Momentum on the Map 2013 Annual report The map shows actions, advocacy, seminars or holiday observances involving JCUA in 2013. ► Interactive version of the map, with photos and explanations: jcua.org/momentum ► 2013 Annual Report online: jcua.org/annual Welcome The Creation of a Moral Society Families in Chicago are being torn apart. “JCUA’s most important work is to respond to the anguish of those who suffer from neglect and oppression, to help people help themselves, to listen to the moral outrage of the prophets.” Another year of mass immigrant deportations. Another month trying to find safe and affordable housing. Another day of gunshots and funerals. Peggy Slater JCUA Board President What kind of society allows its families to be subjected to these horrors? The creation of a moral society is who we are. It is our mission. It is the foundation of our work. In the JCUA family, our founder and mentor, Rabbi Robert J. Marx, speaks often about our mandate to help create a moral society. He puts it this way: Protecting the family — beset by deportations, gun violence and housing challenges — was a connecting theme for JCUA in 2013. It is a theme that will continue. Our task now is to bring others to join us. We need hands, and minds. We need people like you to help us with this work. This Annual Report lists dozens and dozens of supporters who understand what this is all about. We need to double that number and then continue to grow. The easy path can tempt. We are keenly aware that JCUA’s work is not, and never has been, easy. I am deeply grateful for your engagement and support. Mapping a Strategic Vision Judy Levey JCUA Executive Director Urban is a key piece of the identity of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs. In 2013, JCUA used a “momentum map” to plot 30 examples of our work across the urban area. It’s clear that Chicagoans cannot thrive when they face huge barriers to stability, rooted in discrimination and poverty. Among JCUA’s activities to the south were work in Blue Island to gather support for the campaign to protect the rights of affordable housing voucher holders, a teen partnership to develop leaders with Imagine Englewood If, and a Community Ventures zero-interest loan for the redevelopment of the Rosen- wald Building in Bronzeville. Just west of Chicago, we were in Broadview, home of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement immigrant detention center, where a remembrance was held (May 3, 2013) in honor of the hundreds of immigrant workers whose families were torn apart five years earlier in an immigration raid at Postville, Iowa, site of a kosher meatpacking plant. Up north, in Evanston, we facilitated a workshop on immigration reform and another on social identities and privilege. It was in Evanston where we inaugurated the first year-round program for 2 Or Tzedek, our teen social justice institute. Just as we plotted our work on a map, we mapped a strategic vision for the next five years which will allow JCUA to motivate and mobilize progressive Jews from across the urban area to work with us, hand-in-hand. The intentional building of our membership base will amplify and accelerate efforts to make Chicago a more just city. Thank you for your part and partnership in this critical work, inspired by the prophets of the bible and translated into action today and tomorrow, through your support. 2013 SNAPSHOTS Economic Justice Gun Violence Prevention Immigrant Justice Partnered with A Better Illinois to push for fair taxes and with the Restaurant Opportunities Center to demand fair wages for tipped restaurant workers. Advocated for common sense gun legislation, including banning guns in places of worship and initiatives with the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. Stood against tearing families apart and inhumane deportations with Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, and the Immigrant Justice Youth League. Or Tzedek Teen Social Justice Institute Jewish-Muslim Community Building Initiative Rebuilding Communities in Chicago Or Tzedek’s summer sessions and yearlong program motivated teens to be social justice leaders today. Iftar in the Synagogue drew hundreds of people to Anshe Emet in Lakeview to learn from each other through shared traditions. Rehabbing foreclosed homes in North Lawndale, Austin and Berwyn was the focus of a Community Ventures zerointerest loan. Community Development Building Bridges The Future Gracie’s Café received a zero-interest loan to launch an employment and training program for formerly incarcerated individuals. JCUA stood in solidarity with Fierce Women of Faith, to learn, pray, and advocate against community violence together. JCUA embarked on a five-year strategic plan to map organizational pivot towards base-building as a means to grow capacity for meaningful social change. 3 HIGHLIGHTS Gracie’s Cafe: Building Community One Cup at a Time JCUA’s Community Ventures Program provides zero-interest loans for community development projects. With a final push from a CVP economic development loan of $50,000, St. Leonard’s Ministries (SLM) was able to open the doors of Gracie’s Café, an extraordinary endeavor on Chicago’s New West Side, in September 2013. St. Leonard’s Ministry is an organization with almost 60 years’ of experience providing comprehensive residential, case management and employment development services for formerly incarcerated men and women. Each year, approximately 250275 formerly incarcerated individuals reside in SLM’s four housing programs: St. Leonard’s House, Grace House, St. Andrew’s Court and the Harvest Commons Residence. Harvest Commons opened late this summer in partnership with Heartland Alliance and is located in the former Viceroy Hotel. Gracie’s Café, brightly lit and eco-friendly, is located on the ground floor next to the Harvest Commons garden at 1519 W. Warren Blvd. Members of the JCUA Community Ventures advisory committee present a check to Walter Boyd, executive director of St. Leonard’s Ministries (far left) and Bob Dougherty, director of development, St. Leonard’s (next to Boyd). Representing JCUA are Roberta Nechin, Zachary Braun (back) and Ralph Brown (right). Gracie’s Café is staffed with graduates of SLM’s Culinary Skills program, which is run by its Employment Center. As graduates of the training program, Gracie’s Cafe staff members receive valuable work experience and have the opportunity to meet with a job counselor to help them further their careers. After training and working at Gracie’s Cafe, SLM’s goal is to move employees to stable, permanent jobs in communities and bring on new graduates to help them do the same. Grab a cup of coffee, a bite to eat or ask about their catering options. They are also a great venue for smaller meetings, gatherings and just a great atmosphere. Much more than a café, Gracie’s is definitely worth stopping by. Along with the great food and drink, customers can enjoy the warm feeling of knowing that they are supporting an exceptional training program that addresses root causes of injustice in Chicago. Left to right: Bob Dougherty (from SLM), Mike Ellert (cafe manager), LaTonya Carter (cafe staff) and Walter Boyd (SLM director). 4 HIGHLIGHTS Teen Program Expands to Full Year “light of justice” – partnered with Beth Emet Synagogue in Evanston to offer leadership training and the opportunity to work on youth-led social justice campaigns. Response to the new program was strong, with nearly 50 teens from around the Chicago area committing themselves to a “Year of Action,” as the program is aptly called. Or Tzedek: Year of Action explores community organizing from a Jewish perspective and how to be a powerful Jewish teen activist in Chicago. Workshops were scheduled for one Sunday each month between fall 2013 and spring 2014. The inaugural year began with a focus on a root cause analysis of social justice issues in Chicago and classic community organizing skills. At a three-day winter retreat, participants chose specific social justice issues to work on for the remainder of the year in partnership with directly impacted communities. JCUA’s nationally recognized teen social justice institute expanded from a summer session to a year-round program in 2013. Or Tzedek – named for a Hebrew phrase that means Acts of Change 2013 The 2013 edition of JCUA’s annual Acts of Change event drew a crowd of 350 to honor Sylvia Neil with the Rabbi Robert J. Marx Social Justice Award for her commitment to social justice and human rights. Rabbi Capers Funnye, event chair and vice president of the JCUA board, remembered Sylvia Neil’s steadfast support of his predominantly African-American synagogue years ago. “It was difficult to find leaders of the Jewish community who would support me and my congregation. Sylvia Neil stepped forward in support, delivering a powerful message of inclusion,” said Rabbi Funnye in his remarks. “At the time, it was a gutsy move on her part, a bold step,” he continued. “She spoke out. She took action.” Event co-chairs, from left: Lowell Sachnoff, Fay Clayton, Lewis and Susan Manilow, Sylvia Neil and Dan Fischel, Rabbi Capers Funnye. The gala evening was a celebration of Sylvia Neil’s life’s work, her career, her incredible family and friends and the important work of JCUA. “When I look out at this room, I see fellow travelers,” Neil said as she accepted the recognition. “Indeed, many of us have personally worked closely together litigating cases, writing legislation, establishing programs and supporting institutions that advance these issues and causes.” 5 WE THANK EACH AND EVERY DONOR WHO SUPPORTED JCUA IN 2013.
