To ancient Hebrews a covenant was a sacred and forever binding oath. It was a treaty or agreement (contract) between two unequal parties (e.g. between kings and subject nobles), freely entered into, binding forever throughout all generations and sealed in blood. See Genesis 15. Animals were cut into two, placed on the ground, and the parties of the treaty walked between the halves of the animals. The sign was striking: it meant that if I do not keep my word may I be sliced in two as these animals have been. In our first reading Moses strikes a covenant with God: half the blood is sprinkled on the people and half is splashed on the altar (between the Israelites and God). Jesus mediated a new covenant. Terms of the covenant: “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart.” (1 Peter 2:9) Actually, our covenant is made between Jesus and our heavenly Father and we enter this covenant by our baptism when we are incorporated into Christ. The blood is the sacrificial blood of Jesus on the cross, pre-enacted in the last Supper and in each and every Mass. We renew the covenant and Jesus renews and ratifies the covenant in our behalf at Mass. Make the words of Mass your own. This is my body – this is my commitment to be the person you want me to be. This is my blood – I will be faithfully loyal even if it means my blood. All that the Lord has said I will heed and do. In my capacity as your Pastor, I accepted this unanimous approval of the Plan. It is now our blueprint for the future. This final step of the planning phase was the outcome of a year of concentrated work that included electronic surveys, Visioning and Initiative Writing parishioner assemblies, multifaceted research on the Boca Raton community, analyzing, editing, goal writing and initiative writing. More than one thousand parishioners were involved in one or another stage or task of the planning process. It is fair to say that this process has produced a truly collaborative and consultative plan that expresses the identity, vision, values and creativity of our parish. This will be the first in a series of reports to the parish on the status of Journey Forward. In future bulletins, I will address the implementation strategies and the timetable for implementation. Please take some time to read and reflect upon our parish Mission Statement, Vision Statement, Core Values Statement and the Six Goals of the Journey Forward Plan. The future implementation of our Plan will require the collaboration of many parishioners with the Six Goal Champion Teams. We will have to prioritize, choose strategies and recruit additional volunteers. If you have ever wondered "How can I be more involved in my parish?" the time is now and the place is Journey Forward. Please consider your role in working with Ministry Leaders, parish staff and many of your fellow parishioners to create a future that will be energized by the Holy Spirit and responsive to God's will. Emails indicating interest in volunteering should be sent to: [email protected] - Msgr. Michael D. JOAN OF ARC JUNE 10 Help Thy Brother! Whew! Already there’s talk of a long hot and stormy summer. But, you should have been around a couple of centuries ago. Our Monk outfits were heavy and we had no AC. But we did the best we could with our talents: mending Monastery walls, baking bread and making soup for the poor and hungry, sheltering the homeless. This summer, the St. Joan of Arc faithful can use their talents to help others. For example, volunteer to pick up groceries for the homebound. Help the aged with hurricane preparations. See if a senior neighbor’s AC is Be d working properly. Do some yard e Prepar work for the disabled. Donate a few dollars to our Care Ministry for those who can’t afford water and electric bills. Our talents are gifts from the Lord. Use them in Brotherly and Sisterly Love. And as the kids say, “That would be sooooo Cool.” God Bless! - Brother Steward WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE BY CREDIT CARD? Forms are available at the back of the church or in the Parish Office. You can earn frequent flyer miles on your contributions to St. Joan of Arc. We now accept most mayor credit cards: FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM PLANNED The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has called for a "Fortnight for Freedom" that begins on June 21, the vigil of the Feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, and ends with Independence Day. This two-week period is meant to be a special time of prayer, study and catechesis. The Fortnight for Freedom will be a great hymn of prayer for our country and will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Like dioceses around the country, the Diocese of Palm Beach will have special Masses and events in our parishes to highlight the importance of defending our first freedom. The "Fortnight for Freedom" schedule and information will be distributed to parishes, in The Florida Catholic and on the diocesan website at www.diocesepb.org Information will be added to our "Fortnight for Freedom" page as it becomes available. Listed right now on that page is information on national Masses - one of which will be televised by EWTN. The U.S. Bishops have designated the period from June 21st through July 4th as a Fortnight For Freedom. During this special period of prayer we are asked to reflect upon the religious liberty we enjoy in our nation as well as the current threats to it. We are encouraged to participate in this fortnight: By attending daily Mass, Praying the Rosary, Attending Eucharistic Adoration, Fasting and Penance, Study & meditation, and daily reflections found at www.diocesepb.org and www.usccb.org. THE CHURCH’S ROLE IN POLITICAL LIFE Christians believe that Jesus’ commandment to love one’s neighbor extends beyond individual relationships to all human relations, from the family to the entire community. Jesus brings “good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, new sight to the blind, and to set the downtrodden free” (Luke 4:18). His example and words invite individual acts of charity from each of us. They also encourage understanding and action on a broader scale, one that necessarily involves the institutions and structures of society, the economy and politics. “The Church is duty-bound to offer, through the purification of reason and through ethical formation, her own specific contribution towards understanding the requirements of justice and achieving them politically.” (POPE BENEDICT XVI, DEUS CARITAS EST, 28A) There is often confusion and controversy over the meaning of the separation of church and state and the participation of religious groups in political life. Some seek to exclude religious views from public discourse, even labeling them as a threat to equality and liberty. However, genuine religious expression guarantees authentic freedom, nurturing a mutual respect among the members of our society. It is the responsibility of the state to build a just society for its people. The Church, however, plays a role in the promotion and attainment of justice and protection of the common good. Our Church will celebrate a special Holy Hour for Religious Freedom in Church (Rosary, Readings, Homily, Psalms, Benediction, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament) Tuesday, June 26 7:00pm - 8:00pm All of our parishioners and friends are invited to participate in this Holy Hour. Please mark your calendars The Church engages in politics and public policy issues in a nonpartisan manner. It is true that IRS regulations require this, but more importantly, no party, or for that matter, no legislator, will always fully agree with the Church and the principles it espouses. It is counterproductive for the Church to be or even appear to be partisan given the many issues of life and dignity for which it must advocate. If the Church were aligned to one party, it would be unable to speak to the society as a whole. The Church offers a consistent set of principles, and we must be able to profess them to all. This kind of participation does not involve religious tests for candidates, or telling people for whom they should or should not vote. Rather, the Church joins the public debate to share its experience in serving the powerless and to lift up the moral dimensions of public issues. By advocating its social doctrine through education and rational argument, the Church seeks to properly form the consciences of both those actively involved in political life and the electorate. JOAN OF ARC JUNE 10 preferably in early December before the end of the tax year. Many of our younger families as well as older parishioners have shown interest in the steps to financial planning before committing to a specific vehicle or consultant. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE, PLEASE CONTACT WENDY HORTON AT 561-952-2838 OR [email protected] SAINT OF THE DAY ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA Doctor of the Church (Feastday: June 13, 1195 - 1231) Saint Anthony was canonized (declared a saint) less than one year after his death. There is perhaps no more loved and admired saint in the Catholic Church than Saint Anthony of Padua, a Doctor of the Church. Though his work was in Italy, he was born in Portugal. He first joined the Augustinian Order and then left it and joined the Franciscan Order in 1221, when he was 26 years old. The reason he became a Franciscan was because of the death of the five Franciscan protomartyrs -- St. Bernard, St. Peter, St. Otho, St. Accursius, and St. Adjutus -- who shed their blood for the Catholic Faith in the year 1220, in Morocco, in North Africa, and whose headless and mutilated bodies had been brought to St. Anthony’s monastery on their way back for burial. St. Anthony became a Franciscan in the hope of shedding his own blood and becoming a martyr. He lived only ten years after joining the Franciscan Order. So simple and resounding was his teaching of the Catholic Faith, so that the most unlettered and innocent might understand it, that he was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Saint Anthony was only 36 years old when he died. He is called the “hammer of the Heretics” His great protection against their lies and deceits in the matter of Christian doctrine was to utter, simply and innocently, the Holy Name of Mary. When St. Anthony of Padua found he was preaching the true Gospel of the Catholic Church to heretics who would not listen to him, he then went out and preached it to the fishes. This was not, as liberals and naturalists are trying to say, for the instruction of the fishes, but rather for the glory of God, the delight of the angels, and the easing of his own heart. St. Anthony wanted to profess the Catholic Faith with his mind and his heart, at every moment. He is typically depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus, to whom He miraculously appeared, and is commonly referred to today as the "finder of lost articles." Upon exhumation, some 336 years after his death, his body was found to be corrupted, yet his tongue was totally incorrupt, so perfect were the teachings that had been formed upon it. AIM RETREAT (HANDICAPPED MEET CHRIST) JUNE 10 ST. JOAN OF ARC 7 FATHER’S DAY NOVENA OF MASSES On May 13th, we showed how much we loved and cared for our loving Mothers. This time we have the same opportunity to express our love and appreciation for our Fathers, both living and deceased, for being the head of the family. Looking for a perfect gift to give to your Dad? Why not give him the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? We will be remembering our loving Fathers in our nine day Novena of Masses, starting on FATHER’S DAY, JUNE 17th. What a perfect and blessed gift! Please use the envelopes provided in Church & Parish Office for your remembrance. PRAYER FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before You as Your children and ask that You keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm and safety. Father, we thank You in advance, for You are our only refuge. We ask this through Christ Your Son, who lives, and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles and Star of the Sea, Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us. Amen 8 ST. JOAN OF ARC JUNE 10 Prayer for Religious Liberty O GOD OUR CREATOR, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. DOES SJA HAVE SOCCER “SPIRIT?” ARE YOU KIDDING? WE’RE KICKIN’ IT!! Mens Sana in Corpore Sano -- a Latin phrase which when translated means “a sound mind in a healthy body.” Father Tomasz Bochnak would like to paraphrase that slightly for our purposes here at SJA, encouraging us to think of it as “An active spirit inside an active body.” This is precisely why Father Tomasz started the “Sharks” soccer team here at SJA which will be playing every Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. adjacent to the Sports Arena. Father Tomasz stated “SJA is one of the most active parishes in the Diocese with the number of ministries that exist on a spiritual level. Not only are we a spiritual parish, but we are also highly social. Why not have a way for us to become physically active through a sport (such as soccer) and bring people together at the same time?” Presently, the team is looking for players of ALL AGES. “If you can run and kick a ball on the field -- that is what we are looking for right now. Once we get enough players, then we can start dividing up ages, playing abilities, and positions.” Excited by this new concept, Father Tomasz exclaims, “Try something else, try something new; this way you can never say that you didn’t give it a try.” ST. JOAN C A T H O L I C Our spirituality as a parish will be exhibited through a prayer at the beginning and end of a match. “Even if you are not into playing the actual sport, we will need your support, motivation and CHEERING! We are a community coming out to support one another and this is a good way to do it.” So come on out and support the team Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. next to the Sports Arena. St Joan of Arc might have been a crusader on the battlefield, but we’re the “Kickin’ Crusaders” on the home field! So tell us…. Are you in? OF ARC S C H O O L U.S. DEPT. To support this effort, the USCCB has developed prayers sources in both English and Spanish. These can be found on the diocesan website at www.diocesepb.org. Look on the center of the home page for the “Religious Freedom and Conscience Protection” image. Click on that image for the prayers and the latest information related to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) healthcare mandate that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception. This section also provides other helpful links and provides information that can help you gain a better understanding of this threat to religious freedom. For the latest information, please continue to visit this page plus the “Bishop’s Statements” section at www.diocesepb.org SPECIAL NATIONAL MASSES TO BE HELD FOR “FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM” A Mass to open the Fortnight for Freedom will be offered on Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore, Maryland, celebrated by Archbishop William E. Lori of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Similarly, a Mass to close the Fortnight will be offered on Wednesday, July 4 at 12:10 p.m. at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington and homilist Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Mass will be televised nationwide on the EWTN cable network. Check your local listings and the diocesan website (www.diocesepb.org) for details. VOTE TO PROTECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM The faithful of the Diocese of Palm Beach and Floridians have an opportunity this November to take direct action towards the protection of religious freedom by voting ‘yes’ on both Amendments 6 and 8. Amendment 6 protects taxpayers from funding services against their conscience by prohibiting public funds for 14 ST. JOAN OF ARC JUNE 10 abortion and requires parents to give their consent in order for their child to obtain an abortion. By preserving time-honored public-private partnerships, Amendment 8 eliminates discrimination against churches and religious organizations that provide social services. It provides that neither the government nor any agent of the government may deny to any individual or entity the benefits of any program, funding, or other support on the basis of religious identity and belief. For more information on these amendments, please visit the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops at www.flaccb.org. If you want to sign up for advocacy and action alerts, look at the Take Action section of the site and click on Join The Network and/or Grassroots Action Center. Information can also be found on the diocesan website www.diocesepb.org Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Pope Benedict XVI expressed concern this year that what he termed the “most cherished of American freedoms,” religious liberty, is being weakened in the United States. We can clearly perceive the threat to this most cherished freedom in the mandate of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to facilitate and fund abortion inducing drug, sterilization and contraception in the insurance policies provided through the Catholic Church. This threat is also perceived in other limitations upon Church outreach to families, immigrants, victims of human trafficking, the infirm and the needy because of our unwillingness to provide what is contrary to our moral teaching and conscience. The threat to religious liberty is larger than any single issue. The Holy Father has asked us to counter that which would, is his words, “delegitimize the Church’s participation in public debate about the issues which are determining the future of American society.” The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has invited the Catholic faithful to come together across our nation in a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21st through July 4th. During this two week period of prayer and reflection, we, as faithful citizens of this great nation, seek to honor and defend one of our most cherished freedoms, our religious liberty. I encourage all Catholic to attend daily Mass during the Fortnight for Freedom and to offer their prayers of thanksgiving for our nation and our religious liberty. I also encourage all Catholics to spend time in Eucharistic Adoration as well as to pray the rosary asking our Blessed Mother for her intercession in preserving our religious freedoms. All Catholic should consider offering days of penance during the Fortnight for Freedom on which they abstain from meat or part in another form on penance. Finally, I ask that we study and reflect upon religious freedom and the threats posed to it by reading the USCCB statement, Our First, Most Cherished Liberty, as well as the many other materials available through the special USCCB website, www.fortnight4freedom.org and at our diocesan website, www.diocesepb.org. From the arrival of Catholicism to this brave new world in the late 15th century to the establishment of permanent colony in St. Agustine in 1565, the sacraments, faith and outreach of the Catholic Church have been offered to generations of the faithful. From the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649 to Article VI of the Constitution and First Amendment, our great nation has labored to enshrine basic religious freedoms for those who freely choose to exercise their chosen faith. May we continue to stand united in prayer for our nations and our religious liberty and may God bless our undertaking. Cristo mismo.
