HAL Education Session

On Tuesday, December 13th we held our last Hispanic Austin Leadership Education Session of 2011. The goal of the Education Session was to provide participants
with views into the Hispanic education experience through the testimonials of
school administrators, parents, students and community leaders. The session also
explored alternative approaches to education, including charter schools and nonprofit organization ventures.
State Farm began events with a video spotlight on its Educational
Initiative. Mark Williams, AISD Board Chair, then described the
financial and other challenges that AISD faces in the coming and
subsequent years. Susan Dawson, Director of the E3 Alliance, followed Mr. Williams and provided numerical and statistical facts
on the state of education in Central Texas to complete the overview for participants.
The highlight of the morning was the Education Panel Discussion
which featured Donna Linn, principal, Galindo Elementary; Caroline Sweet, 2011
AISD Teacher of the Year from Metz Elementary; Bernardo Martinez, parent support
specialist, Wooten Elementary; and Diana Orrozco-Lapray, a UT Senior and Hispanic Scholar Consortium recipient. Christopher Rios, 2011 HAL Graduate, served as
moderator. HAL participants learned about how the roles of principal, teacher and
parent support specialist exceed our assumptions and are focused as much with
helping the parents as helping the students.
A quick tour of the 3M Innovation Center preceded lunch. The afternoon then
featured four speakers who direct community programs available to students and
parents:

El martes 13 de diciembre se celebró la sesión para la educación de Hispanic Austin Leadership del 2011. La meta de
la sesión para la educación fue el proporcionar a los participantes los puntos de vista de las experiencias en la educación

How to Network Virtually With Other GAHCC Members

There are three reasons we chose Google+ as our new community home
(plus a bonus reason).
Face-to-face interaction. One of the best Google+ features are the
Hangouts. These are video enabled virtual conference rooms where up
to ten people can see & talk to each other and share documents.
No limits on posting and commenting. In Google+ you can write article-sized, or short, posts. You can explain a complex issue, or answer an
issue with a well thought-out response.
Separate professional from personal. Google+ pioneered the concept of circles. You can create circles to keep conversations private, or
share issues of interest with just a select few.

Austin & Tehuacan Sign a “Sister Cities” Agreement

On Friday, November 18th, Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Eliseo Lezama
Prieto Mayor of Tehuacán, Puebla, Mexico, signed a Sister Cities agreement at City Hall to promote cultural, economic and educational exchange.

viernes 18 de noviembre, Eliseo Lezama Prieto, Presidente Municipal de
Tehuacán, Puebla y el Alcalde de Austin Texas, Lee Leffingwell firmaron el

Lee Leffingwell, said he felt proud to have achieved this friendship, “I
am sure this will become a successful relationship... and I am grateful
to the Tehuacán representatives for visiting us and having the initiative to achieve this agreement.”

New Affordable Healthy Texas Plans for Small Business

thoughts over the past couple of
years in these economic times.
Maintaining health insurance
coverage often is not a priority.

Not that you aren’t concerned with how you, your family and
your employees would cope with a medical emergency or just

That’s why you should take a look at Healthy Texas Small Group
health plans. This year-old, employer-based program designed
to help uninsured small-business owners offer health insurance
to their employees and families is available to the Greater Austin
Hispanic Chamber members.
Employers qualifying for Healthy Texas also must:
• Not have provided group insurance 12 months prior to Healthy
Texas application.
• Have at least 30 percent of employees receiving annual wages
at or below the federal poverty level ($32,670 in 2011)
• Sixty percent of eligible employees must enroll with at least
one of the employees being under the federal poverty level.
• The employer must pay at least 50 percent of the premium
costs for employees.
