Are you a Caregiver for a Spouse, Sibling, Child, Grandchild,
Friend or Pet? It’s rewarding to be there for the ones you love
when they need you. It can also be stressful, exhausting
and a full-time job. But you’re not alone!!
Adult Services hosts a Caregiver Empowerment Group every
month on the 2nd Wednesday at 3:00 pm. The group meets at
Hudson Guild’s Elliott Center, 441 W 26 Street. Please join others
experiencing the same issues at the next meeting on July 8th.
The West Side Senior Supported Agriculture Program is Back!!

Membership is FREE & Required to Participate in All Trips & Activities.
You must have an updated, current membership ID card and barcoded key tag. Please see Fulton Reception or the NORC Office if you need a replacement card or have not yet received a key tag.
NSC Registration Hours: Monday & Friday 10:30 am-12:00 pm, Tuesday & Wednesday 1:00-2:30 pm.
Pick up a form from Fulton Reception, complete it with one of our staff during registration hours and have
your photo taken for your membership card. (Your card will be available at Fulton Reception about 2
weeks later.)
NSC Re-Registration: Daily 9:00-11:15 am & 1:30-4:30 pm. Pick up a form at Fulton Reception. Fill it
out at your convenience. Return it and get your updated card (& key tag, if you don’t have one) on the spot.

It’s almost July 4th, and that means it’s party time again at the NORC!
Come celebrate the spirit of summer at our
SUMMER HOLIDAY CONCERT & CELEBRATION!
Special guest Emilie Surtees will be performing all of your favorite R&B
and Motown hits on Monday, July 6th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. All are
welcome - we hope to see you there!
We’re also very excited to announce a new weekly activity that will be offered on
Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 pm - SALSA DANCING! This fun class will keep your
body, mind and spirit in tip top condition and will be taught in Spanish and
English.
Finally, on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm (following Chinese Club), we will be
hosting a new activity (TBD) that will be taught in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Stay tuned—you won’t want to miss it!

Participant Spotlight: Sal Mendez
Sal Mendez was born and grew up in Chelsea. He is the oldest male sibling of 4 brothers and
4 sisters. Sal’s mother emigrated from Puerto Rico before he was born. Sal went to school in St. Columbus, and left the neighborhood at age 15. He later went to nursing school at Wilkesbarre Veteran’s Hospital. Upon returning to New York, he went to Bronx Community College for 2 years, then
to Lehman College, where he got his B.A. Sal then started working as a nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital
and continued at Bellevue Hospital.
Sal was introduced to Hudson Guild by his mother 18 years ago. He started by helping his
mother get to the center and return home. With time, he developed an attachment to the Adult Services participants and began volunteering. Sal’s mother was a volunteer in the Hudson Guild kitchen, preparing silverware
for over 15 years, and was a founder and a very active supporter of Chelsea Coalition on Housing.
When his mother died, Sal promised both his mother and himself to take care of his mother’s friends “until they
meet her in heaven one day.” Because they were the ones who helped him and his mother materially and emotionally, he
feels indebted to them for being able to lead a successful life thanks to their contributions and sacrifices. In fact, Sal describes his lifestyle in the quotes “you get back as much as you put in” and “don’t let the past bring you down, just focus
on the future and be happy.”
Sal Méndez nació y creció en el Chelsea. Él es el hermano varón mayor de 4 hermanos y 4 hermanas. La madre de
Sal emigró de Puerto Rico antes de nacimiento de Sal. Él fue a la escuela en St. Columbus, y salió del barrio a los 15 años.
