GAHCC Launches Website on December 1st

The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is
pleased to announce the launch of its Web 2.0 enhanced
web site on December 1, 2009.
Designed by Envision Creative Group, the website now
offers an information portal on Hispanic demographics
in the Central Texas region. Funded by the City of Austin,
the portal will provide statistical data on the Hispanic population, income and purchasing power. In addition, the
portal will provide an insight to the Hispanic Quality of Life
Initiative as well as additional resources provided by other
organizations such as the Pew Hispanic Center.
Among its new features, the web site also offers easy
access to the Hispanic Chamber’s events calendar and
social media sites. Visit our newly enhanced website at
www.gahcc.org.

Hispanic Chamber Happenings
On October 28th the GAHCC, in partnership with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office,
hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of their new jail facility,
Building 12, at the Correctional Complex in Del Valle.

Celebrando Austin is the new tagline for our Annual Awards and
Installation Banquet, the GAHCC’s signature event of 37 years. The
banquet will still consist of distinguished awards, the installation
of the new Board of Directors, and live music. Celebrando Austin
will celebrate the beauty and prosperity of the city we live in! The
Celebrando Austin Awards Banquet is a new and improved adaptation of our Annual Awards and Installation Banquet.

Save the Date MECA Holiday Reception

ark your calendars for the Multi Ethnic Chamber Alliance
(MECA) Holiday Reception on Thursday, December 10, 2009
from 6:00-8:30 p.m. The event will be held at the beautiful Hilton
Austin Hotel. Members of the Austin Asian American, Capital
City African American, and Greater Austin Hispanic Chambers of
Commerce will embrace the spirit of the Texas Hill Country while
they mingle and enjoy a complimentary evening of appetizers,
networking and holiday cheer.
The Holiday Reception is one of many ways MECA recognizes its
members, partners and sponsors for their support throughout
the year. The reception will include a holiday raffle drawing for
Chamber members, offering them a chance to win great prizes.
The reception will also be open to the general public as we
welcome one and all to celebrate the wonderful Holiday
season with the Ethnic Chambers and their members. Chamber
Members should bring a wrapped toy, suitable for elementary
children, as their price for admission. All gifts will be donated to
local schools and organizations representative of each Chamber.
For ease of distribution, please note the age and gender on each
gift.
Admission for future Chamber members is $20.00 and can be
paid at the door.

Ben Deleon Receives National Big Brother of the Year Award
Ben Deleon Recibe el Premio Nacional “Big Brother” del Año

Ben Deleon, an Austin native
and an attorney at Deleon &
Washburn, was the recipient
of the 2009 National Big
Brother of the Year Award,
given by Big Brothers Big Sisters.
This national non-profit
organization facilitates
one-on-one relationships
between adult professionals
and young people. Ben was
matched with now 11 year
old Anthony, and the two
have cultivated a relationship that has developed into a life
changing experience for both of them. During a recent interview
with Josh Garza, GAHCC Education Committee Liaison, Ben described his experiences as a Big.
Josh Garza- What advantages were present for you as an individual
in connecting with your Little Brother, Anthony?
Ben Deleon- There were two main advantages that I felt Anthony
and myself gained from the relationship. From the beginning, for
me, it was explaining the importance of education to Anthony, and
detailing how education will help him and his family meet future
goals. Also, another advantage for me was learning from Anthony
while we discussed his daily routines in his school and home life. I
was moved by his strength and influenced by his drive.
JG-How did you help Anthony overcome his daily obstacles?
BD- I mainly listened and remained a constant presence in his life.
For me to be a constant presence in Anthony’s life, I had to build a
bond based on trust that enabled me to open the communication
lines between us.
JG-How did you show Anthony examples of what you have accomplished or overcome to meet your personal goals in life?
BD- I showed Anthony what my daily routine consisted of, from
work to school life. This allowed Anthony to gain insight of what it
takes to balance both worlds when faced with various obstacles.

BD- Yo le enseñé a Anthony lo que hacía en mi rutina diaria, desde la vida
escolar hasta el trabajo. Esto permitió que Anthony tuviera una mejor
perspectiva de lo que se necesita para balancear ambos mundos cuando
uno se enfrenta a varios obstáculos.

Border Media Announces Changes in Radio Stations

In October 2009, Border Media announced the loss of Austin’s
leading Spanish Radio Programming Digital 104.9 and La Ley 98.9.
Although Border Media regrets the loss of their Spanish Pop and
Regional music formats, they will continue to support the Hispanic
Community through established relationships and community initiatives.
Border Media is one of the nation’s leading media communities
with 29 radio stations and online properties. Over the past year the
company that began as BMP radio has developed into Border Media. Transforming from a traditional broadcasting company, Border
Media provides listeners with a two-way media enterprise by utilizing audience feedback to create their programs. With the goal of
being a public servant to their markets, Border Media brings original programming to their listeners that reflect the local culture and
diversity.
In Austin, Border Media has launched 98.9 “The Big Talker”, which
includes the Bob & Tom show, Austin’s legendary Sammy Allred,
and Live & Local with Sean Rima broadcasting on KXBT/ Leander,
Austin.
The change of format is Austin’s next generation of talk radio, which
is diversified due to its centric views and topics of discussion. Listeners are encouraged to participate by calling in to the hotline at (512)

reviews, pop culture and more. National and local talents provide

Dripping Springs, Austin.
The potential for advertisers to brand themselves on these new FM
talk radio stations, which serves an audience of a qualified demographic, will prove to be a great return on investment. “The new FM
Talk dial has information and reflects issues that we all share cross

Jeanne McLeod and Rene Campos, GAHCC Ambassadors of the Month

The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber Ambassadors are the goodwill “arm” of the Chamber and thus are charged with extending the hand of
friendship to new, current and future members alike. The Ambassadors promote retention by assisting members in maximizing their Chamber
membership, welcoming new members and attending ribbon cuttings and other Chamber events overall. The Chamber also relies on the
Ambassadors to serve as a communication link between the Chamber and its members by relaying information between members, identifying
member concerns, and garnering support for the Chamber. An Ambassador of the Month is awarded each month and is recognized in the
GAHCC Noticias e-newsletter and monthly Power Networking Breakfast. Additionally, one hard-working Ambassador will be awarded the
Ambassador of the Year and will be recognized at the GAHCC Annual Banquet.
The GAHCC would like to recognize Jeanne McLeod and Rene Campos as our Ambassadors of the Month.
Jeanne, born and raised in San Antonio, has been in
the Austin area for over ten years. She earned
her bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in San
Antonio, Texas. Jeanne has been an employee
of the Hertz Corporation for over seven years
in various management positions. She
currently is in charge of the passenger
vehicle rental solutions for the Temple,
Killeen and Austin area.
She is also an Ambassador for the Round
Rock Chamber as well as the San Antonio
Stock Show and Rodeo. Jeanne belongs
to the Sertoma Club helping children
with hearing deficits. Her main goal as an
Ambassador for the Hispanic Chamber is to service an area of our
community that needs to connect in order to grow and prosper.
Loyalty and energy are the qualities she embraces while working
with the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Rene Campos, an Account Executive with Horizon,
Printing was born and raised in Austin, Texas.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with
a lifelong career in sales, Rene’s experience ranges
from advertising, marketing research and more
recently experience in the printing industry.
Rene is married with five children and two
grandchildren.
Rene has been involved in several organizations,
served as the President of the Austin Advertising
Federation, President of the American
Marketing Association of Pittsburgh and
President of the Hispanic Chamber of Pittsburgh.

The time is now to apply for the GAHCC 2010 Ambassador Program! Only a few Chamber
members shall be selected, will you be that person?
The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC) Ambassadors are the goodwill
“arm” of the Chamber and are thus charged with extending the hand of friendship to new,
current and future members alike. The GAHCC Ambassadors promote retention by assisting members in maximizing their Chamber membership, welcoming new members and
attending ribbon cuttings and other Chamber events. The Chamber also relies on the
Ambassadors to serve as a communication link between the Chamber and its members
by relaying information to and from members, identifying member concerns and garnering support for the Chamber.
All Ambassadors should be in a position to have some autonomy in the use of his/her
time for the fulfillment of their Ambassador duties. Applicants must have managerial
approval to actively participate in the Program. Will you be the Ambassador of the Year?

The GAHCC and the Texas Governor’s Office
Travel to Guadalajara to Foster Opportunities for Small Businesses

An unprecedented project took flight in
2008 with the development of NextDooring,
an initiative that promotes international
partnerships and business opportunities
between Texas and Mexico, particularly
Guadalajara and the state of Jalisco.
Since then, the Mexican state of Jalisco
has expressed interest in developing an
engaged partnership with Texas to drive
international trade, primarily in the area of
technology. The state and federal governments in Mexico have invested heavily in
the technology industry in Jalisco; the state
is quickly gaining the reputation of the
“Mexican Silicon Valley”.
Andy Martinez, GAHCC President/CEO and
Robert Melvin, Director of the Small Business Division of the Texas Governor’s Office,
traveled to Guadalajara in August of this
year. The purpose of the trip was to
introduce Mr. Melvin to the Jalisco
Governor’s Office and establish a prosperous
relationship between the two offices with
the GAHCC being the link between the two
states.

Desde entonces, el estado de Jalisco en México
ha expresado un gran interés en desarrollar un
acuerdo con el estado de Texas para promover
oportunidades de comercio internacional,
primordialmente en el área de la tecnología.
Esto se debe a que tanto el gobierno estatal
como federal Mexicano han hecho inversiones
significativas en la industria de la tecnología de
Jalisco; lo cual le ha dado al estado la reputación como el “Silicon Valley” de México.

Impact Leaders Make a Pledge for Education

Over the past two years, the GAHCC Education Foundation has
partnered with Austin ISD to help support the High School Redesign
Initiatives by having community meetings with key stakeholders.
On November 19th, at the Sheraton Hotel, over 100 Impact Leaders
from the Austin area listened to Dr. Carstarphen’s keynote speech as
the new Superintendent of the Austin Independent School District.
She shared her vision and the strategic direction the school district is
heading.
The Impact Leaders also signed the “Power of 5” pledge that promises to:
* To invite 5 Community Members, Parents, or Students to attend the
Hispanic Futures Conference at Travis High School on December 5th
from 8:45 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.
* To share with 5 Business Owners importance of AISD’s Attendance Campaign.
* To recruit 5 Middle School Mentors for the Austin Partners in Education Mentorship Program.
* To attend an Education Advocacy Training.
* To share with 5 students the “Para Una Buena Vida” message.

Graduate Ready: College, Career, Life?

The GAHCC Education Foundation will host this year’s 2nd Hispanic
Futures Conference. Key sponsors will include Burger King, IBM, and the
City of Austin.
Hundreds of students from area high schools are expected to attend the
conference on December 5th at Travis High School located at 1211 East
Oltorf Street. The conference will start at 8:15 a.m. with breakfast and
registration. Lunch will be sponsored by Burger King.
At this year’s event, parents and students will learn more about preparing
for and enrolling in college. At the conference, speakers and exhibits will
provide information, materials and hands-on experiences that will help
to advance academic achievement.
