LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
In all of St Paul's writings, few passages are as famous as the
one we listened to today. Paul is making a distinction between
works and faith. He says that salvation comes from "faith in
Christ". That's what brings us into a right relationship with God.
This view of salvation was quite different than the view held by
the Jews at the time. They thought that salvation came through
what Paul calls "the works of the law." They thought that by
perfectly following the law (the Ten Commandments plus the
thousands of specifications and rituals derived from them), you
could get back into a right relationship with God. That was the
mainstream view, and St Paul was preaching against it.
The Christians in Galatia had received Paul's message, but when
he moved on, some Jewish Christians started going back to the
old ways. When Paul heard about that, he wrote this letter, in
which he crushes definitively the old, law-centered view of
salvation. He writes, "We know that a person is not justified by
works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ." We need this
reminder as much as the Christians in Galatia did. We are still
vulnerable to the age-old temptation that trapped Adam and Eve:
the temptation of trying to achieve happiness through our own
efforts alone.
We are easily deceived into thinking that by arranging our lives
with just the right combination of religion, popularity, money, and
prestige, we will create our own heaven on earth. But that's a lie.
As St Paul says, "If justification comes through the law" (in other
words, if happiness and peace can come through our own efforts)
"then Christ died for nothing." Happiness and fruitfulness lie in
Christ alone, in union and friendship with him. That's why he
came.
I recently read a simple analogy for this. A group of alumni, highly
established in their careers, got together to visit their old
university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints
about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the
professor went to the kitchen. He returned with a large pot of
coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass,
crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite. He
put the cups and the coffee pot on the coffee table and told
everyone to help themselves. When all the students had a cup of
coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nicelooking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain
and cheap ones. "Why is that? The cup itself adds no quality to
the coffee. "What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup,
but you consciously went for the best cups... "And then you
began eying each other's cups. "Do you think this can tell you
something about your problems and stress?"
It's a simple story. I don't even know if it really happened. But it's
down to earth, and it illustrates St Paul's point. With our own
efforts in life, all we can do is make cups. Jobs, money, prestige,
popularity, appearances - these are just the cup, just the outside,
just the container of life. But no mere cup, even the most beautiful
and flashy, can satisfy our thirst. What really matters, what
matters more than anything, is that our cups be filled with the right
drink: with Christ. The coffee cup is meaningless without the
coffee. Just so, all our efforts and achievements in life are
meaningless unless they are filled by friendship with Christ.

Queridos Parroquianos,
En todos los escritos de San Pablo, algunos pasajes son tan
famosos como Lo escuchamos hoy. Pablo está haciendo una
distinción entre obras y la fe. Dice que la salvación viene de la "fe
en Cristo". Eso es lo que nos lleva a una relación correcta con
Dios. Este punto de vista de la salvación era bastante diferente
de la celebrada por los judíos en ese tiempo. Pensaban que la
salvación llegaba a través de lo que Pablo llama «las obras de la
ley». Pensaron que siguiendo perfectamente la ley (los diez
mandamientos y los miles de especificaciones y rituales que
derivan de ellos), podrían volver a una relación correcta con
Dios. Eso era nadar contra la corriente, y San Pablo estaba
predicando contra la corriente. Los cristianos de Gálatas habían
recibido el mensaje de Pablo, pero cuando pasó algún tiempo,
algunos judíos cristianos se remontaron a las viejas costumbres.
Cuando Pablo se enteró, él escribió esta carta, en la que él
aplasta definitivamente la visión antigua, centrado en la ley de la
salvación. Escribe: "Sabemos que una persona no es justificada
por las obras de la ley, sino por la fe en Cristo Jesús".
Necesitamos este recordatorio tanto como los cristianos en
Gálatas lo necesitan. Aún somos vulnerables a la tentación
milenaria que atrapo a Adán y Eva: la tentación de tratar de
alcanzar la felicidad a través de nuestros propios esfuerzos por sí
solos.

Somos fácilmente engañados con el pensamiento de que
arreglando nuestras vidas con la correcta combinación de
religión, popularidad, dinero y prestigio, creamos nuestro propio
cielo en la tierra. Pero eso es una mentira. Como San Pablo dice,
"si la justificación viene a través de la ley" (en otras palabras, si la
felicidad y la paz pueden venir a través de nuestros propios
esfuerzos)

murió
en
vano.
"La
felicidad y fecundidad se encuentran en Cristo solamente, en
Unión y amistad con él. Es por eso que
vino.
Recientemente he leído una analogía simple para esto. Un grupo
de alumnos, altamente establecidos en sus carreras, se
reunieron para visitar a su viejo profesor de Universidad. Pronto,
la conversación se convirtió en quejas sobre el estrés en el
trabajo y la vida. Ofreciendo café a sus huéspedes, el profesor
fue a la cocina. Volvió con una gran jarra de café y una variedad
de tazas - porcelana, plástico, vidrio y cristal, algunas caras,
algunas exquisitas. Puso las tazas y la cafetera sobre la mesa y
dijo a todo mundo que se sirvieran por si mismos. Cuando todos
los estudiantes tenían una taza de café en la mano, el profesor
dijo: "Si ustedes han notado, toda taza de aspecto agradable, y
caro la tomaron primero, dejando atrás las más sencillas y
baratas." ¿Por qué? La taza no agrega ninguna calidad al café.
"Lo que todos ustedes realmente querían era café, no la taza,
pero conscientemente fueron por las mejores tazas... "Y
empezaron a escudriñar las tazas de los demás." ¿Creen que
esto puede decir algo acerca de sus problemas y el estrés?"
Es una historia sencilla. Ni siquiera sé si realmente sucedió. Pero
aquí en la tierra, ilustra el punto de San Pablo. Con nuestros propios
esfuerzos en la vida, todo lo que podemos hacer es hacer tazas.
Puestos de trabajo, dinero, prestigio, popularidad, apariencias - son
simplemente las tazas, sólo el exterior, sólo el recipiente de la vida.
Pero no la mera taza, incluso la más hermosa y llamativa, puede
satisfacer nuestra sed. Lo que realmente importa, lo que importa más
que nada, es que nuestras tazas se llenen con la bebida correcta:
con Cristo. La taza de café no tiene sentido sin el café. Así, todos
nuestros esfuerzos y logros en la vida no tienen sentido a menos que
están llenos de amistad con Cristo.

recibir, contribuir que consumir.

El Evangelio de hoy nos llama a considerar como
podemos servir a Dios. ¿Consumimos como los Fariseos
que simplemente se reclinaban en su mesa esperando ser
servidos? O, ¿contribuimos como la mujer que se
arrodilló ante Jesús y le lavó Sus pies? Cada día
debemos escoger. ¿Tomar o dar? ¿Consumir o
contribuir? ¿Ser servidos o servir?
PROGRAMA DE VERANO - INSTITUTO FE Y VIDA - Sábado, 26 de
Junio al Sábado, 2 de Julio El Instituto Fe y Vida ofrece este verano
cinco oportunidades de formación intensiva para la Pastoral Juvenil
Hispana, la catequesis y el ministerio hispano. Todos los programas
están diseñados para jóvenes mayores de 18 años, personal diocesano y
parroquial, líderes juveniles y asesores en la pastoral juvenil hispana,
coordinadores de pastoral con adolescentes, sacerdotes, ministros
eclesiales, formadores y servidores en comunidades, grupos y
movimientos juveniles. Nuestra oficina estará otorgando becas, que
cubrirán un porcentaje de los gastos de inscripción, Hospedaje, comida
y vuelo. La beca no es por el monto total del curso. Entre más pronto
entreguen su aplicación sale más económico. El último día para enviar
su aplicación de beca será el 13 de junio, 2016 – Mirna Ochoa
