Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
God is calling
Dios está llamando
Today’s readings and prayers remind us to keep a direct line open to God so that we may answer his call. It
is easy in today’s busy world to screen our calls, checking caller ID before pushing the “answer” button. We
are so often over scheduled that we put off talking and
sharing because “we don’t have time.” At times, we put
God “on hold.” We have become slaves to our modern
day schedules. We are reminded that this enslavement
is similar to that which Saint Paul addresses in his letter
to the Galatians. He reminds us that Christ has set us
free, and we should “stand firm and not submit again to
the yoke of slavery”. We are reminded that this yoke of
slavery grows out of our insistence that we know what
is best for us. We measure our successes and failures
according to worldly standards and many times have
forgotten, as the Responsorial Psalm reminds us, that
the “Lord is our inheritance.” Jesus speaks to this truth
in the Gospel when he journeys to Jerusalem with his
disciples. Three different men approach him, appearing
ready to answer his call about following him. Each hesitates when the realities of a life of discipleship crystallize. They wish to push the “hold” button, but in doing so
miss their opportunity to follow Jesus. We push the
“hold” button too and miss God’s calls. Even Elisha
struggled in the Old Testament reading. Yet, when he
realized that God was calling him through Elijah, he
offered all his worldly possessions as sacrifice to become God’s prophet.
He modeled for us in
his surrender the blessing
we
experience
when we answer God’s
call, the reminder that
“[He] shows us the path
to life” and we experience “the fullness of
joys in [His] presence”
(Responsorial
Psalm).

Parish News
Woven Together as Christs Family
The death of a parent, family member, or a close
friend is a profound
experience of loss.
It is a loss that
leaves a void or a
hole which sometimes is never be
filled. The recent
death of my mother
has made me more aware of the significance that so
many people are feeling when these significant life
events take place. In many ways, we were prepared for
her death since she was on the verge of turning 95.
While a long, productive life does not lessen the impact, it
is not a sudden, surprising event. The tragic happenings
in Orlando, with the violence in a night club or the child in
Disney World, speak more profoundly to the precious
need for us to value life as a gift and a treasure to preserve. Whether in advanced years or middle age, or in
youth, we know that a heart of love is impacted by loss.
I am so grateful for loving communities of faith
that have supported me during this time. I sit in a privileged place as a priest who encounters many people and
shares important life events with them. My mother often
accompanied me and shared her life with friends and
family and she brought her unique humor and style to our
gatherings. She did this the few times she was able to
join us for mass at OLA. I wish to thank all who helped to
celebrate her passing by your support and generosity and
by your cards and prayers. It is a tribute to this community of faith that we make manifest our journey of faith together and desire that no one should be alone at these
special moments in life. We know what the feeling of isolation and loneliness fell like and we know how to stand in
solidarity with those who weep and mourn. It is my hope
that we always seek out those who are mourning the loss
of loved ones and gather around them as this Christian
community is capable of doing. We have many in our
parish community who are heroic in their care for elderly
parents and chronically ill spouses. Many parents are
committed to the care of sick children and do so without
complaint or fanfare. May we be attentive to their needs,
calling forth from this community, support and compassion that brings the love of Christ into what may seem like
great sadness and transform it into peace.
I am grateful to everyone who has expressed
condolences and offered comfort to me and my family. It
is a true witness of how our paths in life crisscross and
weave a tapestry rich in color and texture. May we bless
one another always with this kind of care and concern,
especially toward the stranger and those closest to us.
With my deepest thanks and appreciation,
Fr. Leon

Fire safety: planning and
preparation
The United States has the highest fire death
and injury rate in the world. Every 80 seconds, a family—
somewhere in the U.S.—is impacted by a residential fire.
A little planning and effort can help minimize your family’s
risk. You can start by installing, testing, and maintaining
smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. For a list of other
suggestions please email:
[email protected] or call (213) 637-7227 to receive a copy of the VIRTUS® article “A Reminder About
Fire Safety in the Home.”

Reminder About Fire Safety in the Home” (Un
