Jesus recognized the significance of ordinary things such as bread, wine, water, oil, or a touch, a kind word, a shared meal. Throughout his life he used the elements of daily life, transforming them into something extraordinary because he was communicating his own life. These common elements have the power to save us through Jesus’ action in them. These elements nourish us, lead us to Christ, give us the grace to live better, strength to be reconciled with those who have hurt us or whom we have hurt, and peace to face pain and death. These are the seven sacraments. The sacraments of the church are external signs and symbols that express a deeper reality and work in us by giving grace, that is the life of God within us. The seven sacraments of the church correspond to all stages and important moments in the life of human beings and, therefore, in the life of Christians. They bring birth and growth, healing and mission to the life of Christians. They are divided into three groups: •Sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. •Sacraments of healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. •Sacraments of mission: Marriage and Holy Orders. All sacraments have some material element used in the rite, and a form that is the content of the nature of the sacrament. They have a grace that comes through the power of God to the person who administers the (continúa en la p. 2) (continues on p. 2) Something for every occasion Para la reflexión ✜ ¿Qué símbolos son los más importantes para mí? ✜¿Qué cosas me fortalecen espiritualmente? Saved by water Many immigrants have died trying to cross the Rio Grande or the ocean. Water could mean death. But lack of water also causes death. Many die in the desert. Baptism is a sacrament of death and new life. The word, which comes from Greek, means burial or immersion. Our sin is buried. We are given a new life in Christ. Baptism is the entrance into the family of God, the church, which is a community of those who believe in Jesus Christ. Many of us were baptized when we were children and perhaps we don’t remember anything. Our parents and godparents made a commitment to raise us with a Christian identity, in the same way that they made us aware of our family, culture, and country of origin. Each year at Easter the church asks all Christians to renew the baptismal promises that their parents and godparents made for them when they were babies. To be clothed in Christ means to immerse oneself in the tomb of water and emerge to a new life. This implies a commitment to the community and the world. That is, each baptized person must become a “sacrament”—a sign and action of God in this world. The oil of the strong In the old times, athletes and warriors anointed themselves with oil before a game or a fight. Kings and prophets El óleo de los fuertes were also anointed for their mission, which would be difficult at times. In Confirmation we acknowledge that every baptized person shares in the identiy of Christ as king, prophet, and priest. Jesus is the Anointed of God and we all share in that identity. Confirmation means reaffirming that faith and identity and being sent to fulfill the mission of Christ in the world. La Confirmación significa reconocer nuestra fe y nuestra To be clothed in Christ identidad y ser enviados implies a commitment to a cumplir la misión de Cristo en el mundo. bread Bread is the symbol of sharing within the family. —Carmen Aguinaco Walking toward life No one would intentionally leave home for a long journey without taking everything needed. The anointing of the sick places everything in order that must be completed and healed, and provides the person with the strength she or he needs for the journey (whether it is the final journey toward heaven, or the process of a long illness). Oil is used as a symbol of anointing and strength. And they will be one The sacrament of marriage, initiated at the wedding, is a journey to be completed throughout the lives of the couple. The Christian community is called to celebrate the love of God and the commitment to the incarnate God to the couple who is getting married. It is a process of discovering the presence and the love of God in the spouse. It is the mystery of finding joy even in the midst of pain, of abandoning one’s own selfishness to find the other person fully, to yield some of our own opinions in order to find understanding, to give love to others so that we can later find love. Those who serve There is a leadership in every organization. Someone has to take the initiative and lead others so that they are not all lost along the way. Bishops, priests, and deacons—that is, all those who receive the sacrament of Holy Orders, have accepted the task to proclaim the gospel, to teach the faithful, and to care for those who are less fortunate. The mystery of the church is Christ, the head, and Christians, the body. It is a mystery of unity through diversity without division. It is the mystery of a leadership that is based on serving and not being served. —Carmen Aguinaco Editor Father John Molyneux, C.M.F. Senior Editor Carmen F.
