National Board Certification (NBC) is a rigorous
performance-based
peerreview process designed
to recognize and reward
accomplished
teachers.
Candidates reflect on their
own classroom practices,
understanding of subject
material, and preparation
techniques. In addition to
preparing a portfolio with
videotapes of classroom
teaching, lesson plans,
student work samples, and
reflective essays, teachers
complete
assessment
exercises based on content
knowledge. Like Board
certification in many
professions, NBC is the
highest mark of accomplishment in teaching
and can take up to
three years to complete.
Only 3% of teachers nationwide have achieved it.

his April, Sacred Heart
High School in Lincoln
Heights will send students
to Washington D.C. for a
tour that the school hopes
to make an annual event.
“The Capital Adventure
trip is an opportunity
to
expand
students’
perspectives,” says Grant
Kinman, Sacred Heart’s
Social Studies instructor
and trip coordinator.
“Today, Congress is less
than 19% female, and of
those 98 women serving in
Congress only 9 are Latina.
We hope that through
this trip, these girls will
be empowered to envision
themselves as tomorrow’s
political leaders.”
The total cost of the trip
is $1,580 for each student.
This includes all airfare and
other transportation needs,
hotels, museum and exhibit
fees, meals, full-time tour
guides and security at the
hotels. So far, 23 students
hope to make the trip. They
are working hard on several
fundraising projects and

Lincoln Heights Loves a Parade
O
ver two thousand people attended the 10th
Annual Lincoln Heights Christmas Parade in
December. On parade were musical performers and
dancers of all types, drill teams, classic cars, horse
drawn carts, and local leaders in convertibles waving
to the crowd. Schools, local celebrities, government
officials, businesses, government agencies and nonprofits all participated, including your very own
Community Beacon represented by George Cabrera
and Bill Watkins. Richard Duran, of Thee Mr. Duran
Show, served as Celebrity Grand Marshal.

l Sereno’s Eastside Bike Club
(ESBC) celebrated the 1 year
anniversary of their SLOW ES
COOL rides with a tour of Boyle
Heights on January 5. The 20
mile bike tour included stops
at iconic eastside locations.
ESBC began hosting SLOW ES
COOL rides to interest people
in cycling. “Riding a bike is fun.
These rides create a space where
new riders feel welcomed and
can experience the ‘funness ‘of
riding with a group through
diverse neighborhoods” said
The Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council (LHNC)
set aside $4,000 to fund the festive, annual all-ages
event. This year’s LHNC Parade Committee was
lead by chair Vera Padilla who rallied a group of
energetic volunteers (including hundreds of Lincoln
High School students) whose contributions were
tremendous. Vera gave special thanks to District
1 Councilmember, Gil Cedillo who provided for
everyone’s comfort by funding restrooms, chairs,
tables, and canopies for the parade and festival.

formal dedication in late February,

Park Advisory Board Launched

he El Sereno Park Advisory

2014. The group has formed to
prioritize long and short term
goals for the El Sereno Recreation
Center and grounds. Advisory
Board members completed a Park
and Recreation Survey, developed
to help the department prioritize
needs. The survey will be
distributed to parents by coaches.
The group also discussed
accessing government grants to
address the site’s larger needs. It
is unclear whether grant writing
assistance is available from city
offices. Advisory Board meetings
are open to the public and take
place at 6:30 p.m. on the second

Power Play, started in 2010
by musician Bernie Garcia. Its
eight members and one stand-in
drummer, practice weekly in
the area. Popular entertainment
at many local events, the band’s
appearances include the Cynco
de Mayo Parade in Cypress
Park, Councilman Ed Reyes’
retirement celebration, Eagle
Rock Veteran’s Day Parades,
Channel 3’s El Monte Tonight,
and various VFW and American
Legion posts.
The
band’s
well-seasoned
members all have interesting
histories. Bernie Garcia, vocalist
and band leader, returned to music
in 1996 with the UpSeccions,
and has performed with
various local bands including
Everyday People, Ron & the
Rhythm
Review,
Sedillo
Brothers. He founded, The
L.A. Kammotion and Strive.
Trumpet player Bob Perino
E
playing since age 10, earned a
Bachelor of Music Education at
University of Illinois, and was
assigned to the United States
Army Band in Viet Nam. He has
played with Delaney & Bonnie,
the Disneyland Tomorrowland
Stage Group, toured with
1970’s rock opera Jesus Christ
Superstar, and written musical
shows for Wolfman Jack, Junior
Walker, and Gerome “Little
Anthony” Gourdine.
Power Play’s front woman,
Angelica “Angel” Flores, also plays
guitar, and percussion. Angel
has performed with After Dark,
Casual Company and Eastside
Groove. Vocalist Robert Rabago,
also on keyboard, guitar and
percussion, began with the band
Fascination in 1973, has backed
up Ralfi Pagan and played with
Nice n Easy and the Johnny
Chingas band Sting. Another

my hair out debating where
my spouse and I could have a
romantic dinner. Then it hit me;
a new restaurant had opened on
Huntington Drive. It was close
by, worth a try, and if we couldn’t
get in, well, better luck next year.
Our luck was good. Tikal
Restaurant
Cocina
Maya
specializes
in
Guatemalan
cuisine, something new to El
Sereno. Our friendly host was
co-owner Darwin Amador,
who displayed both admirable
attention to customer service
and a singular pride while
describing the distinctive dishes
on the menu. The modern yet
cozy décor fostered a romantic
ambience, resulting in one of our
best Valentine’s Days ever. I may
not remember what I ate (my
canned. Of the various robust
Guatemalan stews known as
Recados, the Pepian is a national
favorite for its tangy combination
of chicken and beef, chiles,
herbs, pumpkin and sesame
seeds, green beans and squash. I
had the HIlachas, a hearty beef,
tomato, red bell pepper, and
potato stew. Darwin suggested
crumbling the accompanying
tamalitos to add to the bowl.
Good idea, Darwin; it was great.
The Platos Grandes feature
grilled beef, chicken or pork as
well as the vegetarian Guisquil,
a steamed squash stuffed with
fresh cheese, tomato and onion.
Garnachas, mini corn tortillas
deep fried and topped with beef,
cabbage, carrot, and pickle,
garnished with grated dry
cheese and parsley, are another
favorite. Desserts include fried
Plantains con Crempope, a rum
eggnog cream and (my favorite)
the Mollete, a Guatemalan sweet
bread stuffed with egg battered
and fried rompope cream and
swimming in a sweet, warm red
wine sauce.
On weekends Tikal offers
breakfast fare like eggs, chorizo,
longaniza sausage, black beans,
fried plantains, and chirmol
(a Guatemalan salsa). A treat on
the beverage menu is Jamarindo,
a cold and lip-smacking concoction of hibiscus and tamarind
infused with mint and ginger.

The band’s name came about
when Bernie Garcia considered
the ice hockey term ‘power
play.’ It describes one team
having so many players in the

Ascot Hills Memories

M
ost days, you can look out
toward Ascot Hills and
take a little break from whatever
is on your mind. The fawncolored hills give a busy brain a
bit of a rest and provide peace
through your very own window.
Imagine, now, those hills dotted
with fleecy sheep, the sounds
of hymns drifting up from the
gentle slopes…this is what your
grandmother or mother may
remember about Ascot Hills.
Mine does.
Gloria Higuera Alva grew up
just across the tracks, on Ricardo
Street, during the 1940s and 50s.
When I was a girl, in the 1960s,
she would take my sisters and me
on an urban hike into Ascot Hills
to find mustard greens and to
slide down the prickly dry slopes
on flattened cardboard boxes. It
may be hard to imagine a mom
encouraging her child to be a
little delinquent, but mine would.
We’d walk to the top of Indiana
Avenue and, feeling guilty, I’d
follow her up the steep slope of
an empty lot (it’s still empty) up
the hill to the lower crest near
Huntington Drive—a hilltop
that hikers freely enjoy today.
“I think they were Basque,” my
mom says of the people who kept
sheep on the hills. “There weren’t
a lot of people who lived over
on this side during those days.”
But apparently folks crossed
Valley Boulevard for church.
“My mother would bring me
over here for tent revivals,” my
mother remembers, “Mama
called them ‘holy rollers’
because they’d fall down and
roll on the ground when they got
excited.” I never knew this
growing up, just as I never knew
the neighborhood was host to a
raceway that drew movie stars
and crowds to the hills for
speedsters and excitement. I only
remember sneaking up the hills,
like a trespasser, for the thrill
of feeling the wind on my face,
seeing at eye level the houses on
the Lincoln Heights hills, and
feeling far, far away from the
city. Now that the walking trails
are open to everyone—no more
sneaking!—there is much joy and
rest in the lovely gentle hills. My
husband and I had our first date
there; last year we took a walk at
dusk and saw white herons, frogs,
coyotes, owls and ducks…and a
movie being filmed. Neighbors
are making their own memories
of Ascot Hills now, kids have free
rein and the mysteries are a little
more accessible.
Ascot Hills park is open dawn
to dusk and is accessible by a
number of hillside trails. Formal
entrance to the park is located at
4371 Multnomah Street. Dogs on
leash welcomed.

Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB)

Community-Police
Advisory Board (C-PAB)
is a group of volunteers from
the residential and business
communities
assembled
to promote and assist with
community policing in the
area policed by the LAPD’s
Hollenbeck Division. C-PAB
meets regularly to discuss how
the LAPD can more effectively
police the area, and how
citizens can assist the LAPD
in its duties. C-PAB members
share information on crime and
quality of life issues observed,
such as increased graffiti, traffic
problems and gang activities.
Meetings are open to the public
and start at 6:30 p.m. on the
third Wednesday of each month,
at the LAPD Hollenbeck Station
(2111 E. 1st Street, Los Angeles).
Updates from Senior Lead
Officers, a Captain’s Report
including crime reports and
statistics, and C-PAB member
reports are heard. Guest
speakers present on issues
impacting the Hollenbeck area,
such as traffic control, auto theft
and safety, social media crimes,
street vending, and the parolee
process.
The Advisory Board’s activities
include a Neighborhood Watch
Training scheduled for this
Spring. Members have helped
organize and implement several
Community
Beautification
efforts and are sponsoring a
“Toys of Violence” collection.
They helped organize the local,
“National Night Out Against
Crime” and have been outspoken
in the effort to decrease the
number of Alcohol Licenses
within the Hollenbeck Area.
C-PAB members are to be
applauded for volunteering time,
energy and expertise in helping
to make our communities a
cleaner and safer place to live. To

photographic
evidence
of
a bobcat in Debs Park, the
expansive, hillside park that
borders Montecito Heights and
Monterey Hills.
Miguel Ordeñana, who was
involved in photographing
mountain lions in Griffith
Park, posted photos online of
the bobcat that were recently
taken by three cameras in the
northern section of the park.
In his blog, he said, “Although
the park is smaller than most
bobcat territories, it is larger
than most city parks and acts
as the local urban community’s
major link to nature. Also,
the picture validates the
preservation of small fragments
of habitat that historically have
been disregarded as valuable
carnivore habitat, especially
if they are possibly linked to
larger wildernesses. From an
urban bobcat conservation
standpoint, the presence of this
bobcat is helping us learn about
the potential value of small
habitat fragments linked by the
Arroyo Seco, the need to study
the value of the Arroyo Seco as a
wildlife corridor, and the ability
of bobcats to adapt to the urban
landscape.”

Jeff Chapman of the Audubon
Center in Debs Park, which

photograph the animal, said
reports of a bobcat began to
surface about a year ago but no
one had proof. He said the bobcat
that was photographed most
likely traveled down the Arroyo
Seco to reach the approximately
280-acre park, which is home
more than 40 species of birds, as
well as snakes, coyotes and other
wildlife
“This was definitive proof,” he
said of a bobcat in the park. “It’s
pretty exciting.” He advised park
visitors to stay on trails and keep
their dogs leashed.

(LAUSD) lost School Board member
Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte who
died in San Diego. LaMotte, first elected
in 2003, represented Board District 1,
including parts of South and Southwest
Los Angeles, the Crenshaw District, and
meeting the boundaries of Beverly Hills,
Culver City and Inglewood. Re-elected,
she was serving her third term.

Wagner in Lovell Wyoming
on April 6, 1931. He was
one of thirteen siblings. Ted
attended Rocky Mountain
College in Billings, Montana
on a football scholarship, graduated in
1953 and was drafted into the U.S. Army.
He earned a master’s degree at Colorado
State College. Ted’s teaching and coaching
career began in 1955 at Grass Range
High School in Montana and included
30 years of service to LAUSD, teaching
history and government, and coaching, at
Lincoln High School. Ted chose Lincoln
over Wilson because he was impressed by
Lincoln’s Vice Principal, Jim Tunney Jr.
Ted married Adella Rose Seidlitz, an
elementary school teacher whom he
referred to as his “rose among thorns.”
They eventually settled in La Mirada

years in the synthesis of the best of

monolingual English speaking
society. Latinos, Koreans, and
other latest Americans can teach
us that this is no longer necessary.
For the trilingual among us, you
have great puns to enjoy: How did

n December, at an event
in City Hall, Councilman
Huizar paid tribute to William
and Josephine Telles for
40 years of service to the
community of El Sereno.
In 1951, the couple moved to
El Sereno where they raised
their three children and,
in 1973, opened El Sereno
Income Tax. With pencils,
calculators, carbon paper
and ‘old fashioned ‘stamps
and mail, they prepared
individual and small business
tax statements, working long
17-hour days Many during the
tax season. Many years later,
they are still preparing tax
returns but are filing many of
them electronically.
In 1979, after moving to
their current location at 5004
Huntington Drive, William
and Josephine welcomed
their daughter, Linda, into the
business. The small, familyrun income tax preparation
business grew to 6 employees
and expanded their offerings
to include Notary Services and
Real Estate sales and financing.
Together the couple has
served generations of families
in the community. The
grandchildren of the original

been a fixture in the community
for over 42 years since starting
his automotive repair business
in 1972. His family’s roots in the
area go back much further and
Greg’s mechanical aptitude is no
accident. In the 1930’s his father,
Harry Eisele, raced at Legion
Ascot Park speedway under the
pseudonym “Bud Rose.” Harry
used a fabricated name because
his folks forbade him from the
dangerous pursuit of racing.
After retiring from racing, Harry
opened a machine shop at the
corner of Fowler and Fishburn.
His entrepreneurial spirit and
love of motorized machinery was
passed on to his son Greg.

Salesian sacks Mission Prep in CIF–SS
Football Championship Game

n December 7, 2013, just
north of the majestic Sears
and Roebuck building, a legend
was born. The 2013 football
season ended grandly for Boyle
Heights’ own Bishop Mora
Salesian High School Mustangs
with the defeat of San Luis
Obispo’s Mission Prep Royals
and the capture of the CIF-SS
XIII Championship.
The Mustangs (11-2) played a
hard-fought game at Keegan
Stadium against the Royals (11-3),
with a hint of retribution for
last year’s 54-26 Northeast
Division semifinal loss to the
same team. From opening
kickoff to final whistle, the
Mustangs never buckled. Their
multi-set variety offense was no
match for the Royals defense
and their base 4/3 defense held
the Royals from ever crossing
the goal line.
It appeared the football gods
were with the Mustangs from
the start as Royals running
back Patrick Laird sprained his
ankle on the very first play from
scrimmage. Two plays later,
Royals quarterback Patrick
Miller threw an interception.
Although the Mustangs took
the ball deep in Royals territory
and fumbled it away, the Royals
could not capitalize. The first
quarter ended 0-0, but with
the start of the second quarter
it was all Mustang football.
The Mustangs scored 27
unanswered points and 7 more
in the third quarter defeating
the Royals 34-0.

Mustangs defense held Royals
quarterback Miller to just
70 yards in passing with two
interceptions, and running back
Laird to a season low of 43 yards
rushing. Salesian’s quarterback
Blaise Booth passed for 179
yards connecting with Chris
Pryor for two touchdowns, a
53 yard screen pass to Jeremy
Kelly, and a 17 yard touchdown
pass to Marquis Ware. Felipe
Meza rushed for 149 yards on
23 carries.
Coach Angelo Jackson said, “last
year they put it on us pretty well.”
Not this year. As the victory bell
rang a vivacious crowd wearing
Salesian’s signature black, sky
blue and white stormed the
field to congratulate the Mighty
Mustangs.
With three players committed
to the University of Arizona,
Salesian will see thirty-two
players returning for another
exciting season in 2014. Will
Salesian play Cathedral in the
future? Coach Jackson said,
“Maybe.”
