INCREASE OUR FAITH
Today’s Gospel passage falls under the category that
has come to be known as the “hard sayings” of Jesus.
Hard to understand, hard to apply to life today.
The Apostles’ request, “increase our faith,” is in
response to a previous “hard saying” about how
frequently we are called upon to forgive others.
Curiously, Jesus seems rather unforgiving in responding to their request, or in describing the
manner in which they are to serve others.
Jesus uses exaggerations to wake us up to how God
is present in our lives, and how we are urged to live if
God is with us. None of us is called upon to uproot trees
or cast mountains into the sea. The faith we have is
adequate for the task we are called upon to do: spread
the gospel by our witness. And living that witness is
done not for self-gratification or recognition, but out of
the joy of helping the world to hear the Good News.

El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy pertenece a la categoría
llamada “lecciones difíciles” de Jesús. Difíciles de entender, difíciles de aplicar hoy día. La petición de los apóstoles,
“aumenta nuestra fe” es en respuesta a la previa
“lección difícil” sobre cuántas veces somos llamados a
perdonar a los demás. Curiosamente, Jesús no parece
muy dispuesto a perdonar al responder a su petición, o
al describir la manera en que han de servir a los demás.
Jesús usa exageraciones para demostrarnos
cómo está Dios presente en nuestra vida, y cómo somos llamados a vivir si Dios está con nosotros. Ninguno de nosotros está
llamado a desarraigar árboles o a lanzar montañas al mar. La
fe que tenemos es adecuada para la tarea a que hemos sido
llamados: esparcir el evangelio con nuestro ejemplo. Y vivir ese
testimonio no buscando autosatisfacción o reconocimiento, sino por el gozo de ayudar al mundo a oír la Buena Nueva.

Fines de Semana de San Cirilo
The first weekend of the month has traditionally
been our Welcome Weekend and beginning this
weekend, 5 and 6 October, these weekends will
have a slightly new twist. Several ministries of the
parish will each present their own flavor by providing light snacks and fellowship after all of the
Masses. It will be a chance to get to know the many ministries
at St. Cyril. The October get-together is being sponsored by the
Development Board of St. Cyril. In addition to snacks and fellowship, Just Coffee will be sold along with St. Cyril T-Shirts
and Tote Bags. Stop by, say hi and join the fun!

es nuestro Fin de Semana de Bienvenida y a partir
de este fin de semana, 5 y 6 de octubre, estos
fines de semana tendrán un Nuevo sesgo. Algunos

PCIC (Pima County Interfaith Council) will hold a Community
Issues Accountability Session at Sacred Heart Church located
at 601 E. Ft. Lowell (just west of First Avenue). All the candidates for the contested City Council races have confirmed
their attendance and other public officials will be in attendance. Join other civic minded faith community members for
an example of democracy in action. The key themes to be addressed are systemic change and proposing concrete solutions to end poverty. See what ideas the candidates and other
officials have and support the solutions we propose.
PCIC, (Pima County Interfaith Council) llevará a cabo una sesión sobre la Responsabilidad de los asuntos Comunitarios, en
la Iglesia Sacred Heart, localizada en 601 E. Fort Lowell,(un

for our Maintenance Fund

This collection which we take up 4 times a year,
but to which parishioners can make their contribution at any time during the 3-month period, is specifically for large expense repairs to our facilities.
In the first quarter of this Fiscal Year, we have had
to do some major maintenance work on the church’s air conditioning system (redoing the insulation on the pipes, and
cleaning out the cooling tower). We also had to do replace all
the fan belts on the older air conditioning system in Nicholson
Hall.
The two gates into the Parish Office Patio area were refurbished and handles with locks were installed. There were two
nights during August in which we sustained vandalism damage to the windows of the office building and the door to the
St. Vincent de Paul pantry shed from which many items were
stolen.
