In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first Letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: all this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. SECOND COLLECTION This weekend is our second collection after Holy Communion to benefit the Parish Improvement Fund. Thank you for your support and prayers for our parish community! The two journeying on the road to Emmaus were so preoccupied in their own suffering that they failed to recognize Christ beside them. JOURNEY Find JOY in the When Pope Francis was elected over one year ago, he stepped OURNEY out on the balcony at St. Peter’s and addressed the whole world. In his moving address, he used the word “journey” four times. This is a word that should stick with us while Pope Francis serves as shepherd. Often times we look at life as a series of events rather than a whole journey. This can be frustrating especially when the dramatic events of life wear us down. The walk to Emmaus is a powerful reminder that we are on a journey and Jesus Christ walks with us. In order to keep the hope of the resurrection with us always, we need to let our journey mirror that of those early disciples on the Road to Emmaus. Pay attention to the details: They were disciples of Jesus. They could openly discuss their faith struggles. They relied on the Scriptures to interpret their lives. They welcomed the stranger who was the Risen Christ. They listened to him. They invited him to stay. In the breaking of the bread, they saw things clearly. They changed the direction of their journey to head back towards the church. Is your Catholic faith a journey, or just a series of unconnected church events? Pope Francis is like the voice of Peter in our first reading, reminding us that life is a journey, we are on the path, and we must keep Christ ever before us. MAY 4TH: CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC & MAY 18TH: GOD IS GOOD This Gospel to me depicts many common attitudes toward God in our current time. The men did not believe in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, until He broke the bread and proved himself to them. I think many people today have the same views. Many choose to ignore the Lord and do not find it necessary to praise Him daily. It seems we only choose to acknowledge Christ when something good or big happens. I know that I can relate to that, too. I know God is always with me, but I am not always aware of His presence. I try to remember that when we break bread in the Eucharist, Christ is present. After reading this Gospel, I know that I really have to focus on the Eucharist and the presence of Christ at Mass. Gracie, 16 - LIFETEEN STEUBENVILLE SAN DIEGO JULY 25.26.27, 2014 to do this.
