The human family is incomplete without a father who submits to his vocation of love. The role of being a father is quite unlike that of a mother. They are not meant to be the same. Motherhood has many biological influences whereas fatherhood essentially has no biological influence, but rather is almost purely acquired through sociological instruction. That means that boys must somehow learn from their community what the role of father means and what its obligations are. But once a society allows its boys to abandon this role, the results can only be tragic. There is simply no other overwhelming common denominator of modern societal tragedy than homes where the father is absent. This includes: families living below the poverty line, teen suicide, teen drug and alcohol abuse, children who suffer sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, teen crime, teen runaways, high school dropout rates, the adult prison population, you name it – the statistics are staggering. In each of these above-listed topics, the percentages are in the 60-90 percentile! They all point to one common theme: When a father is absent in the home, children are put at risk. Obviously, this does not mean that in all cases such problems will occur if a father is absent, or that when a father is present these things will not happen, but these statistics force us to examine where our society is heading if we continue to allow men to “exist stage left” so-to-speak. First, we have to teach our young women that boys rarely consider sex to be an act of love, a sign of permanency, or a statement of sacrifice. Real men do. Boys of all ages don’t. Therefore, to begin a family without a mature self-sacrificing father is the first step away from raising children in safety and with the knowledge that both their parents are dedicated to their happy upbringing. Young girls need a father who can teach them how boys should treat them. Girls should also be made aware that boys do not take much risk in pre-marital sex. They can always just fade away. But a pregnant girl cannot ignore her child – even if she thinks abortion is the way out, because such an act will only haunt her in her future. No, unwed girls are always left with the responsibility of pregnancy. Boys . . . maybe, maybe not. So the very first step toward changing our fatherless society has to do with our failure to accept the consequences of pre-marital sex and the over-sexualization of our culture, especially of our young daughters! This must be matched by a firm desire to teach young people that sex belongs in marriage. There is no such thing as “safe sex” especially for girls whose emotional hearts are dragged through the pain of broken relationships. The second step is a re-teaching and appreciation of the institution and sacrament marriage.
