On one hand we have the Teachers of the Law, the Scribes, the Pharisees, and the rich who considered themselves ‘Just’ and on the other hand, we have the Publicans, the Tax Collectors, the widows, and the poor who never dared raised up their heads while praying but nevertheless ‘Just’ in the eyes of the Lord. The first group of worshippers was not really bad persons. Actually they became teachers and experts of religion because they loved and were interested in religion but the very respect people showed them led them to overlook in themselves many wrongs that in anybody else would be severely censured. No wonder “they even devoured the widow’s and the orphan’s goods while making a show of long prayers” (Gospel). On the other hand, the second group of worshippers was the only one from among the congregation who made retribution to God as He truly deserved. With no social and financial influence and even moral dignity to boast about, having practically nothing, somehow found ways to give to God part of the little they have. The poor widow “gave from her poverty and put in everything she had, her very living” (Gospel). Only such person in such terrible condition is capable of giving themselves unconditionally and sacrificing practically everything as did the poor widow of Zarephath (1st Reading) who willingly shared with the prophet Elijah her and her son’s last handful of flour and little oil to eat – and die. But Jesus, the One and only true ‘Just’ is the prototype of such individuals: He emptied and “sacrificed himself to take away the sins of the multitude” (2nd Reading). Despite being sinless, He unashamedly numbered Himself among sinners to effectively carry out God’s plan of redemption by His sacrificial death on the Cross. And because of His total obedience to God’s will, justice have been finally served to the oppressed, food to the hungry, freedom to prisoners, and sight to the blind as the Lord protected the stranger, sustained the widow and the orphan (Responsorial Psalm). Fr. Jimmy B. Hababag Confessions Saturday: 3:15-4pm & 5:30-6:15pm Like us on NOVEMBER 11, 2012 YOUR CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN DOWNTOWN BOCA RATON STEWARDSHIP CORNER GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANTS APPEAL So, I asked Monsignor how are we going to pay for all these wonderful Journey Forward Initiatives? Well, he said you could stand out in front of church and sing Danny Boy. I said well they might pay me to stop singing. But how about the Good and Faithful Servants Appeal. It worked in the old days when the Barbarians were breaking down the monasteries and taking the food from our soup kitchens. The Faithful saved us before with a few pence here and a farthing there, and even a chicken in the collection basket. Well, Monsignor says it’s worth a try. The Barbarians are at it again and we must strengthen our Church and School and Ministries. And Journey Forward is the Way. So Let us appeal once again to our St. Joan Good and Faithful Servants to dig down and put a little extra in the Offertory Collection and save us once again. So I said I don’t have to sing Danny Boy? No, he said, just smile, pass the basket and say thank you. Amen. - Brother Steward God Bless, and Pray for all our brothers, sisters, and families up North! INDEX PG. 3 - Msgr. This is even truer when the gift is totally unearned or unwarranted. Our faith relationship with God is just such a gift, perfectly gratuitous. This foundational love relationship with which God graces us opens up the door to so many other gifts. We receive the gift of divine life within us and our whole life is changed. We learn of our true identity as a beloved creation of God with an eternal purpose and destiny. We are gifted with new capacities for compassion and generosity. We receive a “new heart” and an unlimited capacity to forgive and to nurture. God’s divine self-gift in Jesus Christ is the gift par excellence. We are graced with this gift in the Church. If we take the time to reflect upon the extent of our giftedness, we often ask the question “What can I do to say thank you”? The answer that our faith gives is “Be a good steward”. Out of gratefulness, we are to show to others that which we have received. We are to gift others out of our experience of deep love and mercy. Thus we become instruments of God’s peace in an often cold and unloving world. The Christian’s vocation “in this place” is one of witness and example of God’s presence and creativity. It is possible to be creative in many ways. We can write, paint, compose, build or beautify. We can create new life and new worlds filled with possibilities. Whatever we choose, it should be a gift from us to others that is free and generous. At Saint Joan of Arc, we have hundreds of ways of giving the gift of self in generosity to others through our ministries. In fact, ministerial witness and service define our parish culture. We are people who serve one another in love and humility. We also reach out beyond ourselves in caring ministry that includes all in need. This is the great truth that we love generously not because others are Catholic but because we are Catholic. Each year at this time, we call attention to the stewardship ministries that so characterize our parish and express our generosity. This year we are also rejoicing in Fifty Three Years of love and care for our children, of faith and of families. The key to stewardship is involvement and personal presence. Each one of us can say “Thank You” through the triad of time, talent and treasure. Please take a few moments to reflect upon your giftedness and your response. Please check out what opportunities exist to make a difference in your families and in our parish. We need everybody so that we can “grow to full stature” and become more completely the “Body of Christ, fully alive”. There has never been a better time in our parish’s history, than now, through Journey Forward, for us all to volunteer generously. Stewardship is a way of life that shouts out “Thank You” in words and deeds. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw NOVEMBER 11 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3 WishList S T. J O A N O F A R C CHURCH & SCHOOL 1. AT 9:00 BLESSING OF BREAD: BLESSING OF BREAD: On the occasion of the Thanksgiving Dinner, we are inviting individuals and families to bring your own BREAD to be blessed. The Bread symbolizes Christ who is the true Bread of Life. The blessing thus will take place within the Holy Mass. Despite life’s many ups and downs, still there are many wonderful things we should be grateful to the Lord. Joining the Holy Eucharist is the best way of expressing this heartfelt gratitude. May all of us have a blessed Thanksgiving Day. PRAYER AN ELECTION PRAYER AFTERAFTER AN ELECTION God of all nations, Father of the human family, we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise and the many blessings of democracy we enjoy in these United States of America. We ask for your protection and guidance for all who devote themselves to the common good, working for justice and peace at home and around the world. We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants, those who will serve us as president, as legislators and judges, those in the military and law enforcement. Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord, with a common purpose, dedication, and commitment to achieve liberty and justice in the years ahead for all people, and especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst. Amen. Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, revised edition (Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2007). The "Prayer After an Election" by Cardinal Adam Maida, Archbishop of Detroit, is used with permission. THE MASS MINISTRY THE MASS MINISTRY The Liturgical Committee of St. Joan of Arc has recommended starting a new ministry that will provide Adult Servers for the Masses on the weekends. The name of the ministry is called Ministry of Adult Servers Society or “MASS.” This special ministry will not replace the Children Altar Servers. We are asking individuals to come forward and volunteer to use their talents to help in this important Liturgical Ministry. Members of MASS will be asked to serve at various Masses during the weekends to serve the priest, especially when there is no deacon available. They will also be serving on special occasions. Training in the liturgy and the rubrics of serving will be given to anyone interested in this new ministry. No goblins and ghouls in this program: in keeping with the teaching of the Church, students focused on honoring the many holy men and women who gave their lives to the service of Christ. The program included information on what a saint is as well as a litany of prayer to the saints depicted by the students. This program is always a highlight of the school year and is fondly remembered by older students for how much they learned and how much fun they had portraying their favorite saints. Special thanks to Mrs. Pat Morgan for overseeing the many songs in the program and to the Grade 3 Homeroom teachers for organizing this special event, Mrs. Bridget Briggs, 3A and Miss Tiffany Alexopoulos, 3B. NOVEMBER 11 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 15 MINISTERIO HISPANO.
