THE JANUARY 2012 Temple Chronicle C O N G R E G AT I O N PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JACK GRUNDFEST Happy New Year to all of you! I hope that you all had a very happy Chanukah and are as excited as I am about the opportunities that lie ahead during this new secular year! December was another hopping month here at Temple. Rabbi Danziger and Jeanne were here with us the weekend of December 9th. After services on the 9th, we had a dinner welcoming the Danzigers to our Congregation. We enjoyed a wonderful meal prepared by Rita Fagan and Jo Lawton with spectacular desserts including fresh chocolate dipped macaroons. It was a fun evening for all who attended. Thanks so much to Rita and Jo for your willingness to cook for us! That Sunday, December 11th, Rabbi Danziger participated in Religious School and taught his first Confirmation Class. As you might recall, Rabbi Danziger will be meeting with the class once each month culminating with the Confirmation Ceremony on May 18th, 2012. Also on December 11th, we had our first all Temple Artist art show organized by Bonnie Jacobson. It was well attended by both artists and patrons. We are so thankful to Bonnie for all the work she is doing with the Judaica Shop at Temple. If you have not dropped by to see the results of Bonnie’s efforts, I strongly encourage you to drop in and make a purchase! Then on December 12th, Emily Lewis and I were guests at Coffee, Cake and Conversation led by Leah Elenzweig at Woodland Heights. What a wonderful group this is! Leah does an excellent job leading and facilitating this program, and I thoroughly enjoyed being a guest speaker. Our Congregational Chanukah party, "Stop, Drop and Spin," was held at Temple the evening of December 20th. We are so fortunate that Naomi and Chris Stratton jumped in to chair continued on page 3... D'var Torah - THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE / JANUARY 2012 PAGE 2 Andy Lawton MIKETZ Genesis 41:44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, yet without you, no one shall lift up hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” by seven years of great famine. Joseph then coordinated the storage of excess grain in the good years to allow sufficient provisions to feed all in need when times were bad. The great author, Jules Feiffer, penned the play “Little Murders.” In a highly entertaining way, he demonstrated how human beings, through their authority over others, can commit both great and small acts of maliciousness. By repeatedly demeaning someone, we cause his or her spiritual death. The flip side is the abuse of power. The potential for use of position to harm others becomes readily apparent in Joseph’s relationship with his father and brothers. He torments them at every conceivable opportunity. He hides his identity to make sure that his brothers will see only that he is second in command in Egypt. Next, he has his staff put money in the packs of his brothers to make it look like they had stolen money from him. He then holds Simeon hostage while sending the others to bring Jacob’s youngest son, Benjamin, to Egypt. Benjamin eventually becomes leverage to force Jacob to come to Egypt as well when Joseph has one of his household cups planted as false evidence of thievery in the boy’s pack. It is not until the subsequent Torah portion, Vayigash, that Joseph abandons the charade and reveals his true identity as well as his wish for reconciliation. Not a very saintly sequence of actions at all. Power arises from a wide variety of sources. For example, intelligence and knowledge may yield power. Albert Einstein was sorely lacking in social graces, but he exerted a tremendous amount of influence based upon his skills. Police have authority granted by the government that gives them the privilege of enforcing the law. Coming from the right family can lead to opportunities not available to others. Great wealth can put one in a Donald Trump role. Power may come from God as Moses certainly demonstrated. Even being crazy may be played for strength; the invasion of Iraq was delayed because the Unites States government believed Sadam had lethal chemical weapons and would not hesitate to use them if he felt threatened. I could go on, but you get the basic idea. Power has two faces. Having authority can allow an individual to perform great acts for the public good. Miketz demonstrates how Joseph’s wisdom and divine support saved Egypt and the Middle East from starvation. He foresaw from Pharaoh’s dreams that seven years of plentiful crops would be followed Needless to say, none of us, no matter how lowly, is truly completely powerless. Yes, we may believe in our own benignity, but we are all reminded at Yom Kippur that none of us has escaped the temptation to satisfy our needs through the belittlement and exploitation of those vulnerable to our sphere of influence. The mitzvot expounded in the Torah and the commentary thereon provides a framework for avoiding these pitfalls. As Jews, we are commanded to examine the motives for our actions and correct our ways accordingly. Only through awareness may we avoid committing the “little murders.” TRANSITION TRANSMISSION One assignment that the Transition Committee faced was ensuring that when Rabbi Danziger is not scheduled to be in town, Shabbat services continue to be occasions for prayer and inspiration. For both the evening and morning services, experienced lay leaders have stepped in. The wonderful musicians led by David Bauman agreed to try to hold the popular All Music Shabbat once a month. Andy Lawton agreed to be the lay leader for Shabbat evening services—a role he had extensive experience with under Rabbi Levy. Each of Andy’s services includes a brief homily tied to the Torah portion. The Shabbat morning minyan continues the pattern that Rabbi Levy began, a pattern that includes spirited singing and chanting of prayers and the full involvement of the group in a discussion of the Torah passage. Many congregants have served as lay leaders in the past when Rabbi Levy was out of town; with Rabbi Levy’s encouragement, they took the Torah scroll out, read or chanted from it, and led lively discussions. The transition period has revealed two areas that the minyan is addressing: first, reading from Torah takes a significant amount of preparation, making it difficult for any one congregant to commit to being the sole Torah reader; two, the chanting and singing succeed best with a song leader. Some congregants in the minyan have agreed to read some verses from the Torah scroll on some occasions, but a regular pattern is still evolving. For the musical aspect, the minyan was delighted when Russ Parish volunteered to lead the singing and chanting for most services. Congregants are welcome to share with the committee their suggestions for ways that the Shabbat service experience can be improved during the transition. There is one element that always contributes to the success of a Shabbat service, though: your presence. We hope to see you at our next lay-led Shabbat experience! Emily and Rich Lewis Transition Committee Co-Chairs President's Message Continued... this event, and that they were assisted by many other young parents and volunteers. It is so nice to see a new group of young people getting involved. This type of energy, involvement and commitment by our congregants, particularly our newer and younger congregants, is what has enabled our Congregation to survive and prosper for almost 150 years. On December 21st, our Seniors Lunch and Learn returned with a Chanukah program here at Temple. On December 28th, the Social Action Committee, led by Becky Marks, again cooked dinner for the folks at Our House. Becky Marks does such a wonderful job leading the work of this committee out in the greater community, including the Thanksgiving basket project, providing meals at Harmony Clinic, cooking and serving for the folks at Our House, organizing the Back to School backpack program and much, much more. We are so thankful for Becky and her committee, and are proud to announce that she has been selected as our Congregation’s Tikkun Olam Award recipient for this year. Becky will be recognized at the Jewish Federation of Arkansas' 100th Anniversary Gala on February 4, 2012. The Rabbi Search Committee has been formed and will be chaired by Janet Korenblat. The committee is already working hard to complete the application for an interim rabbi for Board approval this month. Once this application is complete, it will be provided to the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) Placement Office to be placed on its website to be viewed by potential candidates. The Search Committee will then begin receiving resumes from interested candidates for the interim rabbi position and will begin the selection process. We will keep you updated on this process and will be as transparent as possible as it evolves. Once the interim rabbi application has been provided to the CCAR, the Search Committee will begin work on the application for a Rabbi Search Committee Janet Korenblat, Chair Carmen Arick Jerry Jacobson Eugene Krupitsky Stacey Ronnel Amanda Ferguson Scot Goldsholl David Bauman Andy Lawton Leah Elenzweig Russ Parish Mac Lyons Jack Grundfest, President If you have any questions at all about the search process, please ask a committee member. THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE / JANUARY 2012 PAGE 3 permanent rabbi. The members of the Search Committee are listed elsewhere in this edition of the Chronicle. I am also proud to announce that on January 15, the Temple B'nai Israel Religious School will be having a Religious School Mitzvah Day chaired by Laura Joseph, Amanda Williams and Jan Osmundson. The students and teachers have chosen to focus attention on families and friends who are currently serving in the military. The students will organize and assemble “goody boxes” of things unavailable to those deployed in faraway places. We would love for the entire congregation to join us on January 15th at the Temple. The All-Congregation Mitzvah Day, scheduled for January 15, 2012, has been postponed until April 22, 2012. The date was changed because several of the agencies with whom we want to work expressed their preference that we come during the spring to help them with outdoor projects. However, the prep day scheduled for January 8th remains on the calendar providing the opportunity to learn about and discuss the Jewish mandate to care for others in the Jewish and general community. Our own members will speak about their fulfilling experiences. Ellyn will facilitate discussion based on Jewish text. We hope that you will make plans to join us on January 8th. Please look elsewhere in this edition of the Chronicle for information about all the events planned for the month of January particularly the Mitzvah Day Prep Day and the Religious School Mitzvah Day. As always, if you have any questions at all about the rabbinic hiring process or anything else going on at Temple, or if you are interested in volunteering or being more involved during this transition period, please let me know. I am looking forward to seeing you at Temple! Altar Flowers January 6, 2012 In memory of Arnold L. LEVY, Rabbi SHERI SIMON, Educator/Administrator DAVID BAUMAN, President KENNON GOLDSHOLL, Executive V.P. JACK GRUNDFEST, Admn. V.P. MAC LYONS, Treasurer JO LAWTON, Secretary Jeremy Cohen Jeremy Cohen will be our Scholar in Residence February 19 – 20. Dr. Cohen will present three lectures at Temple B’nai Israel. The first will be on his book “The Myth of the Jews as Christ Killer”. The following article is from the book jacket. If you would like to read the book prior to Dr. Cohen’s visit, you may borrow it from the Temple office. Cohen combines religious, historical, and political perspectives to understand how the Christ-killer myth has become a dominant factor in the way Christians and Jews perceive each other. While a great deal has been written about Christian anti-Semitism, its roots, and its horrific consequences, this is the first volume to provide an in-depth examination of the powerful story that has fueled the fires behind the hatred. V.P. Christians believe that Christ's death redeems and forgives. Yet the same blood shed on the cross has been used to stain Jews with lasting, incomparable guilt. The gospel narratives of the Passion cast the Jews as responsible, directly and indirectly, for the death of the Son of God. The stigma of "Christ killer" -the notion that all Jews, at all times and in all places, share in collective responsibility for the Crucifixtion-has plagued Jews ever since and is the source of much Christian anti-Semitism. Congregation THE TEMPLE CHRONI B’nai Israel Jeremy Cohen traces the Christ-killer myth from ancient times to the present day, touching on the Gospels and their roots in Hebrew Scripture, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, and much in between. The greatest of the church fathers, the Crusades, the notorious blood libels of the Middle Ages, the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, Christian mysticism, art, and popular piety, Passion plays, and modern film all have a place in this well-documented, richly illustrated volume. Sisterhood Judaica Shop thanks the nine talented artists who participated in the December 11th Temple Artists’ Show & Sale, and the Jewish community for supporting them and Sisterhood with their purchases. A special thanks to Chuck Kokes for donating all his proceeds to the Sisterhood. P.S. The Synagogue Sisterhood often does a “give-away” at their meetings. Those who care to can put a dollar or two into a bowl, and write something nice like wishing everyone a good year, or thank you to someone or congrats to someone. We read the nice things aloud, and blindly pick one name to get the prize. The donation helps cover the costs of the snacks, etc. Joining in will be totally voluntary. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS “We Care” is the title of the Religious School Mitzvah Day Project, taking place on January 15, 2012. The students and teachers will be packaging up donated goodies to send to the servicemen/women stationed in faraway places to show them that “we care”. Jan Osmundson, Laura Joseph and Amanda Williams are heading up the committee to bring this important need to the attention of our students and adult communities so they can perform this anonymous act of loving kindness “gimilut chasadim” on the MLK weekend of service. We know that receiving our packages, cards and letters can make a big difference in the lives of these soldiers. If you wish to participate in this mitzvah, please drop your donations of snack foods, personal care items, correspondence materials and warm socks into the collection boxes found in the temple foyer. Temple members who are currently serving in the military will speak with the students about their duties and deployments. We invite members of the Jewish War Veterans to visit the school on January 15 to share their stories. Please call Ellyn for more information. ATI’DAY PRESCHOOL NEWS Kroger Cards Help support Ati’Day by using a prepaid Kroger card when you buy groceries. It’s simple to use and 5% of all purchases made will go to our school after an initial $5,000 cumulative amount is reached. The cards already come with $5 as an incentive to get you started and we are asking for a $5 donation when you sign up as a courtesy to reimburse us for the initial cost. Here’s how it works: First you load or reload the card at the checkout register prior to purchasing your groceries and the school earns extra money! It is important that you get your card as soon as possible so that the school and students can benefit. You can also get a card for other family members and friends! This is a great opportunity to help make money for the school while getting everyday necessities from the supermarket! Request your card by calling Lauren at (501)221-1614! TODA RABA Many thanks to our office volunteers: Kathy Bauman, Sherry Weinberg, Dale Ronnel, Aniko Diamant, Rita Fagan, and Kathy Grundfest. Thank You, Rita and Jo and Friends, for the Nourishing Noshes and Festive Feasts! Many, many thanks are owed to Rita Fagan and Jo Lawton— and all of their friends—for the food they prepare so well for all of us each and every time. The month of December was an especially busy month for our indefatigable chefs with four cooking marathons: Shabbat Dinner to welcome the Danzigers on December 9, Chanukah Foods from Around the World on December 11, the First Night of Chanukah Family Dinner on December 20, and the Chanukah Seniors Luncheon on December 21. Each event required hours of preparation in addition to the work on the day itself. As all of the people who pitched in to help will attest: Rita and Jo are a truly amazing duo!
