,16-23), nos invita en cada
Eucaristía a sentar a los pobres a la mesa.
· El Dios que en Jesús nos amó hasta el extremo y lavó los
pies de los discípulos (Jn 13,1-15) cada vez que
actualizamos su memoria en la Eucaristía renueva con
nosotros este gesto de compasión en la vida entregada y
hecha servicio.

comienzan el miércoles 1º de junio y serán durante todo el
mes, de lunes a jueves de 9:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. Por favor
