Looking to Our Lady as a
Model for Life
Whenever I pray
the Joyful
Mysteries of the
rosary I am aware,
not only of the
sacred moments
which made up the
life of Our Lord,
but also of my own ‘joyful mysteries’ with my
three daughters. When I meditate upon the
Annunciation, I think about being in the doctor’s
office hearing, yes, I was indeed pregnant! I felt
such joy and gratitude that my husband, Robert,
and I would soon be entrusted with new life.
Meditating upon Mary’s Visitation to her cousin
Elizabeth, I recall my excitement in bringing the
good news of my pregnancy to my sister, Joann.
The Nativity of Our Lord brings to mind the first
moment I held each of my daughters in the
hospital - sheer joy and thanksgiving welled up
in my heart and how I could not stop smiling!
Reflecting upon the Presentation of Jesus in the
Temple, I think about the moment we brought
our girls to be baptized—realizing, in my heart
and soul, that was the day on which they were
really born, as children of God; I still get chills
remembering the words of the priest, “I claim
this child for Christ.” Life is a gift and it is
beautiful. The life of our three daughters has
brought me great joy. I am grateful to have Our
Lady as a model of what it means to cherish this
gift of life.

Pope’s Corner
“The Church is above all to be a credible
witness to mercy, professing it and living it
as the core of the revelation of Jesus Christ.
From the heart of the Trinity, from the
depths of the mystery of God, the great
river of mercy wells up and overflows
unceasingly. It is a spring that will never
run dry, no matter how many people draw
from it. ”
–Pope Francis, (MV, 25)
For your reflection:
Mercy is compared to a river—how does God quench
our thirst through granting mercy?

Words from Pope Francis….
“From each tiny child waiting to be born, to individuals nearing death, all are
precious and deserve our care and protection. Women and men suffering after
abortion, individuals tempted to end their lives, couples longing to conceive a
child, people pushed to the margins of society by a "throwaway culture,"
expectant mothers facing challenging pregnancies, and every other person—each
"has a place in God's heart from all eternity" (Amoris Laetitia. . . , 168).

Jesus makes Himself present, not only in a far off place like Rome, but at every
Catholic Church in the world. He waits, He longs, He remains. Jesus is faithful to
His promises. There is great comfort in knowing that wherever we might be, we
know exactly where God is: the tabernacle. Jesus is always waiting for us to draw
near Him—He even, in a sense, makes Himself a ‘prisoner’ for love of us. May we
draw near every day to receive grace, healing, and peace.

Do you know someone that needs help?
Did you know that Hunterdon County Heroin overdoses
reported in 2015 rose 333% compared to 2014!
Remember what the lepers said in the gospel reading? “Jesus,
Master.” They recognized Jesus Christ as their Master, the one who
can relieve them of their suffering. My prayer and works with
people who are addicted is the hope that they can turn away from
the current ‘master’ in their lives, addiction, and turn towards the
real ‘Master’ in life, Jesus Christ.
If you know of someone who struggles with addiction please know
that St Magdalen’s is a place where the ‘door is open wide’ so they
can be consoled with the Love of God. Call us so we can walk with
them or you.

loss. If you are in need of healing after losing a loved one through death
and are grieving this loss, you might consider being part of this spiritual
based program. The program consists of 8 weekly sessions offering
information about the grief process, and gives an opportunity for people to
share their thoughts and feelings in an environment of confidentiality,
understanding and empathy. The support group is open to all people who
are grieving the death of a loved one.

Memorial: Saint Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr (+ 107). St. Ignatius was
appointed Bishop of Antioch by St. Peter himself. He suffered martyrdom in Rome
under persecution of Trajan. On his way to Rome, he wrote a number of letters,
which are some of the earliest and richest Christian writings pertaining to marriage,
the Eucharist, and the Incarnation. His name is mentioned in the Roman Canon.
October 18
Feast: Saint Luke, evangelist. A physician from Antioch, he converted to Christianity and accompanied Paul on two of his journeys. The author of both the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, Luke devotes attention to Christ’s birth and childhood as well as to the universality of the Redemption.
October 19
Memorial: Saints John de Brebeuf and Isaac Jogues, priests and martyrs, and their
companions, martyrs (17th century). These were eight Jesuits missionaries who
were sent from France to North America. Both John and Isaac were martyred after
converting many thousands of Native Americans. Throughout their ordeals, they
and their companions exhibited undying fortitude and charity in the face of imprisonment and torture, sacrificing their own lives for the sake of the Gospel.
First Reading: Exodus 17:8-13
Amalek and his people attacked the Israelites, so Moses instructed Joshua to lead some of the Israelites into battle the next day. While Moses kept his hands
raised in prayer, the Israelites were winning. But when he put his hands down, they would begin to lose. So two others helped him keep his hands raised, and
Joshua and the Israelites won the battle.
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3:14—4:2
Paul tells Timothy that the Scriptures are inspired by God and are an excellent tool in teaching others about God's expectations of his people. Knowledge of
the Scriptures, coupled with faith in Jesus, will lead many people to salvation. Paul urges Timothy to continue preaching the gospel, although this will sometimes be a difficult task.
Gospel: Luke 18:1-8
Jesus speaks about a corrupt judge who lacked respect for either God or man. A widow repeatedly asked him to settle a case in her favor. He finally settled the
case, only because he grew weary of listening to her requests. Jesus points out that if even this corrupt judge eventually listened, then God, who is just, will
certainly answer the pleas of his people.

Primera Lectura: Exodo 17:8-13
Evangelio: San Lucas 18:1-8
