1.11. Objetivos del curso / Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the basic structural
and bibliographical conventions of academic writing. They will have written
several properly researched and referenced short/medium-length academic
essays for a peer audience and will have gained a first experience in providing
and utilizing critical/supportive peer feedback.
By the end of the grammar component, students will be familiar with the
concept of register, showing understanding of the relationship between
variation in context of situation and choice of lexis and grammatical
structures. They will deepen their formal awareness of clause combining and
connectors, mood and modality. They will have carried out several analyses of
samples of spoken and written language, in which they show how lexical and
grammatical choices contribute to the realisation of register variables.

Students must obtain a positive grade (i.e. more than zero) in each of
the two components (Writing and Grammar), or they will receive a No
Evaluado notification in the Actas.
In each of the two components (Writing and Grammar), students must
obtain a positive grade (i.e. more than zero - not necessarily a passing
grade) in BOTH COURSE WORK and EXAM, or they will receive a No
Evaluado notification overall in the Actas. For example, a student in
Grammar who receives a 0 for coursework and a 6 for the exam will
receive a No Evaluado for the final assessment in Grammar, and
therefore a No Evaluado for PLM Inglés III as a whole, irrespective of
the grade achieved in the other component (Writing).
Students only have to repeat in a 2nd convocatoria the component(s)
failed. The grades for the passed components are held for the 2nd
convocatoria.
Students cannot receive more than 4.9 if they have failed either
component, no matter what the course average may be.
Coursework that is not handed in at the time/date specified by the
professor will receive a 0 grade, unless there is valid medical reason.

Writing
● Assessment for writing is divided into 2 parts: Coursework (50% of
assessment) & Examination (50% of assessment). Students must pass
BOTH the Coursework part of the evaluation AND the Examination part
of the evaluation. If a student fails one part of the evaluation, then the
grade received by the student will be less than 5 (i.e. a fail overall for
writing) even if the calculated average is above 5. In these cases the
grade given will be 4.9 and the students will have to go to the 2nd
convocatoria examination).
● Students who fail the writing component in the 1st convocatoria have
to do an exam in the 2nd convocatoria which counts for 60% of the final
assessment. The other 40% is retained from the original first
assessment (originally 100% on first convocatoria, reduced to 50% on
the 2nd convocatoria). This 40% is not recoverable.
● Attendance is compulsory
Grammar
• To pass the grammar component students need to pass both the exam
and the course work. Students who pass the exam but not the course
work, will have to resit the grammar exam in the second convocatoria
if the 1st convocatoria exam grade is below 60%.
