Read regularly: Aim for 10-15 minutes a day. Bedtime is often best, but a sibling’s sports practice or doctor’s appointment works too. Take turns choosing books: Children sometimes like to hear favorites over and over again. When it is your turn you can add variety with nonfiction, poetry, your favorite, or new stories. Be playful: You can uses voices for characters, or substitute your child’s or family member names for character names in the story. You don’t have to be an expert reader – your child will love it because it’s you! Reminders Davenport Open House is September 15th at 6:30 – Stop by room 21! Fun with Words Choose a three-letter word with a common chunk (2 or 3 letters found in many words like: ap, en, ill, ot, ame) For an example, I’ll pick cat. Now have your child change the beginning sound to make new words like: hat, bat, sat, mat. How many can he think of? As an extra challenge, try some blends or diagraphs at the beginning: flat, brat, chat, that. GK CUSD 424 First Grade September Newsletter We have been focusing on learning our school rules. The four B’s for Davenport are Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Caring and Be Safe. Ask your child if he or she can recite them to you. Snack time is very important. Please pack one HEALTHY snack for your child each day. A snack can be fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, cheese, nuts, popcorn, or crackers. A weekly first grade newsletter will be sent home each week starting in September.
