Today’s message may lead us to think that following Christ is very hard and difficult; however,
being disciple of Christ is a daily encounter, a constant preparation focusing on a unique person:
Jesus Christ. As we hear from St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus says:
1.) If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers
and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
2.) Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
3.) Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.
Is Jesus speaking to us today? Do we let God be God in our daily activities? Are we allowing
Him to be the center of our time and decision? Are we able to give one hour to be with Lord? Are
we concentrating on Jesus in time of daily prayers, Sunday Eucharist, private and public prayers?
Dear friends, Jesus invites us to know today, right now and on, any other thing we plan to do
should be a secondary choice. Therefore, Jesus must be our first priority, any time and at all time.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE
UNDERSTANDING SHARING AND DEFENDING
OUR FAITH IN TODAY'S WORLD
I often hear from parishioners that they do not feel confident in explaining or defending
their faith when asked or challenged to do so? I don't find this really surprising because the
"American thing" is not to discuss two topics: politics and religion. Both are presented in
our culture as too personal or controversial. That this is true is also very sad because at the
very heart of Christianity is the call to "spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Good News,
wherever and whenever we can. Christianity is not a light to be put under a bushel basket
but a light to be put on a lamp stand so that, all may be illuminated by its light. From the
very beginning of Christianity, apostles and missionaries were sent out to share the truth
and salvation of following Jesus' Way. Unfortunately over the year’s force, coercion and
persecution were at times also used to try to accomplish good ends through evil means. In the end, that approach always fails. Sharing our faith is not
to be accomplished through fighting or violence. Jesus' Way is one of humility, good example, peace and gentleness that respects freedom and the
conscience of others.
With that being said, it does happen sometimes that we are in situations with friends, family members, co-workers or neighbors where the topic of
our faith comes up. What do we do when given the opportunity to discuss and share our beliefs? I would suggest a few points for your consideration:
1. Faith is not genuinely shared if the purpose is to put down or defeat the other person in some way. Respect and courtesy are critical for
real dialogue to happen.
2. Listening to the other person and responding to the questions asked without sarcasm or anger will help real communication to occur.
3. I also have found it very helpful not to slip into using "ad hominem" attacks but to stick to the topic being discussed.
4. Genuine searching for the truth or sharing of the truth of our faith needs to be accompanied by charity and humility, as is the way of the Holy Spirit.
5. A personal invitation to a prayer or worship opportunity is also a good idea because "Wherever two or more are gathered together in my name,
I am there among them." This worship or prayer experience can then become a perfect starting place for dialogue.
6. It is a good idea to have a reference handy when engaging in inter-faith dialogue because you might need to check out some facts.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church or a book like Matthew Kelley's Rediscover Catholicism, are good reference works.
7. Finally, we have many opportunities for studying our faith right here at Saint Joan of Arc: Bible study, RCIA, Diocesan School of Religion
adult education classes, men’s and women’s spiritual groups, and many opportunities for putting our faith into action with volunteer ministries.
All of these exist so we might deepen our faith and be able to share it with others.
May this fall be a fruitful time for prayer, learning and faith sharing. May God continue to bless our parish with the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit
and with a true mission of evangelization and service to neighbor.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you
did for me” (Mt. 25:40). As men and women of faith we take the Gospel challenge
of our Savior Jesus Christ to heart as we endeavor to keep the faith. Modern culture
and our gadget dependent society have created an age of convenience, but an age
that often forgets those with no voice because their existence is not convenient to
us. Next weekend on September 10 and 11 the Diocese of Palm Beach will have a
special collection to benefit the Respect Life Ministry and Migrant Ministry.
Tens of thousands of our brothers and sisters of all faiths, races, ethnicities, and
cultures are still confronting adversity and persecution all around the world. Closer to
home, our faith faces the challenges of a society that has an increasing disrespect for
the dignity of human life and the human person. These voices often cry out with a
silent scream because it is far more convenient for us to ignore them than to live the
Gospel message.
The Gospel is challenging because many times it is not convenient, not popular,
and not easy to live. To respect the dignity of all life, especially the unborn, is our
Christian mission and one that we should proclaim proudly. Additionally, Saint Paul
reminds us that our true citizenship is in heaven and that we are all sojourners here
on the earth, thus we extend our love and kindness to all migrants, because we too
were once strangers in a foreign land (Ex. 22:21).
Your support of these, this special collection enables the Diocese of Palm Beach to
enact programs and services that promote and respect the lives of all of God’s sons
and daughters.

FROM THE SJA LITURGICAL MUSIC MINISTRY DIRECTOR
“SINGING AND THE CONGREGATION”
John Flaherty is the Associate Director of Campus Ministry and Director of
Liturgy and Music at Loyola Marymount University. This year the National
Pastoral Musicians Convention hosted a Panel Discussion which it called “One
Song, Many Voices/Many Songs, One Voice: Making it Work.” John was
one of the three panelists for this discussion and for this article I chose to
focus on him and his observations and ideas for improvement to some core
challenges of musical and liturgical ministry.
John thinks that everything we do sends a message to our congregation.
Everything! He thinks for the most part, we are not even aware of the
messages we are sending. Now, I have always thought that prayer was and
is a very appropriate way to begin most if not all of our activities whether they
be sacred, secular, or a combination of both. Asking God for guidance never
hurt anybody. That being said, let me give you two examples of messages
sent by our actions whether intentional or not in John’s opinion:
• When we gather as a choir and pray before celebrating mass we
send a message of exclusivity. A message that we are separate
from the rest of the church.
• When we take that time and leave our little comfort zones to mingle with the congregation, we send an inclusive message. We are all one and welcome
each other in that spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood.
I mention these things because I, under no circumstances, want to do anything to exclude you in any way. I also want to assure you that we are here and we are
willing to listen should you have any concerns about exclusion from singing during the mass. In fact, the door for you to join us is open wide. Please enter and be a
part of what is being offered up in a joyful noise of musical praise to the Lord, our God.
Non-verbal communication is a very real “thing”, but if I love you I would rather tell you or sing it to you rather than have you draw your own conclusions from what
you may or may not see me do whether intentional or accidental.
Now, recently upon our immediate return from NPM we have been rather insistent that you take more of an active role in the mass by singing
with us at every opportunity to do so. One of those opportunities is the responsorial psalm. This is John’s opinion on the subject:
“The responsorial psalm occupies a unique place within the proclamation of the word of God. It is:
• The community’s response to the first reading.
• A dialogue that occurs on two specific levels-the first being the community’s vertical dialogue (with God) and second,
a horizontal dialogue (the body of Christ) of the psalmist and the community gathered.”
So, if we view the responsorial psalm as a conversation, your role is clear. Once the refrain is intoned it becomes yours. It is not the choir’s or the cantor’s responsibility
to ask a question (so to speak) and then answer that same question. The tools are in-place for you to take that more active role in the mass. You need only pick them up
and confidently raise your voices in dutiful and joyful praise. Keep in mind that THE WORDS TO ALL HYMNS ARE SHOWN ON THE SCREENS! HAPPY SINGING!

The Candidate Questionnaire Project (CQP) produced by the Florida
bishops for the August 30th Primary is now out. The CQP is a document
that provides a summary of how the candidates running for office stand
on several issues of importance to our faith community. The CQPs can
be found on the Florida bishops’ website at www.flaccb.org and on the
diocese’s website. The information is updated regularly as candidates
return their responses. Our faith community is encouraged to view and
utilize the CQP materials before casting your vote whether you do so in
person at a polling place or by mail.

An 8 week structured grief support program designed to
guide people during their process of mourning the loss of

On November 2, the commemoration of all the faithful
departed, “All Soul’s Day.” There will be a beautiful Mass

A spiritual weekend program for widowed men and
women to help them resolve the normal grief they feel
and begin to live again. Participants gather to view videos,
reflect, share, and support one another in the healing process.

The class lasts one hour
SoulCore is a new movement that consists of core strengthening and
isometric exercises. It is a sensory experience that combines candlelight,
music, reflections and movement to nourish body, mind and soul and
encourages deeper meditation on the mysteries and virtues of the Rosary.
Participants are able to strengthen both their bodies and their interior prayer life.
All of the movement can be modified so all are welcome to participate,

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement
funds, bank accounts and real property.

1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds.
This donation would be used where it is most needed.
2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used.

called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will.
Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add
St. Joan of Arc.

Special Dates for Grandparents
This year on September 11 many across the country will celebrate National
Grandparents Day. Please take time to pray for and to honor grandparents who
pass on the faith to future generations. We encourage grandparents to mark their

Beach’s Annual Grandparents Pilgrimage & Mass which will be held on Saturday

Palm Beach Gardens. Bishop Barbarito will be the celebrant, a performance by a
children’s choir and reception. New this year: the diocese has chartered two buses
to bring grandparents from the north and the south ends of the diocese to the
Cathedral to join in this celebration. Cost for this bus transportation is $10 per person

San Lucas 14, 25-33: Examinar la conciencia
En el Evangelio de la Misa nos habla el Señor de las exigencias que
lleva consigo el seguirle, el atender a la llamada que dirige a todos.
Y nos hace esta advertencia: ¿Quién de vosotros, si quiere construir
una torre, no se sienta primero a calcular los gastos, a ver si tiene para
terminarla? No sea que, si echa los cimientos y no puede acabarla, se
pongan a burlarse de él... ¿O qué rey, si va a dar la batalla a otro rey,
no se sienta primero a deliberar si con diez mil hombres podrá salir al
paso del que le ataca con veinte mil?. Cuando se emprende un gran
asunto es preciso valorar, calibrar las posibilidades, echar mano de
los recursos oportunos para llevarlo a buen fin. Ser discípulo de Cristo,
procurar seguirle fielmente en medio de nuestras ocupaciones, es la
empresa suprema que ha de acometer todo hombre. Y para llevarla a
buen término es necesario conocer bien los medios que poseemos y
saber utilizarlos, ser conscientes de aquello que nos falta para pedirlo
confiadamente al Señor, arrancar y tirar lo que estorba. Y esta es la
misión del examen de conciencia. Si lo hacemos bien, con hondura, nos
lleva a conocer la verdad de nuestra vida.
