ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, This Sunday aernoon we will celebrate a holy hour of Divine Mercy at 3 PM. We gather as a community of faith in the presence of the Risen Lord with gra"tude and deep longing. The message and devo"on to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the wri"ngs of Saint Faus"na Kowalska. At the "me of her death in 1938, the message of Divine Mercy had begun to spread throughout Poland and the world. The future Pope John Paul II was deeply moved by the wri"ngs of St. Faus"na. He described Divine Mercy as the answer to the world’s problems. When Pope John Paul canonized St. Faus"na in 2000, he also established the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. On this day we ask for God’s Mercy. We approach Him in prayer asking Him to pour out his mercy upon us and on the whole world. We extend to others the love and forgiveness we have received and hope for from God. We completely trust in Jesus le6ng go of our false no"ons of self-sufficiency and strength. We pray for the grace to forgive each other as we have been forgiven by God. We strive with His help to imitate His selfless love and in so doing open our hearts to the fullness of His love. We celebrate a truth very frequently forgo;en: God wants nothing other than the eternal happiness of every single person. He pleads with us to know that His mercy is greater than our sins. We need only repent and place our trust in Him to share His joy. “Jesus, I trust in You”. In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor April 7, 2013 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Jesus appeared to Sister Faustina Kowalska on Feb. 22, 1931, with rays radiating from His Heart. He said “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature , ‘Jesus, I trust in you.’ I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and throughout the world. The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender Mercy when My Agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross.” This image signifies the Divine Mercy poured out from Christ upon the Cross, and reminds us that the Cross, love in action, is the price of mercy. The Feast of Divine Mercy is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, as requested by Our Lord to Saint Faustina. Our parish will celebrate this beautiful Feast of Mercy today, Sunday, April 7th, with a Holy Hour at 3pm in the church. We will sing the Chaplet of Mercy and have Exposition and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Please come and pray with us as we honor the King of Mercy. FOLLOW-UP VIRTUS TRAINING FOR EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERS Ongoing refresher training is required each year for diocesan employees and volunteers who work with children. This is accomplished by viewing a short (30minute) video called "Keeping the Promise Alive." The next follow-up training sessions at St. Leo will be held Monday & Tuesday, April 22 & 23, and Wednesday & Thursday May 15 & 16. The film will be shown at 3 times: 8:15—8:45am, 2:15-2:45pm, and 6:00-6:30pm, all in the Guadalupe room, Parish Hall. This is not a replacement for the original 4hour training, but is a follow-up for persons whose original training took place a year or more ago. You do not need to sign up ahead of time, but you will be asked to sign out at the conclusion of the session to confirm your attendance. Contact Mary Adams at 703-273-5369 for more information.
