Honorable Mention:
Congratulations to Karen Corral, The University of
Texas at Austin 2014 Student of the Year!!
“For me, giving back
is the key to a happy
life because the
satisfaction
of
making a difference
in someone’s life is
something
that
cannot be bought—it
can
only
be
appreciated.”
Karen Corral was born in El Paso, Texas, to Paula Corral. “Life has presented some bumps in my path, but
with the help of God, and determination, I have overcome them,” says Karen, who lived in a foster care
shelter when she was six years old while her mother recovered in the hospital. As soon as she was able to join
her mother in the fields, Karen worked by her side harvesting onions. As a senior at Coronado High School,
Karen earned a 91 average and graduated at the top of her class. Karen’s mother has been her biggest
supporter in her extensive academic endeavors. Karen describes her primary passion as “helping others in any
way, shape or form,” a foundation that has motivated her to excel as a leader. As a result of her hard work and
determination, she has earned a full scholarship to St. Edward’s University, where she plans to pursue degrees
in biology and psychology with a minor in Japanese.
