A Message from the President of Your Senior Advisory Council, Dorothy Durlach
Un Mensaje del Presidente de Su Consejo Asesorador Principal, Dorothy Durlach
February is the time for Love and Patriotism. Valentines will be on the way and chocolate covered cherries
even if George Washington did cut down the cherry tree . He made us have a presidency. Presidents’ Day
reminds us of public service and the Declaration of Human Rights and our Constitution, the birth of our
democracy, and rights won. Lincoln freed the slaves and preserved the Union. The Asian Lunar New Year is
coming up on the 19th with delicious foods and celebrations. Dragon parades, dancing, music and crafts at
the various libraries and around our city. Join a committee, put a suggestion in the box about your senior
issues or interests. Visit our great garden and help out there if you can. Take a class, learn a new skill. Like
jewelry, hat making, quilting, or crochet. Exercise if you can, Zumba, chair aerobics, yoga, tai chi . Check with
your doctor to be safe. Have a good time, be cautious, drink enough water, dress warmly, and use the services
at our center to better your life and for all of us. Keep an eye on the city council thereby joining in the efforts
for a better life. And thanks to all those who have already and those who keep our center working as well as it
does. Thank You !
¡Gracias!

FEBUARY/FEBRERO 2015 SUNDIAL
Class and Group News (See Page 12 for Complete Weekly Schedule)
NEW WORKSHOP! : Japanese Classical Dance (Limited Space, Register at Reception)
Sessions: Every Friday, February 20th to June 26th (10:00 am-12:00 pm in the Auditorium)
Concert: Friday, June 26, 2015
In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of Japanese classical dance, repertories from
19th century Kabuki dance, and folk dances. The Japanese classical dance, which westerners often call as "fan
dance," will be introduced and participants will have a chance to perform as part of this project. In addition, the
audience, on the day of the concert, is invited to dance a selection of folk dance, Bon Odori, which is the repetition of
simple steps and movements as a fun way to try and get them on their feet with Japanese music.
After learning how to dress in a kimono and how to tie an obi (the traditional sash worn), and as part of the
experience, participants will wear it and use a dance fan during their practice.
Seniors who have been interested in Japanese performing arts throughout their lifetime must have been
intrigued by the grace and beauty of Japanese classical dance at one point. With this workshop, they now can finally
try! “One of the reasons why I want seniors to experience Japanese classical dance is because it is known for the
sustained energy and control, which is very suited to seniors rather than their youthful counterparts. Moreover,
the subtlety, depth of poetry in the lyrics and expressions discussed during the workshop will be much more
appreciated by seniors.”

IT’S WINTER: DRESS SMARTLY
Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health problems. Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and
hypothermia by keeping warm.
• Wear a hat, hood or scarf, as most heat is lost through the head.
• Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and warmth.
• Keep fingertips, earlobes and noses covered if you go outside.
• Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.

Pa r t i c i p a n t S p o t li g h t - D a r l e n e Wa t e r s
It is very rare for someone to refer to Hudson Guild as a “home,” but Darlene Waters proudly does. She was
born in Manhattan, New York, went to PS33, and eventually attended a 1-year Teacher College to get her
CDA. Darlene was a part of Hudson Guild since age 11 because she was raised in the Elliott Houses.
Darlene’s mother saw an advertisement for a youth program, and got her involved with her brother in the
Hudson Guild’s teen program. Her brother eventually joined the Marine Corps. As a teenager, Darlene got
her first job through Hudson Guild at Patro Sellers, a clothing factory for men.
Darlene raised her two sons in the Guild, both of whom got their jobs here. Her older son worked
for New York Housing Authority at the Elliott Chelsea, and the younger son worked for St. Vincent’s Hospital as a health care professional. Darlene is currently raising her grandson Justin through Hudson Guild. Justin
attended the Children’s center and many youth programs. He got his first teenage job at the Guild, went to
theatre with Jim Furlong, and now works in the I.T. for the Guild.
Darlene worked at Hudson Guild Children’s Center for 41 years, and was also a President of the parents group. After retirement,
she began participating in the NORC program, where she learns how to best spend her retirement time. Darlene is a member of the Advisory Program, NORC Committee, is on the Board of Trustees, serves as President of the NAC Committee; and after 3 years of volunteering, became a vice-President of the Elliott Chelsea Tenants Organization. Darlene organizes and hosts yearly reunions for the people
who grew up in the neighborhood. She supported Corey Johnson when he was in the Community Board, and helped him in his campaign.
Darlene is proud recipient of Senior Citizen Award for all the services she contributed for Hudson Guild. Darlene is very proud of
the multicultural and multilingual population in the area. One of her biggest wishes is that more adults and families should join Hudson
Guild. When asked to describe philosophy of life, Darlene said “just because you can’t speak the same language, doesn’t mean you can’t
communicate and reach out to help.”
