WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN Online Edition Please call to obtain a full printed copy. Volume 97, Number 5 • May 1, 2010 Rediscovering Ourselves in Jerusalem “I f I forget thee, O Jerusalem…” says the Psalm. Deep emotional ties to Israel result from individual experiences. Each of us is challenged to discover our own unique relationship with Jerusalem, indeed with the entirety of the State of Israel. For me, Jerusalem was the place where I studied to become a rabbi, the city in which I was married, the place I return to annually to meet family and introduce our Brawerman students. I’m always gratified to observe their discoveries and special connections. This year, I watched our Head of School, Nadine Breuer, return to Israel after thirty years. For her, it was as if it was the first visit: She thrilled at every historic site, especially sharing our kids’ first view of the golden city, sharing Shabbat, climbing Masada. She says: “I have never felt a greater sense of ‘ourness’ than on this visit to this wonderful country. As much as we read and learn about Israel, In This Issue the reality is so much greater. How wonderful that we share it with our students.” And Steve Breuer says: “Each visit demands a new consideration of a personal relationship to the land and the mystical city. Watching Nadine, four educators and twenty-two twelve-year-olds begin their discovery of their special individual relationships has been a privilege and, in addition to a long visit at Yad Vashem, has once again reconfirmed my own long-held, deeply felt emotions.” As we leave Jerusalem, each of us is changed. We are reconfirmed in our feelings. As we return to our homes, we are renewed. Full of memories, we proclaim, “We will never forget you O Jerusalem, we will forever cherish our homeland.” Rabbi Elissa Ben-Naim second campus Gesher Classes Help Children Grow! Elegant Gala Torah Portion The Book of Numbers “J ew—not a Jew?” It’s a game many of us play. We read about a wealthy person. We meet someone at a party or on an airplane. We look, we toss out a Yiddish word or two and wonder: “Jew—not a Jew?” It used to be easier to play, but somehow in the pursuit of the American dream, with shortened noses and shortened names, with Christmas trees, secularism, humanism, pragmatism, atheism and less anti-Semitism, the game has gotten tougher. Just ask yourself a few questions: If a stranger walked into your home, would she know it’s a Jewish home? If the answer is no, you’ve concealed your identity where it matters most. Do your children or grandchildren have Hebrew names? Do you know your child’s soccer coach better than his religious schoolteacher? Have you been to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Australia or on safari, but not to Israel? Check out the D’var Torah on our website: www.wbtla.org/news/item/109/news This month, we begin a new book of the Torah called Numbers in English because so much of it concerns who and what counts. In fact, the first order of business in this new book is a census. The ancient Israelites are told “S’u et rosh—Lift up your heads,” and be counted as Jews. Each tribe, each clan, each family, each person mattered. We’ve shed a lot of our Jewish skin trying to blend into the American landscape. But some of us have blended in so well we’ve disappeared. Of course we want to belong, to fit in. We don’t want to dress in black coats and hats, wigs and skirts to the knee. But modern, progressive Jews can find middle ground between Chasidism and secularism. It begins by accepting the challenge to lift up our heads and be counted— to make a difference in our people’s story—so that “Jew—not a Jew?” is a question never asked about us. Rabbi Steven Z. Leder Plugged In YOUNG PEOPLE UNITE! ON FACEBOOK OF COURSE... H opefully you’re a fan of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple fan page on Facebook. Tikkun Olam From Generation to Generation To protect our eternal flame, we must protect our children. And it’s up to each of us to do our part. T here is a story in our tradition that teaches when the people of Israel stood at Sinai to receive the Torah, God said, “Present to Me good guarantors that you will guard My Torah, and I shall give it to you.” They replied, “Our ancestors are our guarantors.” God answered, “Your ancestors are not sufficient guarantors. Bring Me better guarantors, and I shall give you the Torah.” So they said, “God, our prophets are our guarantors.” God said to them, “The prophets are not sufficient guarantors. Bring Me yet better guarantors and I shall give you the Torah.” The people answered once again, “Our children will be our guarantors.” God finally said, “They are certainly good guarantors. For their sake, I give the Torah to you.” From generation to genera- tion, our children are the keepers of our tradition, the keepers of our eternal flame. On April 22, Wilshire Boulevard Temple members and their friends, all in their 20s and 30s, gathered at Bar Noir in Beverly Hills for an evening of good conversation with good people, all for a good cause. The Temple’s young adults group, the blvd, recently partnered with the Concern Foundation’s young adults division, Concern II, to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research. What it comes down to is this: To protect our eternal flame, we must protect our children. And it’s up to each of us to do our part. Rabbi David Eshel For more information about the blvd, visit www.wbtla.org/pages/theblvd Adult Opportunities Recommiting Is Transformation T he phrase “for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” is repeated thirty-six times in the Torah. Why thirty-six? When we remember we were strangers in Egypt, we will be granted a double portion of life—for eighteen represents life. In Hebrew, the word for stranger is ger, which is also the word for a convert, one who chooses Judaism freely. Rabbi Yitzhak Hutner (Pachad Yitzchak) writes: The Exodus was an act of conversion, as all the laws of conversion are derived from it. According to the Talmud, our ancestors initiated the process of conversion just before leaving Egypt. They marched through the Red Sea, experiencing God’s wonder. They wandered in the desert, guided by an outstretched mighty hand. They stood at Mt. Sinai with open arms, amid thunder and lightning, and received the Torah. These transformative moments—immersion in the sea, wandering with guidance, the gift of Torah—allowed them to enter a unique relationship: the covenant with God. Today, affirming Judaism is still a journey, for Rabbi Hutner’s view emphasizes that we all must freely choose to claim our Jewish heritage. We can do so with a beginner’s mind, with the openness of one choosing Judaism again and again, as we move from our early spring liberation at Pesach to receiving Torah at Shavuot in early summer. Our adult b’nei mitzvah students will reaffirm their commitments to our traditions and fortify their faith on Shavuot Tuesday evening, May 18, in the Magnin Sanctuary at the Temple Campus. Nine adults will chant and teach Torah, opening their hearts to claim our tradition for themselves. Join Lauren Becker, Betty Cohen, Margeret (Peggy) Davis, Stephen Davis, Alejandro Lara, Jilla Meshkanian, Randi Sapin, Hedy Van Der Fluit and Judi Walley as they become b’nei mitzvah and transform their souls. Witness the ultimate springtime tale of rejuvenation and revelation. Rabbi Karen L. Fox 3 Brawerman Elementary School same name same values second campus Brawerman East Elementary School of Wilshire Boulevard Temple W e’re proud to announce that we are growing! In September 2011, Brawerman Elementary School will open its East Campus at the historic Temple site. As the proverb says, “Nothing succeeds like success,” and the newest charter kindergarten class will continue the tradition. The first Brawerman charter kindergarten class, comprised of ten children, was established in 1999 with a mission to provide the highest academic standards in a nurturing setting where students learn Jewish values. Guided by the visionary leadership of Head of School Nadine Breuer, Brawerman West has now grown to 275 students in grades kindergarten through six. The fifth class of sixth graders will graduate this June. A Brawerman graduate is academically competent, an effective communicator, a creative problem solver and a mensch. We’re proud of the achievements of our students and look forward to the same success for the future graduates of both campuses. In 2011, we will fill our newly renovated classrooms, located in an inspirational, historical setting. This second campus will provide the same environment, educational excellence, enriching curriculum and highly qualified educators that families have come to appreciate over the past decade. We welcome Brawerman East students and their families as we grow together and share in the promise of the decades to come. For more information about Brawerman Elementary School, visit www.brawerman.org Religious School: “Center for Learning & Engagement” Without Bread, There is No Torah E ach Sunday morning as I walk into the Temple, I am amazed at how the Bagel Café is a symbol of the community we create each week. It provides a space for everyone in our Temple to spend time with each other at the start of our day. When the Bagel Café is closed (as it was a couple of weeks ago in honor of our Pesach seder), it is missed. Some people miss the bagels, cookies or hot chocolate. I miss the feeling the Bagel Café creates each morning. As people walk into the Temple, they are greeted with warmth, kindness, a smile and usually someone open to conversation. A parent and a few students volunteer their time. Parents gather as they purchase a bagel and cream cheese or coffee. Students stop and grab a snack on the way to class. Teachers congregate here before heading to their classrooms. In Pirkei Avot (the Ethics of Our Fathers), we are taught Im ein kemach, ein Torah: Without bread, there is no Torah. The communal sustenance that our café brings is essential to our learning each Sunday. The Bagel Café is our bread; our learning is the Torah. Rabbinic Intern Erin Mason 4 our THANK YOU toSponsors! W ilshire Boulevard Temple currently offers a Gesher class, or transitional kindergarten program, at the Mann Family Early Childhood Center. Now, we are thrilled to offer the Gesher class at Erika J. Glazer Early Childhood Center as well, beginning in September 2010. Our transitional kindergarten class teaches phonics, phonemes and early math concepts including adding, subtracting and geometric shapes, all through the hands-on learning that is one of the pedagogical hallmarks of our programs. Many of the children are ready to read or are already reading when they move on to kindergarten. This program is geared for our oldest children, as well as those who have already completed a year of pre-kindergarten (seniors), such as the Adom class at the Temple or the Alonim or Harim classes at the Irmas Campus, and would benefit from another year of growth and development before starting kindergarten. There is also a great emphasis on art with our Ateliers and Atelieristas at both campuses. This program is just one more way we maintain our philosophy of challenging each child to reach his or her greatest potential! Camps A New Menorah for Gindling Hilltop Camp W hen Wilshire Boulevard Temple first began a camping program, it was held on a rental site that was a Presbyterian campground with many crosses on the property. Thus, when we first bought our own property, it became very important for our camp community to put up menorot. The menorah has such significance to our camps that the official logo of the camps is a menorah overlooking the Pacific. When I arrived at Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps almost six years ago, there wasn’t a menorah to be found at Gindling Hilltop Camp. I didn’t realize this until a few summers later, when the Counselors-in-Training decided it was important to honor the history of our camps and place a menorah at Hilltop. This small group of CITs was part of a unique CIT program that year. They spent half the summer at Camp Hess Kramer and half at Gindling Hilltop Camp. It was their hope that by placing a menorah at Hilltop, the two camps would feel more like one community. Unfortunately, the wooden menorah that they built and placed just outside the chapel at Hilltop couldn’t withstand the winds of up to 70 miles per hour that are typical during the winter, and over the next two summers the menorah fell. This winter, a new menorah was created and installed. With the completion of the steel menorah at Hilltop, we will continue to integrate our two unique camps into one community.
