I hope this newsletter finds you safe after the snowfall. I have been advocating for safer streets & sidewalks.
Councilmember Corey Johnson’s office has sent emails to neighborhood businesses informing them of the law
regarding sidewalk snow removal . He has also asked corner businesses to include crosswalks in their shoveling so
that wheelchairs & walkers can cross more easily. I know this is not enough with the flooding & large puddles. I
encourage you to call 311 whenever you see a problem to let the City know where it is, i.e. Ninth Avenue at the
southwest corner of 18th Street. The City will give you a complaint number. We can make a difference. If you get
no results, then let me know with the details of the problem & when you called and I will contact an elected
official. Together we can make Chelsea safer.
Movies at HG are great in this cold weather and are shown every Monday, Tuesday & Friday at 1:30 on the dot.

Tuesdays, 2:00-3:30 pm: Enjoy Poetry with David Friedman every week at Hudson Guild. “We will read and write
wonderful poems, work as a group and may also meet one-to-one.” David has won prizes for his poetry and has had
two books of poems published. He has studied at Cornell and Columbia Universities. He believes that the best way
to learn to write poems is to read good ones.
Wednesdays 1:30-3:30: Game Quest Across China with Julia and Alice is to gather not only the Chinese community together, but to also expand to everyone who is interested in exploring the Chinese culture by learning
through cultural games. We hope to make it a fun and eventful experience!
Wednesdays 10:30-11:45 & 11:45-1:00: Intermediate and Beginner’s Spanish with Oscar is on hiatus and will be resuming
on March 2nd.
Thursdays 10:00-11:30: Interested in learning more about the computer but in a creative way? Then Technology &
Art with Gabby is just for you! You’ll have the opportunity to learn basic computer functions by creating their own
personalized art work. No computer or art skill is necessary; all you need is to be yourself. Hope to see you there!
Thursdays 1:00-4:00: Have you always wanted to learn to play Bridge? Then you’re in luck! A new Beginner’s
Bridge with Myra begins on February 18th; sign up at Fulton Reception.
Fridays 10:00 am-12:00 pm: Collage with Cici - Collage is a form of art that involves manipulating and assembling
various images into a larger whole. Join Cici as this class resumes to create your own image art.
Fridays, 1:30-2:30 pm: Introductory Mandarin with Alice: Learn how to write, read and speak basic Mandarin
Chinese starting February 5th in Guild Gallery II.

Membership is FREE & Required to Participate in All Trips & Activities.
You must have an updated, current membership ID card and barcoded key tag. Please see Fulton
Reception or the NORC Office if you need a replacement card or have not yet received a key tag.
NSC Registration Hours: Monday-Friday 10:00 am-11:30 am, Monday-Wednesday & Friday 1:30-3:00 pm.
Pick up a form from Fulton Reception and complete it with one of our staff during registration hours.
Once registered, you’ll receive your temporary membership card & barcoded keytag; your laminated
membership card will be available at Fulton Reception about 2 weeks later.
NSC Re-Registration: Daily 9:00-11:15 am & 1:30-4:30 pm. Pick up a form at Fulton Reception. Fill it out at your
convenience. Return it and get your updated card (& key tag, if you don’t have one) on the spot.

NORC HEALTH INDICATORS SURVEY RAFFLE: We are currently collecting Health Indicator Surveys, which
will allow us to see how we can better serve you. If you take a survey, you will be entered in the NORC raffle. There will
be three chances to win. The winners will be announced at an event in March. Please speak to a NORC staff member
if you have not completed a Health Indicator Survey. Remember, you can only win if you enter!
Additional Nursing Hours: Beginning Mid February, NORC will be providing additional Nursing Services with a Cantonese/English speaking nurse. An announcement will be made in February with the confirmed date. Please also note
the change in the hours for Maria, our bilingual Spanish/English nurse.
Chinese New Year’s Celebration —- Let’s celebrate the Chinese New Year together! Join us as we celebrate the Year of the Monkey in the Dan Carpenter Community Room, 2nd floor on Thursday, February
11th from 11:30pm to 1:30pm. There will be great performances and a few surprises!
Black History Month Celebration —- Join NORC for its second annual Black History Month celebration. There
will be food, entertainment and much more. The event will be held in the Dan Carpenter Community Room, 2nd
floor on Thursday, February 25th from 11-1pm.
Saturday Game Night —- This is the community event that you should not miss! Please join us on Saturday, February 6th from 4pm-10pm for a night of Bingo, Pokeno, dominoes and much more. Please bring a dish to share! Game
Night is held the 1st Saturday monthly on the 1st floor in the Gural Room.

Giselle Regalado is a full-time bilingual Social Worker at the NORC who has been with Hudson Guild
for a year. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Gender Studies and Cultural Anthropology from Saint
Michael’s College and her Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Smith College. Her favorite
things to do are to watch television, go on long walks and try different cuisines, but Giselle loves to
travel more than anything. One interesting fact: Giselle has a twin sister.
Giselle Regalado trabaja tiempo completo como una trabajadora social bilingue en el NORC. Ella ha
estado trabajando en el Hudson Guild por un año. Ella obtuvo su licenciatura en Estudios del Género y
Antropología Cultural en Saint Michael’s College y su Maestría en Trabajo Social Clinico en Smith
College. Sus actividades favoritas son ver la televisión, caminar, y probar diferentes comidas, pero mas

IT’S TAX SEASON - It’s that time of year again and we have AARP-trained volunteers and Community
Tax Aids ready to assist you in preparing and filing your income taxes. Just sign up at Fulton Reception.
Volunteers will be available by appointment each Thursday afternoon and evening starting February 4 (2/18
for Community Tax Aids’ evening appointments) until April 14 only. Don’t miss out!

IT’S WINTER: DRESS SMARTLY
Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health problems. Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia by keeping warm.
 Wear a hat, hood or scarf; most heat is lost through the head.
 Wear layers; they provide better insulation and warmth.
 Keep your fingertips, earlobes and nose covered if you go outside.
 Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.

Richard Heisler was born on the Lower East Side in Manhattan during
WW II. After living in Manhattan for 12-1/2 years, he and his parents moved to
the suburbs, where he lived as a teen. As an adult, Richard moved back to the
city. He has lived in a variety of places over the years, including California and
four jungles (not including Manhattan, the “asphalt jungle”), and has visited
many exotic places as a world traveler. Richard attended Hunter & Columbia and
studied & taught yoga, as well as Thai/Shiatsu live body work, very seriously. He
had a radio show during his time in California. Richard has written and continues
to write plays and does performance art work. A lot of his work has satirical
themes with political messages. Richard believes that his “mind has improved
throughout the years through reading, seeing movies and experiencing a lot of
travel.” He also believes that “one learns about themselves through their relationships with other people.” Richard has been a member of Hudson Guild for
about 12 years. He loves to eat at Hudson Guild and enjoys attending classes.
