Older Americans Month
Every U.S. president since John F. Kennedy has issued a
formal presidential proclamation either before or during the
month of May, asking the nation to celebrate Older Americans
Month by finding some way to honor the older Americans in
their communities.
Every year, the U.S.
Administration on Aging creates a new theme

When Age is Affecting Your Ability to Drive
Fatal crash rates rise sharply after a driver reaches age
70. Understanding how aging is affecting your driving
can help you make adjustments that allow you to continue to drive more safely, longer. Keep an eye out for
these warning signs:
Conflicting medications: Certain medications or combination of drugs can affect your reflexes and ability to
drive. Be especially careful if you take several medications a day, or notice a difference after starting a new
medication.
Eyesight: Some eye conditions can affect your peripheral
vision, cause trouble seeing and driving at night, and
blurred vision. Can you see lights and stop signs? How
quickly can you react to drivers coming from behind or
from the side?
Hearing: You may not realize you’re missing important
signals to drive safely if your hearing is declining. Can
you hear emergency sirens or if someone is accelerating
next to you?
Reflexes and range of motion: How quickly can you react
if you need to brake suddenly? Have you ever confused
the brake with the gas pedal? Do you get angry or flustered while driving? Do you have any pain or stiffness
that makes it difficult to look over your shoulder?
Memory: Do you have problems missing exits or getting
lost? If there’s a pattern that’s increasing, its time to get
evaluated by a doctor.
Close calls: Are you having problems with fender benders, dents and scrapes from garage doors, curbs, tickets
or warnings by law enforcement officers?
Understand your limitations. Brush up on your driving by
taking a safety course offered in many communities.
Talk to your doctor and get an opinion about your ability
to drive safely. A certified driver rehabilitation specialist
can provide an evaluation of skills needed to drive and
recommend car modifications or tools to keep you driving as long as possible.

Teresa Vitores is from Guayaquil, Equador.
She lived in the Bronx, New York for 14 years and then moved to
south Florida. As an Interior Decorator, Mrs. Vitores specialized in
upholstery. She redesigned furniture that became worn and out of
date. She is 69 years young and married to Luis Vitores.
Together they have two children and three granddaughters; 11 and
twins that are 5 years old. She dedicates her spare time to spending
quality time with the girls.
Teresa has been volunteering at Mid County Senior Center for 7
years. She started out as a translator helping Spanish speakers with
completing documents and facilitating new members. Now she
enjoys volunteering in the nutrition program where she assists with
organizing and setting up the dining room, serving meals and helping the new members complete their intake forms. It’s not just work
for Teresa, she enjoys hosting Bingo games on Thursdays at 10:30a.m,
plays dominoes and participates in the Salsa/Bachata dance
classes.
Thank you Teresa Vitores for your years of service and valuable
contribution to our Mid-County seniors!

A diferencia

A seguir bachateando, amigos!

My name is Rosa Triviħo and I'm from Colombia. During my years I have dedicated
myself to learn and teach crafts because that has been my passion and with which I
identify. I love working with recycled products because while we are saving the planet,
we can do useful things with them for our homes. It also helps us to keep our minds
occupied and thus avoid many diseases. I started volunteering at the Mid County
Senior Center in July 2008. I think my dedication to this center has brought me great
satisfaction for me as for the people I teach. Here we work with plastics, newspapers

For that and many other reasons, I invite you to participate in my craft classes.
