The GAHCC Capital of
Texas Small Business Awards
luncheon will honor seven
exceptional small businesses
on September 14th at the Hilton Austin Hotel.
These small businesses and organizations will
be recognized for their business accomplishments in their respective fields and for their
contributions to the community. A nominee’s
business leadership, special skills, notable
community contributions and overall achievements were some of the criteria used to select
the finalists. Texas Supreme Court Justice
Eva Guzman will be the keynote speaker
at the Capital of Texas Awards Luncheon.
Justice Guzman is the first Latina to serve on
the Texas Supreme Court and was recently
recognized at one of the “101 Most Influential
Leaders in the Latino Community.”

Austin and Mexico join in celebrating milestones in history

Throughout 2010, Austin will join Mexico in
commemorating two significant milestones
in Mexico’s history: the Bicentennial of the
1810 Independence of Mexico and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. These two anniversaries
are being celebrated through a series of events here in Central Texas. I
would like to personally thank the Consul General of Mexico in Austin
for providing this opportunity for the Austin community to share in
these historical celebrations and to learn more about Mexican history.
“In order to better understand the present and future, one must look
to the past. Although Mexico has a vastly diverse culture, its people
are united in these celebrations. It is a privilege to have Austin join
us with much enthusiasm this 2010, when we celebrate 200 years of
proudly being Mexican,” said Rosalba Ojeda, Consul General of Mexico
in Austin.

suma a México en la conmemoración de dos
eventos de gran magnitud en la historia de
México: el Bicentenario de la Independencia de
México de 1810 y el Centenario de la Revolución
Mexicana de 1910. Ambos aniversarios se han estado celebrando a través de
ciertos eventos en el Centro Texas Central. Le agradezco personalmente al
Cónsul General de México en Austin, la oportunidad que se ofrece a la comunidad de Austin de conocer más acerca de la historia de México y de celebrar
conjuntamente estos eventos históricos. “Para tener un mejor entendimiento

AHRMA Celebrates 60 Years

The Austin Human Resource Management Association (AHRMA) is
proud to celebrate its 60th year of service, support and dedication to
the Human Resources profession. In honor of this special occasion, AHRMA will be hosting an Annual Conference on August 19-20, 2010. The
Annual Conference offer tracks in the follow fields: Legal, Technology/
Social Media, Leadership, Healthcare and Business Acumen. By attending the Annual Conference, attendees may apply for Recertification
Credit for approved sessions on an hour for hour basis. Additionally,
keynote speaker Dr. Bob Nelson will be presenting on August 20th.

Equity versus Senior Debt

The GAHCC has recently visited with several companies that have been facing the
question of equity or senior debt. The good
news is that businesses are growing and for
the most part there is money available for viable, established companies. So, when you
are growing and equity is an option, most of
the time obtaining a senior lending facility is
a much easier and less costly option.
Rule number one for an entrepreneur should be to keep as much equity in their business as possible. For example, we recently visited with
a company that had a product with very explosive growth potential.
Sadly, this entrepreneur had given up 60% of their business to get to
market. Now they are looking for more capital to fund growth. The
business was completely out of control, constrained from growth and
now looking for more capital. This avoidable situation could potentially cost the inventor millions of dollars.
In order to avoid a similar situation, look for good advice
from qualified advisors before seeking additional capital. The

The Importance of Understanding your Credit Score

As my father told me when I first came to the
United States, “Everything is based on credit in
America”. Your credit score is essential to take
advantage of the American commerce system
and to achieve financial success. If debt is cancer you credit score is chemotherapy.

Understanding your credit score is one of the
best ways to tackle debt. The reason is simple.
The more you familiarize yourself with the factors affecting your credit score, the more you can improve your score. A better credit score
helps you qualify for better interest rates when buying a house, a car,
refinancing, applying for student loans, lines of credit or consolidating
debt. Some necessary debt below 8% APR may be considered “good
debt”.
Credit cards are the worst financial instrument for obtaining goods or
services. As a financial strategist I emphasize that credit cards should
be the last resort, unless you use less than 50% of your credit limit and
pay them off before the end of each billing cycle. Forget the idea of
having many conventional credit cards or buying expensive goods
with credit cards to improve your credit score. That is the ultimate
American fallacy.
Note the credit score that qualifies you to obtain a debt ranges from
300-850 and it is composed of the following factors: 35%-Payment History, 30%-Level of debt, 15%-Length of Credit History, 10%-New Credit,
10%-Credit Diversification.

el crédito, mayor va a ser tu enfoque para mejorar el puntaje. Consecuentemente, un mejor puntaje lo calificará para mejores tasas de interés a la hora
de adquirir una casa, un automóvil, aplicar para líneas de créditos, préstamos
para educación, refinanciar o consolidar deudas existentes. Estas son algunas
de las deudas calificadas como necesarias y si podemos tenerlas por debajo
del 8% APR pueden ser consideradas “buenas” o mejor dicho menos malas.
Como bien confirman mis pasadas columnas, las tarjetas de crédito son el
peor vehículo para adquirir un bien o recibir un servicio. De hecho, como estratega financiero hago hincapié en que las tarjetas de crédito deben ser el
último recurso para comprar, a menos que usted tenga la disciplina de usarlas
por debajo del 50% del límite y pagarlas completamente antes del final de su
ciclo de factura. Olvídese de la idea de tener muchas tarjetas de crédito convencionales o comprar costosos bienes con las tarjetas de crédito para mejorar
su puntaje crediticio. Eso es, “¡puro cuento!”.
Tenga en cuenta que el puntaje de crédito que lo califica para adquirir una
deuda oscila entre 300 - 850 y está compuesto por los siguientes factores: 35%
- Historia de pagos; 30% - Nivel de deudas; 15% - Historia de crédito; 10% - Aplicaciones; y 10% - Diversificación de crédito.

Product Marketing and Marketing professionals to teach to, learn from,

p.m. at the AT&T Conference center, attendees will be immersed in

provoking series of workshops that will organically
shape from attendee contributions. ProductCamp is
an un-conference, meaning that it is free to you! Your only cost is your participation - bring your
ideas, lead a session in your area of expertise, facilitate a roundtable
discussion, network or volunteer. This is your chance to share knowledge on any product management or marketing topic with your peers.
Host a session to demonstrate your leadership, practice your presentation skills, and have fun in a no-pressure environment. Traditional presentations, facilitated roundtables, workshops and other creative ideas
are encouraged.
