1.11. Objetivos del curso / Course objectives
By the end of this course students should be familiar with the main varieties
of English in the world (geographical, social and stylistic), as well as with the
main factors influencing the spread of English as a lingua franca. The critical
readings are meant to raise an awareness of the way in which language,
culture, power and identity interact.

Métodos docentes / Teaching methodology
1. In-class sessions. Every week, (i) a two-hour session will be devoted to
a brief lecture on the weekly topic, solving the weekly assignments and
discussing the weekly reading, and (ii) an hour session devoted to
seminars, exercises, text analysis, audiovisual activities, etc.
2. Independent study & team work. Every week, students will have to
complete an assignment which, in all cases, will require at least (i)
preparing weekly readings for each in-class session, (ii) submitting
different tasks and (iii) preparing a short research project at the end of
the course.
3. Tutorials. Students should come to office hours to check thier weekly
tasks and learn how to improve them as the course proceeds.

Assessment will be continuous. The final grade will depend on:

Class participation & completion of weekly assignments by due date
(30%) = 3 points
Tasks (50%) = 5 points.
Final project (20%) = 2 points
Final Exam only for those who do not attend class nor submit tasks.
Those students who do not pass the course will have to sit a written exam and
submit a project in the «convocatoria extraordinaria». No passing grade will
be given for the exam alone.
